What is wrong with frozen baked potatos??

Bought some from the local shop, DS has 3 wobbly teeth and wanted soft food. Its a trek to a supermarket so popped to the nisa. Frozen spuds. How bad can they be??

What an odd texture! I used "proper" butter and ...it just seemed to disappear. The spuds are small and I added loads of butter and its like it was just absorbed! How? Where did it go? Added loads more, and still they were dry and powdery. Was I unlucky?

Which brand did you get? The McCain's ones are usually good!

tryandbepositive · Yesterday 18:40

Second McCains

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Yesterday 18:42

I'm not usually bothered by brands, but McCain are by far the best frozen jackets.

Pearlstillsinging · Yesterday 18:43

They are a complete waste of money! You can cook a raw potato, which Costa a fraction of the price, in the microwave for about the same length of time as a frozen one.

McCain ones are the best.

Nah, the frozen ones are baked before being frozen so you get that lovely taste from the skin. Spuds cooked only in the microwave are an abomination.

I've tried the McCains ones, and personally, I think they're awful. There is definitely something weird about the texture.

I kind of agree, but I think the frozen ones are even worse!

If I'm in a hurry, I tend to start them in the microwave and finish them in the air fryer.

We only ever get mccains, tried cheaper ones and their gross

twilightcafe · Yesterday 18:51

McCains are the way to go. Tried Sainsbury's own-brand...yuk

Framboisery · Yesterday 18:55

I cook raw potatoes in the microwave, 2 mins full power, then turn over for another 2 mins full power. Then stick a skewer through to act as a heat conductor and finish off in an oven for about 20 minutes.

Bemyclementine · Yesterday 18:58

They were McCains!!

I didnt have any actual potatoes in otherwise id have done the part microwave part oven.

It's because potato, when cooked and cooled, converts its digestible starch into resistant starch. This remains after reheating. It's actually a lot healthier, but it does have a slightly different texture.

tiramisugelato · Yesterday 18:58

The McCains ones are fine, I have one most weeks.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 19:18

I'm amazed that so many people seem to think the McCains ones are ok. I find them totally unenjoyable. How are people cooking them?

Six minutes in the microwave.

Start in the microwave, them into the air fryer for a few minutes on max until it goes crispy (unless the oven's already on in which case it goes in there).

I'm the only one in the house who likes jacket potatoes, and I can't justify cooking them the proper way for so long just for me.

Thank you. Tried microwaving them according to the instructions. Tried them in the oven. And tried them in the air fryer. I just can't get on with them!

I'm not a fan of microwaving ordinary potatoes but I would take that over the frozen variety. I can't understand how other people seem to get them to be edible!!

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · Yesterday 19:23

They’re rank. Even the McCains ones.
I do a normal potato for 5 mins in the microwave, rub with olive oil and salt then 30 mins in the oven.

They aren’t great but they are the best ones out there imo

Don't get me wrong they're not as good as oven cooked, but DH isn't a fan and I often do them after work when I'm starving and don't want to wait 😂

Funnily enough, that's why I tried them. Neither DH nor DD like jacket potato of any variety so I thought it would be good to have something quick and easy that just I could eat. They just don't do it for me, unfortunately!

Why would anyone cook a frozen baked potato? Just buy normal large potatoes, prick them all over, stick in the oven (not microwave) for 1.5 hours, take them out. cut quarterwise and fill with seasoning, butter and cheese. Perfect. And they taste so much better.

Because not everyone has time to wait 1.5 hours for one to cook, nor does everyone have access to an oven.

The Bannisters ones from Iceland are quite good
