Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

I can already sense the same judgey people on here, oh how you have no idea we all reap what we sow in life. Carry on being judgemental and see what happens. It may not happen now, but it will come when you least expect it. We have got to do better.

If its an issue as i say, no harm in telling them in calm respectful manner, if they end up being aggressive, thank you, hug you, you’ll get your answer instead of just assuming/mocking.
if you cant, move on with your life as its not ww3.
We should all hopefully be kind when its visible, so choosing not to be is not honesty, its lack of empathy.

Nope, I will continue to use public transport and judge as it's the only release I have.
The soap dodgers on here are outing themselves.

Not everyone with an odour is ‘avoiding soap’ though, that assumption is part of the issue.

And not everyone has MH issues.
Enough already with blaming that for everything. That assumption is part of the problem.

KatieGeeGee · 01/06/2026 10:26

It can be hormonal for men & women. My advice if you suffer is Actimel yoghurt drinks or Bioglan gut bacteria. Ginger can also help, but the hormonal thing is suffered terribly by some people. Do not be too quick to judge

Becuriousnotjudgemental1980 · 01/06/2026 11:03

what I don’t get is stinky teens whose parents aren’t stinky. If you can look after yourself then you can make sure your poor teen doesn’t stink. DS has a couple of mates who just reek. Why aren’t their parents making sure they wash, use deo, have clean clothes!

I’m not blaming MH for everything, I’m saying people shouldn’t jump to conclusions without understanding the situation.

get out your knitting ladies? you wouldn't look out of place sitting knitting infront of the gallows

JaneFondue · 01/06/2026 11:30

My god, the hyperbole.
Expecting people to be clean on public transport is now the same as being a tricoteuse. I think you meant the guillotine @PollyPage21 😂

Are the smelly ones being kind to everyone else?

That’s exactly my point, you’re filling in the gaps with assumptions instead of actually knowing 💛

I don’t give a shit. I just expect people not to stink on public transport. I’ve never pretended to be kind, I’m not interested in the potential mental health or other problems of strangers.

cravingicedwater · 25/05/2026 11:53

It’s actually vile. Shower in the evening before bed, stick a load of deodorant on and make sure you’re in light sheets and light pyjamas. That’s all it takes

Surely, it's better to shower in the morning before you start your day? Might time showers leaves you 8 hours in perspire in bed; by the morning, it's half way to smelly again.

I just expect people not to stink on public transport

exactly and for those banging on about “be kind” it’s not great or kind for everyone else’s mental health being stuck in a bus that stinks.

I take medication that can make me feel nauseous at the best of times, the last thing I need is to smell a stench when I’m trying to go from a to b.

Quit blaming it on MH and medical conditions, if that was the case why would the UK public transport be so much more stinkier than say the buses I’ve been on in various developing nations? You do realise they suffer mental and physical illnesses there too. And they are way warmer climates and yet it’s rare to encounter smelly people on public transport over there.

In a hot country it's pretty much essential to shower twice a day. The discussion is UK based, so for most one shower a day is sufficient. The time of day that you decide to take a shower does vary from person to person depending on what you have been doing during the day. However, there is no stepping away from the fact that even someone who thinks they don't sweat, will lose up to half a pint of sweat a night. The key is to regularly wash your bedding and have a shower in the morning to remove the bacterias that cause BO. I can tell if someone has washed at night or they are freshly washed in the morning - you can smell it and see it, especially on men. https://www.bbc.co.uk/future/article/20250919-is-it-better-to-shower-in-the-morning-or-at-night Here is one article but there are many many others supporting this.

You would have really hard time in many places in Europe where lots, more than half, even bigger majority sometimes, of us shower at night then.

It’s easy not to care about strangers, most people only understand it when it affects someone they know.

I’ve lived in multiple European countries and noticed on public transport that a lot of people stink

I was on the underground other day. First time in over a decade. Literally everyone in 2 carriages were beginning to gag. Loads sat next to this one guy then rapidly moved after reaching. We soon realised it was one guy. The guy had the entire carriage to himself it end. On one of platforms, a man went to board train on said carriage with vile smelling man, he stepped back off shouting omg no no I can't and everyone just burst out laughing. Both the funniest thing I seen in a long time whilst equally disgusting. Neddless to say, I will stick to driving in future🤣🤑

I remember travelling on a train from an airport in Paris to the centre and it reeked...(much more than any UK train I'd ever been in).....of garlic!

The dirty sods are the ones who don’t shower daily and shower in the morning only, meaning they think it’s acceptable and hygiene to work a full day, sweating and smelling, sitting on work toilets or public toilets and then go to bed in pjs and in their sheets and fester all night.

absolutely fucking rotten.

oh and then not change their sheets and pajamas daily and put the same now dirty pjs on for the next few nights!

grim in an understatement.

You carry on being judgemental and ignorant. Crack on.

I was sitting on a bus a couple of weeks ago and it was cold weather and had been for some time. Two ladies ahead of me absolutely stank. It wasn't fresh sweat it was old (maybe months ago sweat). They looked absolutely lovely with beautiful makeup on, and had been to a medieval fair (dressed the part). Their clothes were grubby looking as well.

I had to put a tissue over my nose. On leaving the bus I did say something.

Maybe they re-enacting medieval washing habits as part of their event.
