What is something you know because of your job, that would surprise others? (My example is gross, thread warning!)

It can be anything!!

I will start..

I am a food safety inspector (local authority) and have been for over 15 years, working in two large cities, and my current job in a smaller local authority. The same theme...

Food handlers do NOT wash their hands properly after using the toilet / before preparing your food.. lack of antibacterial soap in a toilet cubicle or in a kitchen is common place.... even when I am there, hands are not washed, it is an absolute bug bear of mine.

Preparing with raw meat then handling food ready to eat.. not uncommon

Handling cash / touching screens then handling food.. not uncommon.

Yes it does put me off eating outside of my house unfortunately 🙃

I have come across a LOT worse but this example irritates me.

Your turn!!!!!

Unfortunately it's no longer broadcasted due to the huge problems in the country, but the BBC World Service programme Afghan Women's Hour regularly achieved audiences of 11 million plus, including up to 39% male listeners. In comparison, Wogan's morning show at the same time only hit a maximum of 8 million.

@Feis123 , of course there's no 'special pool' of doctors in private hospitals. Usually the doctors work in both private and NHS settings on different days. I thought everyone knew that.

Yes, but since private hospitals (as I knew it) are free to recruit from anywhere - so I thought that they would be recruiting creme de la creme, top doctors in their field - like top Egyptian cardiologists, etc. Secondly, I did not know that it was a physio day off that would determine a bad outcome for post-op patients. That is an eye-opener.

This is what I found out, and paid for it through the nose. 'But our chemistry teacher has a PhD in chemistry!' - yet he can't teach!!!!! So you have to pay for the school, then get gaslighted by the school - our teachers are best, they have PhDs - then realise they are lying and pay for the tutor, basically, the biggest scam. I feel so stupid after all this - I was taught at university that profit only seeks profit, that the idea of a private business is to charge as much as possible yet to give as little as possible, and still I bought into this stupid dream.

Sorry to hear that @Feis123. I hope you found a suitable education for your DC in the end. It must be frustrating to feel that you wasted money on it 😕

I used to work for a well known British high street shop. They had absolutely zero stock control until well into the 2010s.

dayswithaY · 11/05/2026 15:10

As a teenager I worked at a dry cleaners. You would not believe the variety of bodily fluids covering the items people hand over. You know it’s bad when it’s presented to you in a sealed bag.

I visit lots of houses in my current role. I would say 80% of them are dirty and untidy, regardless of how big/small the property is. Also, most people don’t make their beds or empty their bins very often, just an observation.

Waitingfordoggo · 11/05/2026 15:10

Same in schools @Pamnn82. They usually get half a day to a day’s notice. So it’s enough time to make sure all staff are going to be in and to tell the children to be on their best behaviour 😬😂 But not enough time to reverse or cover up practices/systems which aren’t as they should be.

That a high proportion of men who rape are or have been police officers, prison officers or soldiers.

This does not surprise me at all. These professions attract a certain type, unfortunately.

Id imagine you COULD name them without fear of national scandal or the DM picking up the story 😉

Yup.
If it goes hard over time, it is a cake. If it goes soft, it is a biscuit.

Are we still talking about Jaffa cakes? 😳

I've done many jobs over the years, including as a cleaner for a well-known department store here in England. I did multiple exhaustive shifts, early mornings, mornings, days, evenings, nights and early hours and was treated like filth by one particular manager.

Nobody liked her apart from the arse lickers, she was up her own bum, strided around in high heels, tight skirt with a split up the back, light tops and braless. Snooty nose in the air.

I cleaned the entire store from top to bottom, all the sales floors, bakery, behind the tills, men's and women's changing rooms, public loos, the food hall, cafe, staff quarters, and offices, public and staff lifts, and also the staff canteen. There should have been me and another 4 on, but all the other 4 had again made excuses why they ''couldn't'' come in, so I was again left to do it all by myself.

One day, Miss-I-Really-Fancy-Myself gave me yet another bollocking, saying I wasn't fast enough, not doing a good enough job, blah blah. I told her I'm the only one on duty as the others couldn't be arsed to arrive again, I was utterly knackered, but doing what I could as fast as possible. She hated that I'd take a well-needed break in the staff canteen when I finished, as the canteen wasn't for ''commoners'' like cleaners.

She was bollock bollock bollock.

