What do you do at the weekend?

Every weekend my husband and I ask each other what we are going to do and never have any idea! Children are all grown up now so it’s just the 2 of us. He works away Mon-Friday so we like to spend time together but I guess we’ve run out of ideas! We go for walks, meals, shopping, cinema. We’re not big drinkers. It’s Friday night and we’re stuck again - what are you doing tomorrow?

Nothing. We work all week, long hours. The weekends sees everybody out and everywhere is too busy. Urgh. Not our thing. Why on earth would you want to go into the local town on a weekend ???? Horrific and sheep followers. Likewise supermarkets .. "its the weekend, let's all go to the supermarket". No thanks. We shop online..we stay at home most weekends unless we're going to friends or them to us. Soo much cheaper and easier and far much better than any pub. Restaurants charge stupid money for crap food. Unless high end, we can make it cheaper and easier at home .

You and your DH sound like a real fun couple. Bet you share a bourbon cream for a bit of excitement!

NewLeafAgain · 15/05/2026 23:15

I like browsing sites like Eventbrite for small scale events on locally. Recent ones are walking tours talking about significant local women in the last few hundred years, a drop in crafting session creating a community tapestry, talks about mermaids in folklore, traditional Persian cooking classes, etc

Could you and OH plan something for one weekend a month each so 2 weekends have a plan and the others are just pottering?

Allotment. Make ceramics. Try new recipes. Go to towns and cities within an hour or so of us and walk around. Organise the house. Go hiking. Husband does multiple outing sports related hobbies. Work on my post grad. Do admin for my volunteering job. Husband works on his masters and does lots of things with his volunteer job. Gardening. DIY. Sleep. Watch movies. Read books.

but we do have a 10 and 13 year old in tow and so we also do transporting them to hobbies on Friday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday morning.

food shopping comes Friday night.

we have a pizza oven so some weekends I’ll make dough and we’ll make far too much pizza and garlic bread and eat it until we groan.

You pack a lot in on weekends. Aren't you tired from working all week or do you work part time?

Snippit · 15/05/2026 23:43

My husband works M-F, I no longer work due to having M.S. I try to make sure we have time for each other at the weekend. Sat morning he plays golf, afterwards we tend to pop out for a leisurely pub meal. Sundays is always a relaxing morning, cup of tea in bed, walk the dogs and sorting the garden out now everything is growing again.

We’ve decided to treat ourselves to a National Trust membership and have some long weekends visiting various different attractions. We live close to Chatsworth House, it’s beautiful. Just one visit to the house is around £35 each, the membership will save us a fortune, plus free parking, can’t wait for new adventures 🤗

I've loved reading all of these ideas! I've three young children, we have a movie night with treats every Friday night, then Saturday and Sunday, playing at home, usually go out for majority of the day if no one has a party. Then Sunday big clean and tidy in the morning, walk in the woods, grandad comes over. I like to see a friend for coffee each weekend if I can too! Then there's inevitably planning and work to squeeze in (teacher). I love the weekends!

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 16/05/2026 06:12

I have National Trust membership & there are some lovely houses, gardens & walks locally or sometimes DD17 & I pop across the border into Devon.

CommonCents · 16/05/2026 06:14

I stare at DH and he says, "What do you want to do," and I say, "What do you want to do," Then, we do nothing and suddenly it's Monday!

WonderingWanda · 16/05/2026 06:19

Decorating, gardening, household chores.
Weekends away often linked to a gig, visits to family.
We still have kids at home so often ferrying them back and forth to sports competitions.
Walks and bike rides together or go off and exercise individually.
Go in the hot tub. Host other people for a meal, party, bbq or relatives for the weekend and all the cleaning, shopping, cooking washing that entails.
Lots of work, we both have jobs that we need to work over the weekend.

No it's your bad personality

Please stop trying to blame it on biology

Exactly. I think it was peri and menopause that made me wake up to the idea that I spent too much time at work and didn't have enough time for all the walks, museums, galleries, coastal areas, country parks etc etc that I wanted to visit so I dropped my hours to 4 days a week so my weekend is 3 days and I have more time to get out and about.

Today I'm checking out a local arts festival and seeing a show tonight after pre theatre dinner. Yesterday I went to the city art gallery, museum and saw some street theatre. Tomorrow going hiking. All within an hour of home.

GnomeDePlume · 16/05/2026 06:53

Allotment and sewing.

We are retiring over the next 3 years and looking forward to doing more of the same with added DGCs (currently babies).

Bjorkdidit · 16/05/2026 06:55

Second the National Trust membership.

Or a National Art pass, which is what I have. Mainly so I can get into the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for free, I go there at least once a month but there's loads of other places you can use it.

