Hi all, DD wants to do a daytrip in a day post GCSEs, preferably to Venice. Is this 'a thing'? I hear it is... love to hear your thoughts

I’ve done quite a few EDTs.
The water bus goes directly from the airport so is one of the easiest cities to do in a day.
Best if you live close to Stansted or Luton.
The EDT app shows flight bargains and the FB group is really active and helpful.

I would actually love to do this! We went to Venice and getting the water taxi from the airport was one of the best things I've ever done. You can easily pick up the normal boat bus back. We hadn't booked anything so couldn't go into any of the famous buildings but that didn't matter at all. We loved walking around, travelling on the boat bus and eating some lovely food. I think it would be great to do in a day as long as the plane didn't get delayed or anything.

HollyhockDays · 10/05/2026 13:46

The best way in for wow factor is via a water transfer. Venice is tiny so it’s easy just to wander about but a few things eg the palace / tower etc you need to book.

@titchy I thought we were the grown ups here? Bad language! If I want to indulge in a silly Tiktok trend that's my business mate!! Just asking for some tips on here for a FUN trip

Ryanair, Wednesday 24 June - London standsted to Venice, 6am, £46.32. Return 23.25 £27.29

Do it! (But maybe stay the night before near the airport)

takingcareofme2023 · 10/05/2026 14:08

Short break in Verona, worth seeing in its own right, then train to Venice for the day. Vaporetto from outside station along Grand Canal to St Mark's Square, a lovely wander, then amble back to station and Verona. Did this recently and loved it. Too old for extreme days!!

Timetakesacigarette · 10/05/2026 14:17

We should also all be thinking of how these ‘trends’ affect the environment. Thought Gen Z were very mindful of this so I’m suprised it’s a thing.

Yes, it's a thing - are you on Facebook at all? There's whole groups for this kind of thing.
EDT (Extreme Day Trips)
Go for it, they look great fun.

That’s what I’d do and have done.

Yes! Extreme day trips are a thing. You leave early morning and head back late at night.

Seymour45 · 10/05/2026 14:51

OK great will have a look at extreme day trips on Facebook thanks x

Have literally just got back from Venice where I go for work quite often - I got a 7am flight and made it into Venice for midday. In terms of itinerary, the bus from the airport is quickest, but the Alilaguna is most aesthetically appealing - and takes you straight to San Marco (or wherever else you want to go) and you buy a ticket at the airport and there are signs everywhere as to how to get to it. If you want to go into the Basilica of San Marco you have to book several days in advance (the Byzantine mosaics are pretty amazing!) You can wander around - it’s all really pretty - cross the Grand Canal via the Rialto bridge (or at least look at it!) and see the food market on the other side if that interests you, then wander in the direction of the Frari (another really beautiful church with two Titians - you don’t have to book) and continue down to the Basilica Della Salute - this side of Venice is much less touristy incidentally, and I love it, and then back to San Marco via the Accademia bridge. It’s the Art Biennale at the moment so if you like art there are lots of really excellent exhibitions on right now - I particularly recommend Michael Armitage at Palazzo Grassi (also the building is beautiful.) If you like interiors, and want to see inside a Palazzo that is more of a house museum, the Palazzo Fortuny is great.

Puffykins · 10/05/2026 15:10

Also - the art in the Accademia is exquisite.

BeaPerry · 10/05/2026 15:13

I don’t know if it’s a Tik tok thing, but extreme day trips are definitely a thing !
you shop about for a cheap flight,
pick a destination that has airport near where u want to go -
no luggage just a small bag,
late flight back -
it’s a long day and good fun !

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 10/05/2026 15:17

I stayed in a cheap and cheerful apartment I found on Air BnB when I extended my work trip once.