The next day, I was in her office just after 4 am, cleaning it and had various cleaning fluids, so I used the cleaners I'd use for the loos for her office, I sprayed and wiped absolutely everything with loo cleaner and sprayed some in the pockets of the jacket she always left hanging over her chair. The jacket cost over £1,000!

I left shortly after because of being treated like shit non-stop by her and others.

That a lot of the decision making around healthcare during Covid was ad hoc and panic-based rather than based on any data or scientific reasoning. I know this because I was involved in some of that decision making when I absolutely should not have been. I then had friends telling me that certain decisions were right and for the best and I couldn't tell them the truth, which drove me nuts.

When men come for an ultrasound of their testicles we get them to hold their penis up out the way. 99% of them then walk out the room without washing their hands.

Yes, I do clean the door handles.

To be fair, the penis is no more likely to be particularly dirty than any other body part, and probably a damn sight cleaner than the hands they’re holding it with…

Whyarepeople · 11/05/2026 15:15

Oh and a lot of the covid messaging was outright lies. I think a lot of people know that now, but maybe don't realise how blatant it was.

Rosecoffeecup · 11/05/2026 15:16

The amount of manual processing done in banks. Complex processes run from a spreadsheet created by someone who left donkeys years ago, instructions written on the back of a fag packet. Nothing will surprise you when theres reports of systems going down at any of the high street banks once you see how the sausage is made

I temped with a coffee machine company (the massive ones used in cafés etc).
Most coffee shops will wipe the spouts with a (often dirty) cloth, but most of them don't know how to clean the inside, and then wonder where the sour milk smell is coming from.

(I've seen maggots inside machines sent back for repair or servicing ).
🤮

I ran a coffee shop for a mid scale company (growing now) and we had to deconstruct our milk wands twice a day for a full clean! I gip when I see some of the big brands wiping the nipples with grubby cloths.

Years ago, and probably not allowed now, I had a friend who worked in a butchers and said they mix fresh heart in with the loose sold mince so it stays that beautiful rich red on the display tray.

That’s a bonus surely?!

Corvidsarethebest · 11/05/2026 15:24

I worked as a waitress and barmaid for years going through university.

I don't know how it didn't put me off eating out. Strangely I just don't care, although I very very rarely complain and if I did, I would not return the food, let them heat it and then accept it back (too much risk of them deliberately spitting in it!)

Bored, behind the scenes people take their revenge.

Because I paid for this scam.

I have learned over the years, both as a pupil and as a teacher, that the quality of degree does not directly correlate to the ability to actually teach a subject in whatever type of school. Quite often the one with a plethora of degrees in their subject is less able to teach it because they cannot fathom that someone doesn't find it as easy as they did.

I stopped eating out years ago as a result of getting very very ill after a steak and salad.

I worked for a well known ice cream company and they were excellent regarding hygiene. It was not possible to go to the loo or anywhere else without walking past the hygiene station and there were cameras everywhere. If you walked past and went into the production floor, it was a sackable offence no matter where else you had been in the factory.

I would eat out again if I knew this level of hygiene was the norm.

Believe it or not, McDonald’s has IMMENSELY strict hygiene & cleanliness levels just like how you describe. Every night the entire kitchen is stripped down to its component pieces and scrubbed. Special little brushes used for each piece. During your shift, alarms go off every 10 minutes to remind you to wash your hands. It’s well known in the industry for having almost OCD levels of cleanliness. I remember my boss when I worked there at 15, saying “It’s because it ensures that the Big Mac tastes the same whichever McDonalds you go to”

Angelabdc · 11/05/2026 15:27

I worked for the police for many years managing the stuff taken by Officers during investigations. Huge quantities of drugs, weapons, blood stained clothing, computing equipment with illegal and indecent material, DNA samples, car parts, etc. These items have to be catalogued and held securely until after any trial (which applies to maybe 5% of what is seized) and then needs to be disposed of securely. Its a completely invisible job which costs vast sums to manage. You won't be surprised to know it's not resourced properly. I feel many trials would collapse if they knew how cavalierly evidence was handled.

Yes! I went to private primary school and apparently half the teachers weren't qualified teachers. After I left the new head teacher a few years later was not a qualified teacher but she had bought the school and appointed herself!

I was surprised to hear this is still going on. A guy I work with (solicitor in a law firm but has a degree in theology from Oxford) taught RE in a private school for a couple of years after uni. No teacher training/experience but knew his subject and was clever with a posh voice so ...
