I think Wes Streeting is the fresh direction Labour needs now

Name changed because we are at a pivotal point in our lifetimes, and my focus now needs to be on this.

I do think Starmer is a decent man, but Labour risks being wiped out entirely if he stays in charge. I see this in my own family and community.

We need a change of direction and a fresh face who can actually connect and get things done. For me, and I feel for those around me, that person is Wes Streeting.

He’s done a solid job as Health Secretary in tough circumstances. He’s pragmatic, articulate and not afraid of reform where it’s needed (which is exactly what the NHS requires). He comes from a genuine working-class background - council estate and free school meals - so he understands real life in a way some career politicians don’t. He can talk about aspiration, responsibility and actually winning elections in a way most career politicians simply cannot.

And yes, I’ll say it - the fact that he’s an openly gay man is a massive positive. It shows progress and that someone can reach the top on merit while being open about who they are. Representation matters!

Wes feels like the candidate who could actually win the next election and deliver.

I would love to see Mumsnet unite behind Wes - who I think would make a fantastic Prime Minister.

The fact that Streeting is even a serious contender merely shows how incredibly shallow Labour's pool of "talent" really is.

I don't consider Burnham to be much of an improvement either. He gave up a Westminster seat at a time when he should have hung on to it for dear life. Hardly indicates a shrewd political operator.

I said Streeting for PM and Miliband as chancellor weeks ago.

Thing is some of them are not too bad. Starmer has done a good job internationally, Wes a fair job, Mahmood and Cooper goodish too.
It is that Reeves woman who has messed it all up for Starmer. Had he been smarter he would have put Streeting as Chancellor from the get go, even if it meant that Streeting would have eventually taken his job. The fact Starmer has put dead beats around him Reeves/Lammy etc shows he is not a strong leader. A strong leader is not threatened by someone strong by their side.

Exactly this

You don't think having an LGBT Prime Minister would be something to be proud of? Something to show the far right that we are fighting back?

And let's look at what he's done as Health Secretary:

  • Negotiated a deal to end junior doctors’ strikes shortly after taking office
  • Oversaw recruitment of 8,500 extra mental health workers in the NHS
  • And, best of all, reduced waiting lists and increased appointments.

I'll be honest - Labour have been very disappointing in government so far. But with one exception:

Wes Streeting.

What, a lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans PM?

Talk about confused dot com.

He was part of a group that doxxed and hounded women out of the Labour Party for knowing that women are a seperate thing from men.

He is not to be trusted.

Absolutely not. He agreed to a public inquiry which is going to cost the organisation I work for millions of pounds that will be diverted away from patient care despite the fact that investigations have taken place at all levels and conclusions reached. Those conclusions won't change - money definitely not well spent.

Just a voter who cares about stability - and we're not seeing much of that at the moment

Well that's a brilliant reason for keeping Starmer then!

Sadcafe · 12/05/2026 11:14

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 09:51

For those who don't want Wes to be PM - who do you want then?

Starmer, but if he goes, Rachel Reeves or Bridget Phillipson

Good god OP dont you have a job? Or a hobby? Why does this NEED to be your focus.

The Department of Health is currently in utter chaos with the 10 year transformation plan which appears to be the rehashing of failed policies of yesteryear. Meanwhile staffing levels are being stripped to shreds and the civil servants trying to keep the thing on the rails have moral plummeting.

And you've decided to write a song about this chap on the basis he is charismatic in your opinion.

I think it calls for a mumsnet classic: give your head a wobble.

Oncemorewithsome · 12/05/2026 11:15

You might as well vote Tory as Wes Streeting. They would lose my vote.

MrThorpeHazell · 12/05/2026 11:16

I do wonder if the OP is his Mum or his Press Secretary.

To misquote an old Tory election slogan: "If Streeting's the answer it must have been a bloody stupid question."

EdgeofaRevolution · 12/05/2026 11:17

Oh come on, vote for the guy because he’s gay? How ridiculous.

can you imagine the frothing if it were suggested that a straight man is the prime candidate based on his sexuality?

you sound like a fucking loony frankly!

whywonthelisten · 12/05/2026 11:24

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 08:49

He seems a very decent man to me

Have you read his book? It's quite good.

Out of the candidates available, he's got my vote FWIW.

