The distinct smell of cannabis in places in our house...but it's not weed?

Clubtropicanasun · 14/05/2026 07:26

There are about 2 places in our house where we all get an overwhelming smell of weed! It's just bizarre. Downstairs hallway and toilet. It is definitely not cannabis and it's not neighbours either - terraced house but our neighbours are in their 70s and def not smokers.

Is there anything else that smells like weed that we should be exploring? Under floorboards etc. Thanks

This might be odd OP, but have you had any new carpets fitted recently?
We had some laid recently and they definitely a similar aroma. The smell was contained within the wrapping it came in, like it was part of the factory process or something

Oooohhhh this may explain why I’ve had this exact smell in the utility room in the last few weeks - new carpet laid in the adjacent room!
I’m glad this is an explanation, as like @Clubtropicanasun I also thought I was going a little mad…

No, we don't have any carpets anywhere in the house!

Thanks everyone. Interesting reading! It's definitely not neighbours, or DCs. There's nothing in the hallway except shoe box and coats - I've gone through everything and none of it specifically smells. It could be something under the floorboards - no carpets. I don't know. Will have to keep checking

Hi OP, look I don't want to antagonistic here (it's not a divisive topic that people replying to you are going to get worked up about) but how can you be sure it isn't the neighbours?

I got to say it seems the most likely explanation.
OAP's do smoke it. For recreational use or pain relief.

I wouldn't rule it out.

Maybe you can explain how you're so sure it's not them?

It will be the neighbours- you don't need to be a smoker to be using cannabis.

We had this. Large Victorian houses with shared chimneys- next door was 2 flats. 2 young men downstairs and a very respectable elderly couple in 80s upstairs (he had been Europe Head in a FTSE 100) . Constant smell in son's bedroom- blamed the young men. They moved out and the smell continued. Older couple moved out and it stopped. Another neighbour told me that it was rife down the bowls club.

Aye. You'd need something to take the edge off if you're playing bowls.

It's just definitely not my neighbours - we've lived next to them for nearly 20 years. I know them very well.

Rubber/ neoprene? We had a couple of wetsuits which smelled like this and drove me nuts until I worked it out.

I was going to say wetsuits! Not something most people have loitering in their hall but if you have anything like that it can smell very much like cannabis.

Andsoitbeganagain · 14/05/2026 20:06

I had this too! Drove me mad. Also hallway and stairs. Never did track it down.

GuelderRoses · 14/05/2026 20:16

@Clubtropicanasun Just had a thought - you don't happen to have a hawthorn in flower in your garden do you? Either by the door or outside the toilet window. Hawthorn flowers smell really quite peculiar close up.

Kpo58 · 14/05/2026 20:21

Do you have any new plastic non slip bath mats? Mine used to smell kind of like weed for some reason.

ShakyBake · 14/05/2026 21:15

I hate to address the elephant in the room op but, could your dh be a secret drug user?

Only I speak from experience of how it can be overlooked even if you think you know someone so well. An old neighbour of mine was married to a lovely man - highly thought of in the village and respected, military background. Unbeknownst to us he would regularly sit naked on their roof 'chasing the dragon'. Apparently he did this for 2 years without anyone noticing until one day he fell off and it all came out.

😁No, we've been together over 20 years and he doesn't like weed, never has.

Ok op that's a relief and I'll say no more.

Clubtropicanasun · 14/05/2026 21:42

I am going to look into drains and something under floorboards. I didn't smell it today downstairs but did it the upstairs bathroom. The only thing connecting all this is pipes/drains.

My dad used to bring real law that smelled exactly like cannabis- assume no beer in the hall?!

keepcrackingon · 14/05/2026 22:28

Same problem, also in the toilet and hallway. Turned out to be DH’s hair product, which he was applying in there before work! Some trendy hemp-based thing, smelled strongly weedy.

ClearlyNoIdea · 14/05/2026 23:07

OMG....we have this issue too. We are in a detached bungalow with no neighbours on top of us.

We mostly get the smell in the morning in the hallway. Sometimes I get it in my bathroom too. No carpets, no pets. no mould, no damp. It's really driving me mad. Place scrubbed to within an inch of it's life. I do have a plant in the hallway but it's not that.

user1471472819 · 14/05/2026 23:21

We had this exact problem for about two years on and off in our sitting room. Turned out shrews were getting in behind a built in unit and when we pulled it out discovered their droppings. Shrews are absolutely tiny and we never once heard them or had our dog react. We sealed up around some external pipes and I’m delighted to say that was over a year ago and nothing since. Honestly I was ready to sell the house! We were driven mad investigating and it was only discovered when we ripped out the units. We do live in the countyside but definitely something to consider.

Zigza · 14/05/2026 23:56

Shrews- we had this before and it ended up been a shrew nest in the wall- wooden framed house- the smell was from the wee…

😂.
Brilliant.

BeanMeUp · 15/05/2026 06:29

I have nothing useful to add, but my mother in law once knocked an entire box of loose hemp tea down the back of our living room radiator. Stank of weed for months every time the heating came on!

In my experience, unneutered tom cat urine can smell like weed 🤮

Mayim · 16/05/2026 21:58

This Happened to us, it was definitely someone smoking weed in a neighbouring house and the smell seemed to come through the wall where the houses join together.

DefiantRabbit9 · 16/05/2026 22:20

We've had this. Turns out it was neighbours two doors down. It could also be passers by. Weed stank travels like a MF. It triggers seizures in me and now I'm pregnant it triggers vomiting.

LatteLady · 16/05/2026 23:09

I recently bought some black salt… it came in an exotic bundle of condiments from TKMaxx… suddenly started smelling hard boiled eggs. Thought I had iffy drains, however recently I was trying to lift a tuna sandwich, lo and behold smell appeared as I ground the salt.

Do you have recently renovated floor boards because if your neighbours are attached it could be from them, floating through the cracks.

Rarelyout · 16/05/2026 23:16

This hasn’t been mentioned yet but you can get cannabis flavoured vapes.
That’s what the mystery smell in our house ended up being…
