Does anyone still have matching bedding, curtains and wallpaper?

Watching Keeping Up Appearances and of course Hyacinth has bedding that matches her bedroom wallpaper. It reminded me of my mother who had the same, as did I for a little while, my mum liked sets that had curtains and lampshades matching too. It was clearly seen as the done thing amongst the aspiring lot. Although could seem overdone.
I remember the baby’s nursery being the same too, you could get the matching towels, changing mats, baby seats etc.

I wondered if anyone still does it? Is it even an option now?

Well, I don’t think Keeping Up Appearances is viewed by many these days as a high point of interior design!

ETA I write novels and fell down an internet rabbit hole looking for an appropriately horrible 90s duvet and pillowcase set for my midfield-aged heroine when she ends up back in her teenage bedroom. God, there were some horrors.

Nope! My mum had matching duvet cover and curtains for a while, but it was a BIG room and balanced out by a lot of neutrals. And it was 30 years ago!

IceStationZebra · 15/05/2026 19:40

I had sun, moon and stars everything in 1997! Lampshade, curtains and bedding. A quilt/bedspread lives on as a dog blanket 😆

TheBoyMayorOfPartridge · 15/05/2026 19:42

My mum loved that look for a while back there too!

DD currently has one set of bedding that matches her curtains, but we tend to alternate between a Frozen set and a Stitch set that got handed down by her cousins, and the rest of the room is fairly neutral.

DS had Postman Pat curtains, duvet and lampshade in the mid 90s

I re a girl friend that had strawberry shortcake curtains bedding etc.
We were 15 and it was rather off putting oh and it was new not from when she was younger ..81.

It was definitely a thing when we bought our first house. Curtains, wallpaper, border (!) , bedding. We never got as far as lampshades, but they were available. All M&S.
But that was 50 years ago. Sadly none have survived

RaraRachael · 15/05/2026 20:27

In 1987 I had matching absolutely everything for the bedroom in M and S Japan design.

Bedding
Wallpaper
Curtains
Mob cap lampshade
Trinket box
Pitcher and bowl 😅

It sounds ridiculous now but I thought it was the height of style and sophistication.

Nowadays I have no matching stuff.

*oops - 40 years ago. I am not quite that old.

Blundl · 15/05/2026 20:30

It was very fashionable at one stage to have everything Laura Ashley, we couldn't afford that though

I was just going to write the same!!! I also covered my school books in the left over wallpaper 🤣

BertieBotts · 15/05/2026 20:47

I remember the little rolls of border wallpaper you could put at the top of the walls, or in the middle as a sort of modern alternative to a dado rail Grin

And the scrunchy paint effect achieved by taking half of it off with a damp rag á la Changing Rooms!

BertieBotts · 15/05/2026 20:48

Always peach for some reason. Who knows why peach was considered such a sophisticated colour - I find it immediately dates things now.

HoraceCope · 15/05/2026 20:49

i never did and could never understand it
surely you change your duvet cover?

And with grey.

We looked at a house 13 years ago which is affectionately known as the twee house as every bedroom had matching bedding, curtains, pelmets, chair with full cover.
Even the bathroom had similar treatment, shower curtain, toilet seat covers, frilly blinds, carpet on the steps up to the bath!!

FoulBlister · 15/05/2026 20:55

I am still teasing my friend because everything on her wedding list was Eternal Beau patterned. She gets me back by serving my food on their last remaining plate every time I go round. I bought her the set in 1988.

I got married in 1984 and people gave me parts of the Eternal Beah set ats presents so I eventually had the whole set

I'm pretty certain it was compulsory during those years.

I cut photos of the things i wanted from the Argos catalogue and stuck them on my hand written wedding list which was passed from aunt to neighbour to friend.

Imagine that now!?!?

Ilikealltings · 15/05/2026 21:13

No, BUT i want too!

Ilikealltings · 15/05/2026 21:14

Time has come round

OchreReader · 15/05/2026 21:18

Did people actually put matching wallpaper on door panels too? I’ve seen that on old shows but can’t remember ever seeing it in anyone’s house, even in the 70s 😂

My granny had two bathrooms, each with all the matching accessories.

She took it a stage further… and always had matching coloured loo roll (was this a normal thing in the 80s/ 90s?).

One was mint green, the other inevitably peach.

MajorLanceYouDontWantMeNoMoreNsoul · 15/05/2026 21:23

Yip coloured loo roll to match the suite was definitely a thing.
