Going for an MRI and the letter says I can bring 'a CD'

to listen to while I'm in. Do they literally and only mean a CD? I don't own any any more! I can't remember the last time I used one. Is there any chance I could airdrop them a podcast or an audiobook for them to play me instead?

The clinic played their own music when I went for my MRI. They never asked me to bring my own music. Surely they will provide it?

SoScarletItWas · 19/05/2026 18:23

They asked me if there was anything I wanted to hear and they played it from Spotify (complete with adverts!)

All I know is that the letter says, 'feel free to bring a CD'.
I've had one before and they put Radio 2 on my headphones Shock without asking me. That was ages ago though, so I guess they've wised up now. But I'm hoping they've improved to the extent that I can give them a playlist or similar rather than have to buy an audiobook on CD or something.

You can probably borrow one from your local library if its an audio book CD you would like.

Yes, good point. I mean, really I'd like a podcast, but I think that might be beyond their technology.

My letter said I had a choice but they never let me and I just had to listen to whatever was on. It’s so noisy I wouldn’t have enjoyed it anyway.

Does it really matter what you listen to? It's a medical test, it's noisy, so as long as there is some kind of music to buffer that, why does it matter so much?

Roselilly36 · 19/05/2026 18:31

I have had a lot of MRI’s over the years due to my disability, if I am having what I call the full job, head, cervical and whole spine I am in the scanner about an hour or more. Never been asked to bring a cd, usually they ask me what sort of music I like and they play that. The scanners are very noisy and much helps pass the time a bit. Good luck.

Sorry, what? You seem cross, but I don't know what about.

They seem to think it might matter what you listen to, or they wouldn't invite people to bring their own audio.

Sadly Grin I could hear Radio 2 in my last one, even though it was so noisy!

I had one last week and didn’t get to take my own music (I do actually still have some CDs so I wouldn’t have minded that!) but I got to pick AC/DC from the music they had to offer. I was in the machine for around an hour so when they told me when there was 15 minutes left I told myself that was around 4 songs left to listen to and that made it seem much easier than thinking of the time. The machine itself was quite noisy over the music still so I don’t think you’d properly be able to hear a podcast or audiobook if it was the same sort of volume level.

Nitgel · 19/05/2026 18:41

Buy a cd from a charity shop?

mindutopia · 19/05/2026 19:10

I have an MRI every 3 months and they’ve never played music (honestly can’t imagine anything worse, it’s loud enough! Would be like torture with music on top of it!).

That said, my dd went on a school trip to Germany last year, like 24 hours in the coach. They asked them to ‘bring DVDs’ to watch. Apparently, only one student out of 90 of them did. So they got to enjoy Home Alone 1,2 and 3. Trip was in July. 😂

Growlybear83 · 19/05/2026 19:14

I’ve had many MRI scans and Ive always been offered the option of bringing my own CDs to help to drown out the noise of the scanner. I’ve always taken my own music - I don’t think I could stand a 30 minute scan listening to chart music 🤣

Perrygreen · 19/05/2026 19:21

The CD might skip. It would drive you mental.
I bet they can stream something.

powershowerforanhour · 19/05/2026 19:26

DD asked for, and got, Highland Radio. SWAH in Enniskillen don't mind indulging the whims of culchies :-)

It would matter to me. I don’t listen to any music ever. Not in the car, not in an MRI machine, not at the gym. So ‘as long as there is some kind of music to buffer it’ would not work for me.

HowdoyoureallyKnow · 19/05/2026 19:52

Is this private or the NHS ? If Nhs check it's working. I went and there was no music and I couldn't go through with it and had to be rescheduled to somewjeew else

No not at all.

Fair enough. Though it's so noisy inside that the music isn't even that clear, as some others have said. I mean my heartbeat was louder than the music as I was so nervous! And if you never listen to any music ever, really, why would it matter what they play?

Because I don’t listen to it because I find it so irritating that I can’t stand it. So any music would drive me absolutely bats and it would definitely matter to me if the radiographer just played any sort of music as a buffer.

Suzyloo · 19/05/2026 20:17

I went for one a few years ago and they asked me what I'd like to listen to. I chose "80s pop" so they slid me into the machine and started the music. The first song was Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Two Tribes". Would not recommend.

Exaclty what is this a bloody disco?

Ive had countless MRIs that I can barely remember how many and sometimes they play nothing and you have the earplugs in, sometimes they put the radio on, sometimes its just a mix of songs

Who cares, the banging and clanging is louder than it all anyway

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/05/2026 20:22

I've had lots of MRIs (cancer), and they usually say I can have anything from Spotify, or ask me what radio station I want. I always choose a talk radio station, as I find it comforting. Weirdly, they also give me earplugs, then put the headphones over the top. Drowns out some of the MRI noise, but I could still hear the radio!

VividDeer · 19/05/2026 20:24

I take ear plugs, proper silicone ones not foam rubbish they provide
