Going for an MRI and the letter says I can bring 'a CD'

to listen to while I'm in. Do they literally and only mean a CD? I don't own any any more! I can't remember the last time I used one. Is there any chance I could airdrop them a podcast or an audiobook for them to play me instead?

They will provide something if you don’t bring anything - but it might be Enya

I’ve been an MRI radiographer for 30 years on and off . Machines differ , scans differ and technology differs but if you are nervous and /or prefer to have music let them know beforehand and the should endeavour to sort it out

I let 2 different hospitals know that I wanted music and, despite having told me to bring a cd, neither then let me have any music at all.

I hated the first one and then the second one even more and was having a major panic attack. I will never have another unless I can have music

Toddlerteaplease · 21/05/2026 12:07

I have had loads of MRI’s and taken lots of children for them. I have never had the option to listen to music and neither have they.

They asked me if there was anything I wanted to hear and they played it from Spotify (complete with adverts!)

I got YouTube (nonpremium) and it had more ads than music last time! I suggested a band and they were happy to search and do that but the ads were frequent, long and repetitive and drove me nuts! I’d have preferred nothing tbh, and it was for about half an hour and I think I got 4 songs! Time before that (different hospital) I can’t remember what they played but it at least wasn’t filled with ads.

I still don't get why you need to listen to anything, but if you do why can't you just listen to Radio 2? It's an MRI, not a weekend in a luxury hotel, you really aren't there for that long. Confused

I still don't get why some people can't imagine that others might have different preferences and wants Grin or why you feel the need to be snarky about 'luxury hotels'.
I'll say it again, in case it helps: I had R2 last time and it annoyed me.
How long, by your rules, does something have to last before I'm allowed to be annoyed by it/prefer something else?

I have had 2 MRIs at 2 different hospitals. Both said I could take a cd but then both said on the day they could not play them and had no music to offer. I really struggled with panic and do think music would have helped

Oh, that's awful. I hope they helped/reassured you when they realised you were panicking?

The invitation letter probably hasn't been updated since the 80s. My tenancy agreement says I can't play my gramophone loudly 🤣

Grin Do you play it quietly?

I'm sorry you had that experience. I'd hope MRI staff would be a bit more organised and sensitive than that.

@notnorman I had one of those let’s fake a heart attack , well it feels like one MRI. I had Motown and it it took an hour. Someone mentioned they do not like metal because it gets hot. That is not the reason it’s a machine that uses huge magnetic power and if for instance you had metal it would pull it and it could seriously injure you and damage the machine.

It’s not only being organised or sensitive, not all scanners have the facility to play music and it doesn’t always work . If you say you’re nervous in advance they may be able to put you in one that does play music . Last one I had ( I’m claustrophobic) they let me watch a movie and it was fab - actually relaxing . But it was in the super expensive new scanner .

Yes, I do get that. If the letter says to bring music, though, you'd think they can. Or maybe they could be more careful with the letters and not just send a boilerplate one that doesn't apply to each location.
And the poster says, 'neither then let me have any music at all', which implies that they had the capacity and just didn't do it.

Back in the 90’s in Liverpool they always had Talk Sport playing! I hated it!!

I’ve had uncountable number of scans and have never taken my own music. I prefer it without tbh.

Talk Sport, Christ. I feel for you.

Who knew we were all the same, eh? Well I guess we should all be doing the same job, wearing the same clothes, doing the same activities…
I totally agree with you, it is ridiculously shortsighted to make comments like that and clearly not helpful to someone asking for advice! Breaking news for the pp but guess what? A LOT of people find MRIs difficult, for various reasons, and it’s extremely common. And that’s why every time I’ve had one they’ve always offered headphones to play something for you, whether that be radio, Spotify, whatever. It’s extremely normal. But hey, pp, you go, girl, it must be fab being you!

I had an MRI four weeks ago, I don't remember any music, if there was I don't recall hearing it. If you don't have any CDs surely you can just listen to anything they provide? I had to stop and start breathing all through it so I can't imagine music as well as instructions.

Edited

I also had to do the stop/start breathing thing, throughout the 30 mins I was in there last time. It is not difficult to have music playing in the background, quietly, and to follow their instructions, which come through much louder. Multi-tasking. Who’d have thought!? They don’t blare the music through the headphones. I’ve not had a single mri that I’ve not been offered music of one kind or the other, it’s perfectly normal.
eta: your further reply to op (about the spa!) was pretty snarky and completely unnecessary. It’s clear the op was asking for advice as she finds it easier to manage with the distractions, lots of people do, and it’s very common for them to ask if you want music and to play the radio or ask if there’s anything you’d like to listen to.

I saw a couple of posts re metal, such as piercings etc. Definitely take everything off! The first one I ever had I’d gone into the room in the robe but still had my bra on. I had to take it off and I was stood close enough that it flew out of my hand and stuck to the machine 😂 so, please imagine that happening if you’ve any piercings etc anywhere. Ouch! But they always double check before you go in there anyway. Obviously it’s so much easier and quicker if you can just wear not too thickish clothes, but with no metal anywhere at all (like a cotton crop type bra instead of a bra, eg), because they’ll often then let you go in like that and you don’t have to faff about getting in and out of gowns.