I got the water bus from the airport which was magical. Don't eat in the tourist traps- go one canal back and it's cheaper and better food

I love Venice, it deserves at least 2 days.

asdbaybeeee · 10/05/2026 15:20

Get the earliest flight you can. Do a private water taxi from airport that can drop you close to st marks. Do st marks - there’s the bridge of sighs, bell tower and the church if you fancy it. Then walk away from st marks (v expensive) and find a nice restaurant for lunch on the canal. Then just walk around in the afternoon and take it all in. Buy a souvenir and have delicious ice cream or coffee.

We did 3 days in Venice -
day 1 st marks and Rialto bridge
day 2 a glass museum (fine but very pushy for sales)
day 3 a food tour (brilliant but can do the same yourself walking round)
minus the glass museum it’s easy to fit into a day as long as you don’t mind the rush of travelling twice in one day.

PJ98 · 10/05/2026 15:21

Venice looks like it's quick to fly to.

It's actually flying in, then getting a water bus/taxi into actual Venice.

I would probably do 2 days. Not a silly extreme day trip where you spend most of it travelling.

user1492757084 · 10/05/2026 15:24

I would enter via train and then water taxi.
Two nights.
Look into camping.
Purchase tickets to popular tourist spots before hand, if possible, via travel agent.

mindutopia · 10/05/2026 15:24

Extreme day trips are a thing, but no way I’d do one to Venice. Go for a long weekend.

It’s probably a roughly 3 hour flight, 2 hours and a bit but factoring in likely delays. The water taxis from the airport take about 40 minutes each way, but you do have to wait a bit, so say, an hour. That’s 8 hours of travel already.

And then you end up being there in the worst part of the day. In the summer, it is HOT! Like very hot. Like Paris in August hot. You miss the most magical bits, which is early mornings and evening.

If she wants to do it, Amsterdam or Paris would be a better choice. Flights to Venice are usually once a day from most airports so she won’t have a choice of an early morning flight out and evening return. The plane most likely turns right around and comes back.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/05/2026 15:28

There is a Facebook page called “Extreme Day Trips”, they know all about this stuff.

I have a colleague who does tho, but she lives very, very close to the airport. She often takes the next day off too, to recover!

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 10/05/2026 15:51

What's the point? Genuine question. Is it to say you've "done" Venice? Well if course you haven't, you've just indulged a trend. You might as well watch a few YouTube videos, at least it wouldn't involve a flight for the hell if it, and at zero cost.

Then you have to ask what’s the point of travelling at all? It’s a day in a new place, you see the highlight reel and have fine

APurpleSquirrel · 10/05/2026 16:21

We’re going to Florence in May Half term with extended family & several wanted to go to Venice (I’ve been before a few times) - it’s only 2hrs on the fast train so we’ll arrive around 9.30am & are leaving at 6.30pm. We’re not booking to go into any the big ticket places, just having a wander round, go down to the Biennale, & visiting a few unusual places & will get a traghetto so we can have the gondola experience without the price tag.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2026 16:29

The big issue right now is the EU entry system for Italy from the UK. There are some really big issues with take getting through the border in both directions. The latest advice is it's not unlikely to take a couple of hours to get into the country and the that you should be getting to the airport three hours ahead of your return flight. That's five hours at passport control before you have done anything else. There has been talk that the system is on the point of collapse because it's so problematic and that the Italians are likely to abandon the system within weeks, so if this does happen it would take some of the pressure off.

If you want a cheap trip to Italy it's still doable if you fly midweek and are prepared to stay somewhere cheap. But you would need to pay for this accommodation.

As it stands until the border issues are resolved an extreme day trip isn't really that viable. It was last year.

I would either go for three nights and stay somewhere cheap midweek or hold off and see if the system does collapse and then maybe consider an extreme day trip. But right now? No.

Thank you all so much. It seems to be a trend on Tiktok apparently to go to Venice for the day post GCSEs! Thanks for the tips keep them coming

Damn. We have booked to go for ten days after the exams finish! Are we going to be plagued with TikTokers making inane videos?
