Do you lime

I know this is quite 80s and perhaps a thing of the past, but I'm in a private rental and the kitchen cupboards are all lined with lino. I initially thought it was a bit odd, but it's all cut really well so not in any way bothersome. I took it up to check as I'm moving soon and underneath is perfect, the kitchen is probably 25+ years. I'm thinking ahead to when I moved, it's a new build so a new kitchen and would like to line the cupboards with something to protect them. Any ideas? I don't want to use lino as I assume it's difficult to cut.

My phone has changed thread title without me realising, obviously it was meant to be do you line kitchen cupboards. I'm hoping odd title will attract more traffic though!

Growing up, my mother and her cronies lined all their kitchen cupboards (Scotland)
When I got married she told me I'd have to do this. I bought several rolls of greaseproof paper and took ages doinv it.

My English iLs thought I was mad as none of them had ever done it.

AgnesMcDoo · 11/05/2026 16:40

My grans used to do this (Scottish) but my mum didn’t and I haven’t.

it’s quite sensible actually now that I think about it

My kitchen cupboards are lined with oil cloth..easy to wipe off. I'm English,I bought a fabulous kitchen craft cupboard, from a lady probably in her 40s all Painted and spruced up and lined with oil cloth.

DoYouLikeYourNaneFred · 11/05/2026 16:57

Nope, in modern cupboards it's just not necessary (IMO), the shelves are designed to be easy to wipe.

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2026 16:58

Well I did indeed think this was going to be a thread about adding lime to things 😂 and as I really like lime I was hoping to find out what others might add lime to that I’ve been missing out on.

I don’t line my cupboards though, no.

Yes easy to wipe, but I've found in the past that spices and certain items can stain the cupboards or leave 'rings' where old tins have been sitting.

I don’t line the inside but I do put newspaper on top of the high cupboards after too many horrors after moving into new houses!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/05/2026 17:14

I like the idea of pretty oil cloth in the big drawers though

MouldyCandy · 11/05/2026 17:18

I've lined my kitchen cupboards with the dotty clear shelf liner stuff you get from IKEA. It definitely helps with tins etc not scratching the surface.

I also put lime in my guacamole and a wedge in my lager!

“Liming” is an expression for hanging out in St Lucia so I was hoping for a thread about chilling out in the Caribbean… but I do line my bedroom cupboards, not the kitchen though. That would make more sense as they are more likely to get sticky…

🤣🤣 me too, it’s the same term used in Trinidad. Oh I LIMED!!

ClayPotaLot · 11/05/2026 17:27

I use kitchen shelf liner I buy off amazon. It's just a nonslip flexible plastic. Good on glass shelves in the fridge too.

Davros · 11/05/2026 17:28

I thought it was going to be about using Lime Bikes. I’ve never lined a cupboard btw

lavenderscenteddrawerliners · 11/05/2026 18:48

I love the idea that this could have been about the Caribbean. Apologies for putting a dampener on things 🍋 (not technically a lime, I know). @ClayPotaLot by any chance could you put a link for that please? I want to have good intentions to keep the new fridge clean.

My mum used to do this, we were quite hard-up though so she’d use free wallpaper samples from B&Q

Zanatdy · 11/05/2026 20:21

My mum and Nanna used to line the drawers and cupboards with cheap wallpaper. No I definitely don’t do this.

BIWI · 11/05/2026 20:23

I also thought this was going to be about Caribbean rum drinking!

Jellybean23 · 11/05/2026 20:25

I line mine with baking paper or greaseproof paper on a roll. Not every shelf, just the 'messy' ones - where the oils and sauces live.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 11/05/2026 20:30

Yes I do. You can buy offcuts of Lino online and it cuts easily with scissors. If anything spills or stains it’s so easy to chuck and replace. My kitchen is an old farmhouse kitchen so all the interior shelves are wood and not so easy to clean unless lined

pizzaHeart · 11/05/2026 20:32

I just wipe them with dettol wipes from time to time, it helps me to keep an eye on stock and best before dates as well.

B0D · 11/05/2026 20:33

I think we had cupboards lined with greaseproof in my childhood (a long time ago).
Some shelves and bases in my budget council installed cupboards are very damaged especially where pans are stored. I like the idea of Lino or cork tiles inside. Would it need to be stuck down though?

I thought it was an odd way of asking if people use Lime bikes!
