It's been over five years since I've been to a wedding - is £100 still the done thing or has it gone up like everything else??

I normally go £50, but tbh just give what you can afford.

Lomonald · 22/05/2026 12:20

£100 is fine, posters will come ok say you have to pay your dinner or whatever, but imo £100 for a gift is ideal.

Mayflower282 · 22/05/2026 12:32

I figure the bride and groom will be paying at least £100 per head, so if me and hubby go I give at least that amount to cover us (£200)

For whole day for both DH and myself attending, we used to give £100 15-20yrs ago. I'd likely give £200 for us both nowadays. It depends what you can afford though, and if it was just an evening invite or not.

Motheranddaughter · 22/05/2026 12:41

we do £100 ,more for close family

MrsClattenburg · 22/05/2026 12:46

Oooh, we have an evening do next weekend (DH work colleague) and haven't been to a wedding for 10+ years... how much do you give as an evening guest of someone you aren't that close to?

I don't think so, will check with DH but I imagine none of them (all male) will have thought that far ahead yet... TBH I've only just remembered we're going when I saw this thread!

Isthismykarma · 22/05/2026 13:14

I have 5 weddings next year to attend with my partner - that would be a grand gone in gifts before travel hotel new frock etc!
I do £50 each so £100 for a day guest and £50/£30 as a night guest.
Went to an abroad wedding and didn’t get them anything - it cost enough to go!

mindutopia · 22/05/2026 13:17

Do they have a gift registry? We had mugs that were literally £5 and I was happy if someone bought me a coffee mug! One of our closest friends bought us a cafetière and that was like £20. If you’re giving cash, £50-100 is absolutely fine for a single or a couple.

Oh well when it comes round you won't be surprised 😀 we were at a work evening reception recently i really enjoyed it, i didn't really know anyone but was a good night.

Hadalifeonce · 22/05/2026 13:21

Whatever you are happy to afford.

oopsHereItIs · 25/05/2026 13:01

Enough to cover your seat would be most considerate.

thinkprint · 25/05/2026 13:23

£200 for a wedding gift is utterly ludicrous. You do not have to cover your plate. The couple is choosing how much they are willing to spend. I have barbecues a lot and people don’t give me cash to cover my expenses because I am inviting people and therefore expect to cover the costs. I give £50 or a gift voucher equivalent, however expensive the wedding is. It actually annoys me that people give more to a couple getting married in a five star hotel with a three course meal than those who have their reception in a social club with a buffet.

We went to a wedding last year all day as a family they did a bbq the night before and all food for the wedding day and a brunch the morning after in a hotel
they are very wealthy but invited all 5 of us - we gave them £250 for John Lewis because they wanted some new bits for their new house and they were very happy with that.

night do £30-40
usual one day wedding £100

marmitedoughnut · 25/05/2026 13:27

So do you still give a gift if the person has already had £100 and the marriage only lasted about a year and now that person is getting married again?

caringcarer · 25/05/2026 13:53

I'd always cover the cost of our plates then add a bit more. If 2 get invited £150 but for family of 4 £250.

Yes of you've been invited to both wedding receptions.

Allseeingallknowing · 25/05/2026 13:57

It’s a gift, not to cover the cost of the meal!

VintageLane · 25/05/2026 13:59

We’d give £200 minimum. But you should only give what you can afford.

GinaandGin · 25/05/2026 14:13

100 each

This is obscene. I would be mortified if guests gave me £250.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 25/05/2026 15:19

Personally I give £200 if its the 2 of us

I think £50 pp is the absolute minimum i could give, I'd be mortified otherwise.
My cousins mate still talks about a family of 5 that went to my cousins wedding and "only gave 50 euro" 😅

We did £300 as a family at the last one but kids were 2 and newborn so didnt "cost anything" as they get bigger it would be 300-500 depending on closeness of b&g