Benjithedog · 12/05/2026 11:24

itwasyourshowallalong · 12/05/2026 09:54

Andy Burnham
Yvette Cooper
Angela Rayner
Emily Thornberry
Ed Miliband

These are my top 5 preferences - in that order

Has Angela Rayner paid back the £40000 I tax yet?

Sadcafe · 12/05/2026 11:14

Starmer, but if he goes, Rachel Reeves or Bridget Phillipson

I'd compromise on this!

Not ideal - but I do like both of them.

And Labour would finally have appointed a woman as leader.

Wes get off MN. I'm sure you have other things to do this morning.

It would genuinely be inspirational and show young LGBTQIA+ people that they can achieve great things.

Calling for a straight PM is not the same - that's like one of those Straight Pride rallies for the far right.

It doesn't look like Starmer has any power left.

Apparently when Liz Truss was Prime Minister, the UK's 10 year bond yield was 4.7%, and that was the main reason why she had to go. This was an economic disaster caused by political instability.

The UK's 10 year bond yield has just gone above that today - in fact it's hit 5%.

The country needs stability right now.

I don't think you'll get that any other candidate offers the stability that Wes does - plus he has some charisma.

What stability does Wes offer?

I used to be a massive Streeting fan-but I think he has shown himself to be more about his political career than the Party or the country. I agree his background should be a bonus, but it obviously isn’t-Starmer, Rayner and Lammy, for example, also have genuine working class backgrounds, but the electorate don’t rate them. They generally prefer a toff!

It’s identity politics that got Labour into the mess they’re in. There are plenty of people in those categories representing those categories. It’s not 1981 anymore.

Myoldbear · 12/05/2026 11:35

FlyingApple · 12/05/2026 09:14

You must be taking the piss. If you're not then I am truly baffled. He's better because he's LGBT? You want David Lammy to be pm?

I'm beginning to think you're right.
OP is having a joke.

CurlewKate · 12/05/2026 11:39

Oh, and the being gay thing is completely irrelevant. There are plenty of openly gay MPs. Which is obviously a good thing, but not a reason for preferment.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/05/2026 11:41

Well, he always looks lovely and smart, trussed up in his jacket and tie, obviously hasn't had the memo that it's off with jacket, no tie and roll up sleeves to look like his good leader who tries in vain to look working class as seen at the podium yesterday.

Love the song, OP

He stabilised the NHS

OP posts:
bluebelle1983 · 12/05/2026 11:47

what has he actually done for the NHS? It’s all just word salad and empty promises. Spending thousands of pounds on engaging academics to look at ‘neighbourhood’ health projects which no-one who actually works in healthcare understands and for which there is no money to implement anyway is not what I call an efficient use of public money.

DilettanteRedRagger · 12/05/2026 11:49

hairbearbunches · 12/05/2026 09:21

Absolute bollocks. This is straight from Wes Streeting HQ.

McSweeney & Mandelson had a plan and their plan was Wes. Starmer was only in place to allow them to smash the left, he wasn’t supppsed to win the last election but his role being a placeholder would have been executed, he would then resign leaving the road clear for Wes in 2029.

Wes Streeting is bought and paid for by US private health, Mandelson’s fingerprints are all over him. I would not trust Wes Streeting as far as I could throw him. And if the Labour members seriously think he is their best hope,…hello Mr Farage welcome to No.10.

If Labour get rid of Starmer for Streeting, they are done.

You’re 100% correct, and some people (OP????) aren’t following the logic on this.

Sure, Wes Streeting for PM - if and only if you’re financially prepared for fully privatized healthcare. And trust me, you’re not. Ambulances costing £1000 per call??? People not calling 999 because it would leave their families in debt and they’d rather die alone??? Welcome to the Currently-United-States of the UK, if that’s what you support. The “states” won’t be united much longer (may not be anyway) because Scotland and Wales should never, EVER accept a private healthcare mandate from their rich Southern (or Western) neighbour. We’re safer here due to the partial (could be made “full”) devolution of NHS Scotland, but Wales is absolutely fucked.

a fresh face who can actually connect and get things done

Fucking crying with laughter at this description, OP. Wes Streeting - proof that having a baby face doesn’t mean you’re not an evil bastard. I hope you don’t choose people for anything this way!

Also yes to this being from Streeting headquarters. If you’re so certain about him @WesStreetingForPM , why’d you name change, hen? Share all your previous usernames and we’ll have an honest discussion based on shared data. 😂
