What apples should I buy?

Im curious to know what apples everyone likes to buy.

I'm not good at identifying the types I like or knowing their names. I just bought a bag of M&S Braeburn apples which I do not love. I know I don't like Red Delicious.

I love the apples from my neighours tree, they put out a box for people to help themselves. They didn't look appetising to be honest, but they were brilliant! Kind of what I image apples should taste like really.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Since Royal Gala have been mentioned, six for £1.20 Nectar price at the moment. Pink Lady are my favourites but I can be swayed.

Jazz for DH and Granny Smith or a decent Red Delicious for me. Pink Lady are too sweet and ‘fizzy’ for me.
British growers if possible, but Italy export some nice apples. Never from the USA - they all taste fusty.

A tree. I have two in the garden and more apples than I can eat. (You usually have 2 so they can cross-pollinate). One's a Cox's Orange Pippin and the other is a Braeburn. The Cox's are the ones, and the Braeburn the prolific one.

Greengrocers, farm shops and farmer's markets. Neighbours.

You can buy trees in early spring from places like supermarkets.

Russets for me. A really nutty flavour but the skin can be a bit thick.

Why don't you ask your neighbour? If you don't see them out and about knock on their door, take something round for them like some banana bread or some flowers from your garden or whatever and say it's a thank you for the delicious apples, and you were wondering what variety of apples they are.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that next time :)

Pink lady for most of the year. Kissabel when in season (autumn/winter)

@greenapplezi think one is called Discovery. I can’t remember the name of the second, although it produces fruit last. One is July-August and the other September to November. I bought them online from Matthew’s, but I think you could call them for advice. I spoke with one of their gardeners and he was great.

I also bought a Comice pear and a Cherry but I cut down the cherry as the birds always got to them first. They are all on whatever the rootstock is that produces trees for smallish gardens, so they’re easier to pick. About 6ft or maybe a bit more.