Miordle · 16/05/2026 07:12

DH and I WFH running online businesses so we're always in each other's faces M-F. We have primary-aged DCs so mostly focus on them in the morning on Saturdays: going to a farm, family attractions or activities. In the afternoon DH usually has some football/rugby match to watch and I will work out, resistance train or go on a walk. Tonight, we're going to a black tie event and my in-laws are over to help with DCs. Tomorrow, we'll take my in-laws out for a Sunday Roast and then possibly another local family attraction with DCs.

Chatsworth House isn't National Trust I'm afraid ( neither is Haddon Hall). I wish they were.

Vivienne1000 · 16/05/2026 07:29

You could join The National Trust and visit new places. I care for my Dad on a Saturday and my husband gets jobs done at home. Sundays usually involve gardening and a walk. We both work full time, so I love pottering at home.

Squirrelchops1 · 16/05/2026 07:37

Not a lot.
Gym, walk dog.
OH might go mountain biking.
Today we're going out to a town we love and having a walk along the canal.
Usually have a lunch or dinner out.
Evenings we tend to stay at home and watch a film.
Recent weekends have been taken up with sorting out drawers, selling on vinted, going up the skip.
So quite lazy really.

jazzyjames · 16/05/2026 08:14

I separated from my husband last summer after 25 years so I'm really working on how I want to spend my time. This weekend has included dinner with family and then drinks with friends last night. Today will be the gym for a workout and swim, pottering in the garden, crafts at home and cooking a new recipe later. On Sundays I tend to visit a national trust property nearby. I love my weekends now. Previously they were just spent watching telly or cleaning!

FurForksSake · 16/05/2026 08:22

@blueshoes I work full time and I’m disabled and chronically ill. I’m permanently exhausted. We don’t fit all of that in every weekend and some weekends I stay home while the family do things as I’m not up to anything.

this weekend the kids have music centre, I’m cooking for a bbq later we are going to, I’m going to walk up to my allotment and I’ll tidy some of my pottery bits.

tomorrow I have to take one kid swimming while dh does a number of hours at his sport. I’m planning to write half an essay tomorrow and plant some seeds.

dh is running around camp planning and doing a million chores.

we have a cleaner and buy in as much help as we can.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 16/05/2026 08:25

Chores. All weekend. Or sit down with a drink - tea/g&t depending on the mood. Read a book. Go to bed early so I can walk the dogs early and exercise afterwards.

Sunday is always ironing/gardening/food prep for the week ahead.

We have a 16&18yr old so nearly at your stage.

Tiddlywinks63 · 16/05/2026 08:32

When I was working the weekend was spent catching up on everything that hadn’t got done during the week, housework, laundry, gardening etc.
Since I retired the days all meld into each other, nothing much to differentiate between them!
This weekend I am going to do more crafting, pootling around and suiting myself. DH does much the same, he’ll walk the dogs this morning, we do the afternoon walk together.
I like my quiet life 😊

MrsClattenburg · 16/05/2026 08:34

We're currently away at the coast - nothing fancy, we just had a whole weekend free so decided to make the most of it. We were out for (too many!) drinks last night and will go for a long beach walk this morning before heading back home and out going out with friends tonight.

Tomorrow will be a long gym session and jobs - food shopping, decorating, cleaning and Netflix before the week starts again!

FernandoSor · 16/05/2026 08:35

Sport (we both compete and coach). Music (we both play in bands and go to lots of gigs). And desperately trying to get all the chores - shopping, cleaning, laundry done because we hate doing it during the working week.

This weekend we are playing at a music festival in the morning then going to London for a gig, Then tomorrow I have a race and DP is coaching. By Sunday evening we will both be absolutely knackered. Just in time for work on Monday!

lurkingfromhome · 16/05/2026 08:36

Housework, the never-ending decluttering project, selling stuff on Vinted, food shop, but try not to spend too long on those.

Long lie, I'll go for a run or lift some weights, we both love the outdoors so there will be a long walk somewhere, either hills or beach or an NT garden, followed by a drink/coffee/lunch in country pub type thing, sometimes with other family members. Sometimes I'll meet a friend for coffee and cake. Occasionally we'll go into town and go to a museum/cinema/out for dinner. Gardening if the weather is good. Make nice dinners. Lie around with the Sunday papers. Watch a movie.

OrangeJellySnakes · 16/05/2026 08:39

I’m recovering a bit of functionality having come out of a chronic illness too and work full time but I love to find joy in small things - so today we’re going to a local farmers market and meeting adult daughter there (that we can get to on the bus), then we’ll come back and watch the Hearts game and then the FA cup (adult son is going to the game).

Cooking a roast chicken tonight with all the trimmings! Here’s hoping for a hearts and Chelsea win!

Mumofyellows · 16/05/2026 08:45

We have two dogs so long walks with a picnic/thermos in the winter, visit our local pub, walk into town with the dogs for coffee, watch films, go to the gym to work out then have a swim/sauna/steam, tonight we are going to the cinema which we quite often do…
