The distinct smell of cannabis in places in our house...but it's not weed?

Clubtropicanasun · 14/05/2026 07:26

There are about 2 places in our house where we all get an overwhelming smell of weed! It's just bizarre. Downstairs hallway and toilet. It is definitely not cannabis and it's not neighbours either - terraced house but our neighbours are in their 70s and def not smokers.

Is there anything else that smells like weed that we should be exploring? Under floorboards etc. Thanks

It was mould in my downstairs coat cupboard which was my culprit. Everyone thought I was smoking weed on the sly as my coat stank of it!

LittleGreenDragons · 14/05/2026 10:33

If the hallway smell is nearer the front door then maybe fox wee. Otherwise I agree with pp it can be soil or damp underlay from spilling a drink. The carpet dries out quickly but the underlay doesn't.

The toilet upstairs could be the soil pipe being cracked at base, or do you mean the room in which case it might be the plughole from bath/sink.

We had that smell in an office at work and we were blaming all kinds of people for having a crafty smoke! The smell gradually turned to a vomit smell and it turned out to be a plant. It was dying and the roots had started to rot.

Undertheeaves · 14/05/2026 10:41

My parents have this in one of their spare bedrooms. Have never quite worked out what it is! I think it could be the carpet, which is reasonably new but coincides with it starting.

The carpet layer we used was smoking weed whilst he laid them!

We opened the packaging of the roll up the night before fitting and got a face full of the smell. The carpet fitter didn't smell of weed and we were home and saw him doing the fitting (and not smoking), so I'm pretty sure we can't blame him!

Having looked at the other comments I am wondering if it's the backing on the carpet

Twoshoesnewshoes · 14/05/2026 10:55

Yes, could be carpet, smelly trainers, cat pee - ours was also wetsuits! Camping bed rolls also smell of weed.

Bippertyboo2 · 14/05/2026 10:57

That's exactly what our conservatory smells like!!!!

comeundone · 14/05/2026 11:06

Grapefruit can also have this sort of smell... Once had grave concerns about a neighbour in their 90s which were greviously misplaced and my fruit bowl was the culprit.

Tcateh · 14/05/2026 11:14

Just commenting on carpet.
The top floor of a newly redone hotel I stayed in absolutely reeked of weed, it was the carpets.

Owly11 · 14/05/2026 14:33

Do you have teens/young adults living with you? If it definitely smells like weed then it probably is and someone is smoking it in the toilet or coming back home having smoked it and getting changed in the toilet.

Oncemorewithsome · 14/05/2026 14:36

Are you sure neighbours don’t have a relative who visits? That would be the most obvious reason.

Flintstonerubble · 14/05/2026 14:39

Just because your neighbours are in their 70’s and you believe them to be non smokers doesn’t rule them out from being recreational or medicinal weed smokers. It may be drifting in from their house .

QuintadosMalvados · 14/05/2026 14:57

Lager always smells of weed to me.
Not as crazy as it sounds given that it's made from plants.

I think that you must remember that weed has been around for a hell of a long time and that today's OAP's were yesterday's hippies!

Indeed there is an old people's flat complex that I frequently walk past and the smell coming from some of the flats is distinctly cannabis.

QuintadosMalvados · 14/05/2026 15:00

Forgot to say, on what I said above, it's probably your neighbours.

It seeps through walls. Honestly it does.

I think this is the most obvious answer.

Smoke Weed GIF

What makes you think it isnt your neighbours? Being in your 70s and older doesnt mean you cant be up for some fun!

Clubtropicanasun · 14/05/2026 15:02

Thanks everyone. Interesting reading! It's definitely not neighbours, or DCs. There's nothing in the hallway except shoe box and coats - I've gone through everything and none of it specifically smells. It could be something under the floorboards - no carpets. I don't know. Will have to keep checking

Yes! Lager smells like weed to me too. Also ,freshly ground coffee smells like weed in my opinion.

They could also be using it for pain relief.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 14/05/2026 15:04

Coffee machines that are not properly maintained and cleaned can smell like that. It's a common issue with Nespresso Machines in holiday cottages and can be pungent enough you can smell it upstairs.

They could

Or they could be having lock ins with their pals, listening to Snoop Dogg!

I know which story I prefer the idea of 🤭

My son’s football boots used to
smell a bit weedy

WestminsterSW1 · 14/05/2026 16:22

It will be the neighbours- you don't need to be a smoker to be using cannabis.

We had this. Large Victorian houses with shared chimneys- next door was 2 flats. 2 young men downstairs and a very respectable elderly couple in 80s upstairs (he had been Europe Head in a FTSE 100) . Constant smell in son's bedroom- blamed the young men. They moved out and the smell continued. Older couple moved out and it stopped. Another neighbour told me that it was rife down the bowls club.

GuelderRoses · 14/05/2026 16:25

Have you any rush or rattan mats or flooring anywhere? That smells very odd if it gets even slightly damp.

BoredandAnnoyed · 14/05/2026 16:28

Marigolds? We had some in the garden, and it was driving me mad where the weed smell came from. It was the smell of the marigolds outside drifting in.

mumumental · 14/05/2026 16:29

Cat spray?
