What apples should I buy?

Im curious to know what apples everyone likes to buy.

I'm not good at identifying the types I like or knowing their names. I just bought a bag of M&S Braeburn apples which I do not love. I know I don't like Red Delicious.

I love the apples from my neighours tree, they put out a box for people to help themselves. They didn't look appetising to be honest, but they were brilliant! Kind of what I image apples should taste like really.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Pink lady

PurpleLovecats · 08/05/2026 12:47

Pink lady are the best (but pricey!)

FadedRed · 08/05/2026 12:49

My favourite apples are Cox’s, but very rarely see them on sale these days. Mostly but Braeburn now, but they can be a bit hit and miss with flavour.

I love a Cox but they seem increasingly difficult to get hold of. They are tart and crunchy.

Snap!

Pink lady or Granny Smith. Eat with cheddar or Red Leicester cheese.

Red pop. So delicious

apricotdreams · 08/05/2026 12:51

I like Jazz apples the best

exhaustedandoverit · 08/05/2026 12:52

Jazz are the only kind I buy now

AtomicBlondeRose · 08/05/2026 12:53

Pink Lady are dear but the only ones that get consistently eaten without going wrinkly. My Dd took one to school and her friend said admiringly “ooh, you’ve got one of those expensive apples!”. I don't even buy branded stuff usually, but they are the only apples I get now.

happysunr1se · 08/05/2026 12:54

From supermarkets?

Only English grown cox, which aren't in season so no apples for me until September. Russets r ok too but rarely available.

All other supermarket apples are floury, overblown, tough skinned, bland or sugary.

FridayNighFeeling · 08/05/2026 12:55

Pink lady or Jazz

greenapplez · 08/05/2026 12:55

Thanks everyonee! I've made a list to work through.

These are my neighbours apples, if anyone can identify them!

Ohh where else can I get good apples outside form supermarkets? Like farmers markets? Sorry if thats an obvious question, I have no clue!

I bought two Apple trees and I haven’t regretted it. I have apples from August to January. A good Apple nursery can advise on what suits your needs. I like pink lady and discovery.

SisterTeatime · 08/05/2026 12:57

I only buy English apples in season, apart from occasionally buying French Granny Smiths if desperate. Coxs are my favourite.

FlappicusSmith · 08/05/2026 12:57

I don't know what type your neighbour's are, OP, but the apples off our tree look similar and they are delicious

I eat an apple every day and tend to buy the bigger ones (that come in 4 packs). I really like 'Magic Star' from Ocado and quite like 'Envy' ones from Waitrose, etc. Coxes too, if you can get them

Thats very cool. What kind of apples do your trees produce?

Pink Lady
Coxes when they are in season in the autumn.

Instinct1 · 08/05/2026 13:04

Marks and Spencer's Jazz Apples. Awesome.

StationJack · 08/05/2026 13:05

Braeburn

BertieBotts · 08/05/2026 13:05

Why don't you ask your neighbour? If you don't see them out and about knock on their door, take something round for them like some banana bread or some flowers from your garden or whatever and say it's a thank you for the delicious apples, and you were wondering what variety of apples they are.

Buscobel · 08/05/2026 13:13

I love Cox’s apples. The Braeburn we have just now are good, but they can be hit and miss.

I rarely buy apples but when I do i like a royal gala, my husband likes jazz, my Mum favoured Braeburns and Dad liked Cox. I never liked Granny Smiths, find green apples too sharp, pink lady and red delicious will do but royal gala is my favourite.
