Labour has announced a new tax!

I know, I know, we’re all shocked.

In the King’s speech today. A new tourist tax that would be applied to overnight accommodation. It’s called the Overnight Visitor Levy Bill and could add around 5% onto hotel, B&B, guesthouse costs. They are pushing it through as we speak, I guess in time for summer.

Its great thing to do, tourists can bring many benefits, they also bring costs, like for us, the highest water charges in the UK.
Extra pressures on AE/GP services, road wear n tear, littering etc etc

Some people hate Labour, if this was a Tory policy, they'd all be arguing positively for it.

Why can't people just grow up and act in the interests of the country?

It’s a luxury to go on holiday now 🤦🏼‍♀️. Bloody hell. I thought mumsnet abhored race to the bottom politics. Air passenger duty has also increased for those who travel abroad.

Jet fuel is set to treble in price, maybe you also think Govt should subsidise air travel?

Going on Holiday has always been a luxury item....

5% is way too much…. Twats

Exactly! This will soon go up. I wonder if I am doing repairs at home and go to a hotel need to pay it in my own city?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 14/05/2026 07:28

This is hilarious. Honest to god what a time in history.

It's pretty much standard when you travel abroad.

And it makes sense to me as many touristy areas can really struggle.

Hopefully it will enable investment in those areas which will in turn attract more tourism

GoodkneeBadKnee · 14/05/2026 07:32

Brilliant idea. And much needed, especially in London.

Is that because this thread didn’t go the way you hoped?

It’s about £2 a night.

I’ve just booked a 4 night stay in Rome and I will have to pay £37 in local taxes when I get to the hotel. It’s fair enough.

It's easy to say it's not much relative to a trip to Rome.
But for those if us who camp or do cheap UKcaravan holidays because that's all we can afford, it's a significant percentage increase on the trip.

I've not looked at it in detail. Does it apply to all forms of accommodation? And what about the campervans that do plague us? Yet more costs for proper sites so they'll all park in the passing places on single track roads instead.

User1998776 · 14/05/2026 07:55

I paid "tourist tax" last year in rome. This year in venice. I believe I paid it in Spain a few years ago...
Egypt last year I paid to enter the country (paid for the visa)
Liverpool charge it here.

Maybe think a little more carefully about the “Labour are terrible-don’t vote for them” threads you start. Heaven knows there are a few open goals available to you!

Did you read the article? It literally lists in a table all the new taxes Labour has introduced since they came to power,

Yes and most of them aren’t new taxes, which is the point I was replying to.

The biggest impact is the freezing of thresholds, which is something the Tories did too.

Ha ha they do that now.

Will be up to councils if and how much they decide to charge for camping... but of course they should charge, you use the facilities paid for by council tax payers after all.

CurlewKate · 14/05/2026 07:58

“We want better public services!! Heavens no, we don’t want to PAY for them!!!Perish the thought!”

InterestingDuck · 14/05/2026 08:00

From what I can see it only applies to mayoral authorities, which excludes some tourist areas.

Firetreev · 14/05/2026 08:02

DrRylandGrace · 14/05/2026 06:33

How can there be people this clueless? Especially when @PinoirNothad already provided a list of several of them.

From the tax payers alliance. AKA a think tank that represents the interests of billionaires pretending to represent the average man on the street. A lot of these 'tax rises' are are tweaks and inconsequential to most. And no, I don't give a hoot about VAT on private school fees. Private education is a luxury, so pay your bloody tax tax on it. I'm hardly going to start hopping up and down about taxes applied to vapes or freezing of thresholds.

The country is bankrupt and people need to grow up. Nothing, and I repeat NOTHING in this country is going to improve without us reducing the deficit, reducing borrowing costs and increasing government budgets. Grown up countries like the Scandis realise this. If you want excellent services you need to pay for them. Also if you vote Reform, we're only going to get poorer. Borrowing costs and interest rates will rise as we'll be seen as a basket case of a country.

I’m sure it’s all very worthy and I’m sure we can all argue how local tourist areas have the right to tax holiday makers etc, however all I see is the Labour government implementing ANOTHER tax. It’s literally all they have done since they came in.

Edited

Well no, it isn’t ‘literally all they have done’.

There are things like scrapping the two child cap (lifting many out of poverty) , invested in renewable energy, got boat arrivals down by a third this year, net migration down two-thirds, re-established the Erasmus scheme for our young people, free breakfast clubs, new youth centres, new apprenticeships, NHS waiting lists down and lower than for years and years … and a lot more.

But hey, you’ve got your finger in the political pulse and spotted this ruinous impact on our family budgets….

hattie43 · 14/05/2026 08:18

I’ve just been to Japan and they have tourist tax and I’m sure other places do to . What I hate about Labour is that they have no ideas for growth and the only way they raise money is by taxing people more and more .

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 14/05/2026 08:33

Why does this bother you so much? I can’t remember the last country I visited that didn’t add ‘local tax’ to my hotel bill! It’s pretty standard I think 🤷‍♀️

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2026 08:42

@hattie43 could you explain to me the amazing things the Tory’s did for growth? I’ve got a business and I’m not seeing it and I our case bought in Brexit which was completely anti growth - and quite the opposite!!!

Because everytime I get my head straight re. finances, everything goes up again. I’m so tired of having less and less money.

SourdoughSally · 14/05/2026 09:00

It's fair enough. If you can afford holiday accommodation then 5% is bugger all.

Taxing necessities is what they shouldn't do, eg food

Crikeyalmighty · 14/05/2026 09:01

I seriously think we have reached propaganda central with these kinds of posts - It’s clear Farage and co are pumping out utter bull and people just believe it - most of these taxes aren’t new, or are a bit niche affecting few people- freezing allowances isn’t new, the Tory’s did it- do you know we have one if the highest tax free allowances in Europe, close to the top! I love people quoting the tax payers alliance like it’s some charity - it’s a right wing think tank basically of people who don’t want to pay any!!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 14/05/2026 09:02

I couldn’t give a shit about Farage. He’s a hateful, odious twat. The fact that you just assume that anyone who is fucking sick of having less and less money each month is a far right extremist says far more about you than it does the poster.
