Does anyone still have matching bedding, curtains and wallpaper?

Watching Keeping Up Appearances and of course Hyacinth has bedding that matches her bedroom wallpaper. It reminded me of my mother who had the same, as did I for a little while, my mum liked sets that had curtains and lampshades matching too. It was clearly seen as the done thing amongst the aspiring lot. Although could seem overdone.
I remember the baby’s nursery being the same too, you could get the matching towels, changing mats, baby seats etc.

I wondered if anyone still does it? Is it even an option now?

Nope! Last time I had that was when I was 11 or 12. Blue clouds and white sky and reversed. Curtains wallpaper the lot!

HappyToSmile · 15/05/2026 21:25

My friend's bedroom had cherries.... duvet set, curtains and wallpaper. I was so jealous!! (Must have been about 1986).
My sister had very Laura Ashley style curtains/cushions and wallpaper when she moved out.

I remember the little rolls of border wallpaper you could put at the top of the walls, or in the middle as a sort of modern alternative to a dado rail Grin

And the scrunchy paint effect achieved by taking half of it off with a damp rag á la Changing Rooms!

Hah! I remember the border wallpaper!

Blundl · 15/05/2026 21:26

I had matching loo roll, it was definitely a thing.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/05/2026 21:27

Not matching but who recalls the white with sort of veined tiles? We had them in blue in the bathroom and green in the kitchen. In a cafe in SW England I saw a bathroom with same tiles in pink vein, as a child.

Not had that set up since it was Paddington Bear decor in my room! Would probably go back to a Paddington theme now if I wasn’t 47 and sharing a bedroom with my husband.

Did people actually put matching wallpaper on door panels too? I’ve seen that on old shows but can’t remember ever seeing it in anyone’s house, even in the 70s 😂

I've done that in my current house! Oh no, is everyone secretly thinking I'm Hyacinth Bouquet.

Fizbosshoes · 15/05/2026 21:31

I have matching lampshade and curtains, bought last year....and have bought wallpaper ...for one wall only....but i have already committed many many MN decor crimes so this might be another to add!

I renovated a house in France a few years ago that had wallpapered doors! They also love random stickers !

In the late 90s as newlyweds we had yellow and blue Laura Ashley bedding and I made matching curtains, tie-backs lampshades and cushions.

Hilariously hideous to look back on now, but I thought it was lovely at the time.

binliner · 15/05/2026 21:33

House of Hackney offer that option!

They were nicknamed chicken tiles because the pattern if viewed a certain way looked like a bird.

My Mum used to go into Laura Ashley, and come home with wallpaper, curtains, and matching bedding. I now have a very active dislike of busy florals Grin

I've got about 6 different fabrics in our bedroom but they all tone into the same colour palette and are all different textures (I work in interiors and thankfully get things at trade price so I've gone a bit mad on Colefax & Fowler). My latest buy was piglet in bed linen bedding which DH mutters is like sleeping in a sack - I keep telling him it needs to wear in.

i never did and could never understand it
surely you change your duvet cover?

I don’t remember my mum washing our duvet covers very often at all.

My MIL doesn’t either and as far as I’m aware I don’t think that generation did?. My mum certainly seemed to do less washing than I do now!

Daisy62 · 15/05/2026 21:46

I had matching Mothercare curtains and cot duvet set for one of my babies in the 1990s. It was so bright and cheerful compared to the muted shades I see in today’s nurseries. Everything is dated after a while though isn’t it? Everything we buy today will look ‘tired’ or so we’ll think, in years to come. That’s capitalist-driven consumerism for you.

CookingFatCat · 15/05/2026 21:51

I remember this too! There was a designer called Linda Beard and she designed matching everything called Dolly Mixtures. We had a bedroom done up with it, I loved it!!

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 15/05/2026 21:51

Not for me, but every time I watch Gogglebox I'm always a bit fascinated by Giles and Mary's choice to match their chair to the wallpaper.

I did a spare bedroom recently and found a blind I liked in the John Lewis sale. Then saw they had the matching bedding and I bought it. I knew I would regret it but I had decision fatigue, and the rest of the room does not match, so maybe it’s ok, but maybe not. Oh dear I’ve committed another Mumsnet crime. I already have a toilet brush.

I got married in 1984 and people gave me parts of the Eternal Beah set ats presents so I eventually had the whole set

Same! Also in 1984…😂 I remember my friend getting the Eternal Bow soup tureen…that had a lid! I was so jealous…thinking this was the height of sophistication!

My first ‘married house’ in 1984 was bedecked in matching Laura Ashley EVERYTHING! I even had Laura Ashley bridesmaid dresses at my wedding! 😂

Aspirex · 15/05/2026 22:06

Nope i dont have either, no curtains no wallpapper and no carpet.

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 15/05/2026 22:14

Yes, I’m always being spammed by Vanessa Arbuthnott. And not hating it.

stringbean · 15/05/2026 22:20

I had Laura Ashley matching stuff as a teenager - duvet cover, curtains, one wall of wallpaper and a lampshade I think? It was a flower pattern on a lavender-blue background- called floribunda, as I recall. (Bit naff - it was the 80s - but I loved it at the time).

As a young child in the 70s everything was 2nd hand; no wallpaper, 2nd hand curtains and Lino on the floor until a 2nd hand carpet was procured from a relative’s house, with a big oil stain in the middle. My mum cut and fitted the carpet and then made a rug from a kit to cover the oil stain.
