Would you class this family as average, comfortable or well off?

Curious what people would class as “well off” these days?

Couple in late 30s with 2 dc (late primary/early secondary age). Not in London.
Partner A earns £52k and Partner B earns £74k. So fairly average wage. Neither majorly stressful roles. Both work full time. Home by 5 each evening. Both can wfh 2 days a week.

Both get annual bonuses of around 8% and usually salary increases of about 4% each year.

Mortgage outstanding is £339k on a house worth around £500k (5-bedroom house).

Pension contributions (employee + employer combined):

  • Partner A: 17% (this will be increasing)
  • Partner B: 21%

Savings:
usually save a third of income each month.

  • £130k joint savings
  • £40k saved separately for the dc.

No inheritance or family help received. No loans, car finance, credit card debt or student loans.
No childcare or private school costs.
Lifestyle-wise, usually one big family holiday a year plus a couple of weekends away.

Would you consider this comfortably well off, average, affluent, or something else? Genuinely interested as perceptions seem wildly different depending on area and social circle.

Those salaries are not ‘fairly average’. I’d like a stress free , home by 5pm job for either of those salaries.

stardrops1 · 15/05/2026 12:06

Are you looking for people to tell you how well off you are, OP? This is quite an odd thread.

notatinydancer · 15/05/2026 12:08

Greyorcream · 15/05/2026 12:01

they work in office roles in a manufacturing company. B is supervisor role.

Any links to similar jobs / indsustries. Finding this a bit hard to believe.

average salary is £32-39k per year, the mean average is £40k. so the wages are 57% more than mean average

average savings is £20k and this couple have 550% more than that with £130k in savings

The house at £500k is 87% more than the cost of an average house in uk at £267k

this couple are not average by any stretch

Id suggest they are comfortable

yoshigizzit · 15/05/2026 12:12

Those figures are very similar to ours (wages are not average, speaking literally) and I’d say we are between comfortable and well off. I won’t say fully well off as I wouldn’t say we are so flush that we can do what we want when we want which I feel well off is, I still budget pretty ruthlessly to make our money work hard.

But our money worries are about our wants rather than our needs, so comfortable has to be the base line, well off is more subjective.

caffelatte100 · 15/05/2026 12:14

From what you've said OP, I would consider this salary/savings etc to be in very comfortable category and that they are good with money and saving.

I'd say the couple are doing very well for their relatively young ages also given that they are not workng really long hours since both are back by 5 pm. That's nice to be able to spend that time with their children.

Above average but no, I don't consider that the couple are really wealthy or in the rich category.

Stoicandhappy · 15/05/2026 12:15

Affluent

Dariara · 15/05/2026 12:15

Middle class

Sparrowsandbudgies · 15/05/2026 12:17

Well off, middle class.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/05/2026 12:17

Greyorcream · 15/05/2026 12:04

Ok so a bit above average.

Not really

7in1Pond · 15/05/2026 12:18

Obviously much richer than average.

OTOH I bet their lifestyle is pretty much what people think of when they thing of an average lifestyle. People who actually earn average salaries don't live like that any more.

Mumof1andacat · 15/05/2026 12:18

Why do you ask?

Hopefulsalmon · 15/05/2026 12:19

Well off

StephQ1 · 15/05/2026 12:19

Stoicandhappy · 15/05/2026 12:15

Affluent

Stick a 0 on the end and maybe that’d be an accurate description.

glaciercherry · 15/05/2026 12:19

Isn’t average salary £36k?

Soontobe60 · 15/05/2026 12:20

The current average salary in the UK is £39k. So a couple would earn £78k. You earn £126k combined, so way above average salary, in fact £48k above average.

Puffinsandcoffee · 15/05/2026 12:20

Hahahaha a bit above average. Jesus Christ.

In response to your question I'd see these people as rich. If they thought they were "a bit above average" wealth id avoid socialising with them (not that I'd be likely to ever know them).

Honestly a bit nauseated by this.

Climbingoutofthered · 15/05/2026 12:21

I would call it well off - but not rich or affluent!

if this is you OP congrats ! Well done 👍

Catsandbooksaremybag · 15/05/2026 12:22

Well off! I'm classed as being on a decent wage for my position in my industry as just under £32k. No dependants, renting and very small savings. No car either. I manage pretty well on this.

dunroamingfornow · 15/05/2026 12:22

They are not average wages. Average wage is £39k !

This is how I feel, above average but not wealthy or rich per se.

tartyflette · 15/05/2026 12:25

Clearly they are quite comfortably off.
