Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Hello there,
Thank you for your post.
I wonder about your 9am journey and, who is travelling most of the time as most people start work at 9am.
I just imagine the type and, the category; I simply imagine, older people ( but not bus pass holders everywhere if retired, as it is 9:30 am generally for them to board ), young mothers / fathers coming back from dropping off children to school and, the mentally ill / disabled. They have a disabled pass which may allow them to board, before 9:30 am depending on the borough council again.
Some of these groups, have particular hygiene issues as you know, for their “ group “ ; it is quite concerning, but it is understandable ? Each have their own ‘ challenge ‘ leaving home early and may not have had a shower or, Deodorant is failing, spectacularly! 🤔

I used to line manage someone like this and I had to speak to her as it was revolting 🤢

Was she aware she smelt?

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 31/05/2026 13:38

I’m wondering: do the first thing in the morning people who smell, are they aware they smell? Like if I’m in a smelly environment and pick up the smell on my clothes and hair, I don’t notice it until with I’m at home in my own environment and have taken off my clothes, or sometimes not even until the next morning

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 31/05/2026 13:33

Was she aware she smelt?

She looked mortified I’d said something but I had to tell her that the whole team had noticed
it was so bad she must have known she was in her 30’s it was like speaking to a dirty teenager.
I don’t work there now this was years ago but she was revolting!

I understand you, however I do believe if we judge or discriminate, unless we actually go up to the person as they may not be aware/ dont care or they have a health issue, we cant stop them from living their lives.

i understand if they dont care about not wearing anything or showering, but we still dont know.
may as well let them know because if i saw someone who has period blood leaking etc, i would say. But of course we say in a calm respectable manner.

I have a sweat gland condition that I am aware of and is beyond my control.

I absolutely do not welcome strangers approaching me to let me know, because firstly - I know, and secondly I don’t wish to tell random people in supermarkets my medical background.

Grammarninja · 31/05/2026 15:48

Could you be pregnant, Op? When I was pregnant, I could smell BO off people to a sickening level when no one else could.

you're very very weird.

Lol. I'm very weird because I don't want to get into bed dirty? If I've been in the city for the day, I definitely feel grimy come evening.

Yakacm · 31/05/2026 16:51

I think there's a cultural element to it too. Lots of folk in London who grew up elsewhere in the world who come from cultures where deodorant isn't a thing, and, especially men, may think it's a bit unmanly to use perfumed sprays.

Annief64 · 31/05/2026 17:40

Could have come off a hard night shift?

No because you think you’re somehow the only human that doesn’t sweat at night. You might think you don’t but you do!

cravingicedwater · 25/05/2026 11:53

It’s actually vile. Shower in the evening before bed, stick a load of deodorant on and make sure you’re in light sheets and light pyjamas. That’s all it takes

Shower in the morning surely, especially in this weather! Have another shower at night if you want to feel fresh for bed, but starting the day with a shower will be the best way to ensure you smell fresh for the day.

Can't believe what im reading, such judgmental people on this, did it ever consider use that these people may be struggling with thier mental health, no one knows what these people wer dealing with on a daily basis, disgusting attitudes

Firstly im sorry to hear that and please forgive me if i offended you. Second, this is what i also mean about being mindful. Because OP made it seem people who smell should not carry on to live their lives, when OP may not know about health conditions in comparison to people who dont want to wash.

Im also a person who tells it how it is, especially to my friends, with strangers when it comes to BO, it doesn’t bother me to the point where im angry, but it does break my heart when people know who smells for example and rather mock or pass judgement.

So what? Why does that have to be an excuse for everything these days. Some people are just dirty bastards.

I agree. We do reap what we sow so this is why if anyone was to judge me for anything, i already know God will cover my back lol

Every second or third person on the Tube.really can't have MH problems.

Is there no antisocial behaviour that can't be excused by MH problems?

Apparently not 😩

Some people are just skanky and grim - any thread about how often people wash shows that 🤣

Revolting Disgusting attitude to have towards other people you know nothing about, don't use public transport then if it bothers you that much, for all you know they could have been working night shift and just finished, don't just assume and judge 🤮🤮

Exactly. I’ve said it before upthread but I’ve lived in multiple countries including some developing countries, it was very rare to smell BO on public transport. Don’t they have mental health issues and other medical problems in any other country? 🙄

I am sure for one or two people that’s the reason they smell, but with the amount of people like that in the UK no I’m not convinced it’s entirely or mostly down to mental health.

I was on the train the other day which thankfully was half empty so lots of spare unreserved seats and this man came sat behind me absolutely stinking. Within a minute or so I moved to a vacant seat in front of me where I could barely smell him anymore. Glad I moved.

And this is why I hate crowded trains. You are much more trapped.

Well you know nothing about them either, I’ve had mental health problems myself in the past but still managed not to stink. I’d say the onus is on the people using public transport not to stink, not for the hygienic ones to avoid it so the rank ones can stink
the place out.

or maybe you are one of the stinkers, which is why you’ve taken this so personally?

LoopyLoo1991 · 01/06/2026 08:22

More hot unwashed fanny smell on the bus this morning at 7.03am. I can't even go on top deck to hope to avoid is, as I get terrible travel nausea upstairs on buses. I'm getting a gel air freshener later and don't care how weird it looks me smelling it. I can't face my morning tea again today after that fanjo stench ...I need my caffeine fix 😭

27TimesAway · 01/06/2026 08:52

Id consider putting a dab of vicks in your nose. I had to do that when I used to visit a client who had very poor MH and hygiene- think literal aged shit smeared on chairs and walls.

Maybe tell them about their hygiene instead of talking about it to others on here as they may not be aware. Their YOUR client and you have the nerve to talk about him or her online, whether you didnt mention names, i dont think its fair. No harm in telling them in a calm respectful manner.

if they dont like to wash, change clients if its a problem. She or he has feelings too. Please be mindful of that.
