What is wrong with frozen baked potatos??

Bemyclementine · 15/05/2026 18:32

Bought some from the local shop, DS has 3 wobbly teeth and wanted soft food. Its a trek to a supermarket so popped to the nisa. Frozen spuds. How bad can they be??

What an odd texture! I used "proper" butter and ...it just seemed to disappear. The spuds are small and I added loads of butter and its like it was just absorbed! How? Where did it go? Added loads more, and still they were dry and powdery. Was I unlucky?

I'm not a snob when it comes to frozen food, but IME frozen baked potatoes are minging. JMO. It's so easy to just do it with a fresh potato. I microwave it for 5 minutes, (sort of two thirds cooks it,) then I stick it in the oven for 20 minutes, to bake it. The amount of time depends on the size of the potato of course.

OR just do it in the microwave, takes 6 to 8 minutes, depending on its size.

Why would anyone cook a frozen baked potato? Just buy normal large potatoes, prick them all over, stick in the oven (not microwave) for 1.5 hours, take them out. cut quarterwise and fill with seasoning, butter and cheese. Perfect. And they taste so much better.

Suggesting baking potatoes (in the oven) for 1.5 HOURS is bonkers! That's a shit-load of gas or electric used! Particularly daft if you are only doing one!

They are a complete waste of money! You can cook a raw potato, which Costa a fraction of the price, in the microwave for about the same length of time as a frozen one.

A potato can be softened / cooked in a microwave but you are more or less steaming it . It is not a jacket potato . It needs to be brushed in oil before being put in an oven or air fryer to crisp up before it can be called a jacket potato.

tiramisugelato · 15/05/2026 19:38

Because not everyone has time to wait 1.5 hours for one to cook, nor does everyone have access to an oven.

Not everybody has access to an oven? In which world?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/05/2026 19:42

5-10 minutes in the microwave, depending on spud size, then 10 minutes in a hot oven to crisp the skins. Mmm. Waste of money buying yucky frozen ones.

Are you seriously asking why someone would buy something that takes 1.5 hours to make over something that takes 6 minutes?! 🤣

i agree that mccains ones are good

Probably - but I don't understand how anybody could live without an oven.

Always 'privilege'! No, I am a normal hard-working person who - wow- has an oven!

OrangeJellySnakes · 15/05/2026 19:45

Microwave for 5 mins and then finish them off in the air fryer for the skin to be nice and crispy

Like I said, bonkers post! Why would ANYone cook something in the oven for 1.5 hours (90 minutes,) when it can be cooked in the microwave in 6-7 minutes?! Confused

Bonkers.

Yes, microwave then oven. Baking potatoes are almost the only food that I still find incredibly cheap, along with root ginger. I bought one yesterday for 32p. They must be cheaper than the frozen ones?

Definitely not the same result though

Privileged, yes, because you can't imagine for a fleeting second that some people may not have access to an oven.

Why are so many posters insistent that they must be cheap?

maybe other people don’t care about spending a few more quid on frozen potatoes

TirednessOnToast · 15/05/2026 19:51

I found myself in a Weatherspoons (😔) I ordered a 'loaded' baked potato, thinking it would be safe. It was like cotton wool. Absolutely horrible and with no flavour at all, despite being 'loaded' with vege chili & cheese. I assume they are frozen /microwave d.

It's because potato, when cooked and cooled, converts its digestible starch into resistant starch. This remains after reheating. It's actually a lot healthier, but it does have a slightly different texture.

Interesting. This explains why you can never get the fluffy texture back if you dont eat them straight out of the oven. They are more solid if that makes sense. Its always annoyed me

100% this.

i use them as they don't spike my blood sugar as much.

i cook them in the microwave for 4 minutes, then rub a little oil and sprinkle a little salt and finish in the airfryer

PickAChew · 15/05/2026 19:56

I find most of them have leathery skin and a soggy texture but I usually like the mini Bannister's ones.

I can understand spending more on frozen ones if they tasted better!

Cosleepingadvice · 15/05/2026 20:04

We have the frozen mccain ones as a lunch back up in the freezer. Im generally the only one in the house who eats them - i do 5mins in the microwave then 5mins in the airfryer and it gets it near enough to a proper one. Its not as good as a slow cooked oven jacket but if I ended up unexpectedly having to go into the office rather than wfh, i dont risk the fresh ones going bad etc. At least this way I always have something reliable in the freezer for lunch.

How long do you do them in the airfyer for @tigger1001 and what temp please?

And if you like them, that’s fine and makes perfect sense! I think they’re rank so wouldn’t eat them however convenient they were.
