I think Wes Streeting is the fresh direction Labour needs now

Name changed because we are at a pivotal point in our lifetimes, and my focus now needs to be on this.

I do think Starmer is a decent man, but Labour risks being wiped out entirely if he stays in charge. I see this in my own family and community.

We need a change of direction and a fresh face who can actually connect and get things done. For me, and I feel for those around me, that person is Wes Streeting.

He’s done a solid job as Health Secretary in tough circumstances. He’s pragmatic, articulate and not afraid of reform where it’s needed (which is exactly what the NHS requires). He comes from a genuine working-class background - council estate and free school meals - so he understands real life in a way some career politicians don’t. He can talk about aspiration, responsibility and actually winning elections in a way most career politicians simply cannot.

And yes, I’ll say it - the fact that he’s an openly gay man is a massive positive. It shows progress and that someone can reach the top on merit while being open about who they are. Representation matters!

Wes feels like the candidate who could actually win the next election and deliver.

I would love to see Mumsnet unite behind Wes - who I think would make a fantastic Prime Minister.

I don’t like his stance on trans gender children.

Do you mean not giving children puberty blockers?

Exactly. I’m pretty disgusted the OP (who obviously works for Wes) coming onto Netmums canvassing for support for him coming out with so many lies about his so called successes.

I do not work for Wes!

I've never even met him.

It is possible to think a decent man would be a decent leader without being paid by him.

Hi Wes 👋.

my question is - what is We Streeting supposed to be able to do that’s any better? He will still have the same obstructive back bench and the same shitty economic climate and the same nutcases abroad to deal with as Kier Starmer. Anyone expecting a miracles is completely deluded.

plus ça change.

Starmer has tried the toolmaker line but nobody bought it.

Wes is a gay man who grew up in a council house.

People will buy that.

I'm one of them.

You must be taking the piss. If you're not then I am truly baffled. He's better because he's LGBT? You want David Lammy to be pm?

David Lammy is deputy PM at the moment

See, I knew you hadn’t met him!

No sane person who has met WS would want him to lead their country.

Streeting is an utter cuntweasel who has fucked the NHS so badly that it’s putting us back 20 years in terms of safety

Oh! And waiting lists ARE NOT coming down - patients are just being discharged and sent back to GPs

I am praying he doesn’t get in, he’s an absolute disaster

Faceblocks · 12/05/2026 09:49

I’d rather Wes than someone in the unions back pockets. But I do wonder if his friendship with Mandelson might come and bite him in the arse at some point. To be fair most of the Labour top team are shit.

MellowFinch · 12/05/2026 09:50

Labour doing what Labour do - infighting, personal ambition etc. Always the same. Also, WS is not electable.

Stoicandhappy · 12/05/2026 09:50

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 09:47

Why?

My explanation would probably get deleted. Let’s just say he displays some very unpleasant personality traits.

hairbearbunches · 12/05/2026 09:50

Growing up gay in a council house doesn’t make him special, although he seems to think so having written his memoirs before he turned 40. He’s a self serving, nest feathering ‘him, then party, then country’ worst kind of politician . And Mandelson pulls his strings.

theyre not going to make someone PM who came within 500 votes of being unseated st tge last election. People despise him.

FlatErica · 12/05/2026 09:51

He’s not helping the NHS. He’s awful!

I think they should keep Keir, get Burnham back into Parliament and swap him in as PM a year before the next General Election. Starmer is doing a good job but the public appear to need someone with more charisma

Rictasmorticia · 12/05/2026 09:53

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 08:33

What don't you like about it?

He's had to follow the law but has shown support in the past.

itwasyourshowallalong · 12/05/2026 09:54

Andy Burnham
Yvette Cooper
Angela Rayner
Emily Thornberry
Ed Miliband

These are my top 5 preferences - in that order

Agreed. A new PM can’t change the global situation, a leadership battle will destabilise us domestically and we’ll achieve absolutely nothing.

It’s from the GLP, so I cropped off their logo from the bottom Hmm

OP, why not just vote Tory? KS’s Labour are pretty much there.

CuriousKangaroo · 12/05/2026 09:57

Nope. The Labour MPs should have come together after the local election losses, not immediately turned to ousting the leader. The country needs no more destabilising factional infighting. We had enough of that under the Tories. And as I mentioned on a different thread yesterday, for all his faults, Keir is doing a good job on international matters. The world is on fire and I’d rather have a boring but clever and steady PM dealing with it, than a man ready to jump at the chance to promote himself and his career, rather than putting the country first.

Freysimo · 12/05/2026 09:57

I'm not a Labour voter but I like Wes. I think he would have initiated NHS reform if he'd been allowed, however, you lost me at Lammy for PM. The Labour front bench is pretty uninspiring when you think of the talent Blair had in his Cabinet.

AmberSpy · 12/05/2026 09:59

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 09:51

For those who don't want Wes to be PM - who do you want then?

I want KS to finish his mandate. I want his cabinet to do their jobs, for which they are paid handsome salaries which are funded by my taxes, rather than endlessly seeking to advance their own careers. I want Andy Burnham to fuck off and finish his term in Manchester instead of circling Westminster like some demented vulture.

I do not want this cycle of leadership coups, plotting, long-running internal elections, speculation, media savagery etc to continue. It makes the country ungovernable. We cannot keep switching PMs every couple of years. Every time we do we lose months of precious time where things could actually get done to this bullshit.

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 09:51

For those who don't want Wes to be PM - who do you want then?

I mean we ain't looking at an amazing crop of candidates but of the likely ones, I think Ed Miliband would be a good centrist pick. Angela Rayner is alright but the HMRC issue is going to haunt her and sometimes she goes off script.

I would like Andy Burnham if he got back in parliament but quite selfishly he's a good mayor so I wouldn't like to lose him in that role. I think him being blocked at the by-election was a massive misstep

luckylavender · 12/05/2026 09:59

Weasel of a man. Failing the NHS. Still strikes. And Mandelson’s protégée
