Need something to watch and seems to he alot of hype about this, any good?

OP posts:

It felt like almost every joke had been done before in something else. There have been a lot of these irreverent sort of sit coms/ movies and it didn’t feel very original. It had its moments though.

Twinkletoesandspaghettios · 23/05/2026 00:16

My favourite show used to be friends, it is now Motherland. I have watched every episode about 40 times. It’s “school Mums” on speed. As someone said above it is tongue in cheek comedy but it is based on reality.

The only episode I don’t like is Ep. 1 of season 2.

as others have said Amandaland is also great and peaks in season two but start with Motherland.

I am jealous of you. Enjoy :)

nixon1976 · 23/05/2026 00:30

I'm jealous too. I think it's brilliant. Amandaland is spot on too, although I miss Paul Ready

BreakingWaves · 23/05/2026 00:45

I enjoy Motherland (except the bloody awful final Christmas episode, which I pretend doesn't exist), it's not ground-breaking but quite clever at times.

Amandaland doesn't have the same spark for me though, I find the characters flat and it leans too heavily on being cringey.

Loved motherland just hilarious

I agree, I found it a bit cliched

In what way is it anything like Derek?

I’m not saying she’s like Derek, just that it’s the same principle as laughing at someone with special needs. Julia pathologically can’t cope to a degree that is not funny and needs mental health support. She’s also dull, depressing, humourless, aggressive, weird. Nothing about it made me laugh. I don’t know why so many women identify with it I couldn’t at all.

I've tried a couple of times but I can't stand it. I just don't find it funny at all!

Me too.

Thebinisrightthere · 23/05/2026 08:40

Yes, loved it. It's not laugh out loud hilarious a lot of the time but it's probably not supposed to be. I did find myself nearly crying with laughter at Kevin a couple of times though. Plenty of relatable parts. My dds love it too. We've just started Amandaland & it's great so far

I think it's wonderful. Deals with so many issues but in a realistic way. The characters are flawed and relatablebut also often ridiculous and comedic. It skewers (and represents) a few types of parents in a very tongue in cheek way.

The episode where Paul's parents come over to "help" has me in stitches. And it has Joanna Lumley, Diane Morgan, Lucy Punch.. What's not to love.

The actress that plays Anne is brilliant too

kerstina · 23/05/2026 08:44

Yes I love it . Will cheer me up if feeling a bit down.

See I lived Derek. I found it bittersweet. Yes Derek is ND/autistic/has special needs but the programme showed how he was kind and gentle and how his friends, colleagues and the residents loved him for being him.

I loved Derek too. The episode about the dog being PTS made me bawl my eyes out.

tothesea · 23/05/2026 14:51

I’ve just re-watched for maybe third or fourth time on the back of finishing Amandaland. DS2 watched some of it with me and kept saying ‘Amanda is so MEAN!’ I was telling him she is an exaggerated comic character based on a particular type of person. She’s not meant to be likeable. Neither is Julia ..she’s a horror. That’s why it’s funny.
I did point out the range of emotions flitting across Amanda’s face when she finds out Jonny is getting engaged. That even though she is mean we also feel sorry for her.
Just such an amazing character that Lucy Punch created.
I agree with a PP that not all the jokes land but on the whole it’s just so well observed and lots of laugh out loud moments. Enjoy OP!

tothesea · 23/05/2026 14:53

Oh and I absolutely love the theme tune!

Tonissister · 23/05/2026 15:00

I loved Motherland. Less keen on Amandaland, as it is too one-note. We know what she is like and how others respond to her, but every episode shows us the same information about her again and again. I loved the last couple of episodes of the last series though, as the other characters developed - Fi's white van persona and the brilliant make up artist cameo role by Rosie Cavaliero.

ginasevern · 23/05/2026 15:26

Can't stand Motherland or Amandaland. Both of them flat and cliched Those who think the characters are relatable, who do you mix with?

BreezyMintHiker · 23/05/2026 15:27

It’s brilliant. My go-to if there’s nothing else on. Seen it so many times now.

I loved Derek too. The episode about the dog being PTS made me bawl my eyes out.

I know the scene wasn't about Derek, but when Lizzie's husband spoke so warmly and affectionately of how he gets to fall in love with her every day I went to mush.

Geoff’s reaction to Kevin is one of the funniest things I have ever seen on TV. I love Paul’s parents.

I couldn’t relate to anyone in Motherland apart from Amanda. There are so many Amandas in London. She really minds me of an ex schoolfriend who was an equal master of the art of bitchy attack dressed up as sympathy. One of my favourites:

”Kate and Emma are looking amazing at the moment, you’d feel really sick”.

😂

Are you sure it wasn't "sic"??? 🤣

hahabahbag · 24/05/2026 13:31

Can be but also a bit cringey so depends a bit on your humour. Can’t deal with the spin off, that’s just too much

She's my least favourite character, they've over egged her dramatic responses.

Fair enough. I don't live in London. I live in Bristol which has a different vibe. Quite glad I haven't met any "Amandas"!

ExitPursuedByABare · 25/05/2026 12:55

Loved it

Mother is also very good. Gentle comedy.
