Thinking of going...we like beaches, good food, good pub food, local sites to visit, people watching. Just for Hubby and I.

Llandudno has cropped up...sell it to me with recommendations for all above please ☺️

South wales or west is much nicer.

It's like saying Cornwall is nicer than Dorset or that the Lakes are better than the Peak District. You can't really compare them.
North Wales has a lot that you won't see south of Aberystwyth.

Obviously the best idea would be to visit Wales many a time. I'd recommend Gower and Pembrokeshire, Bannau Brycheiniog, Portmeirion, Ynys MĂ´n, etc but OP was asking specifically about Llandudno.

** Lakes Vyrnwy and Bala are beautiful.

@InterestingDuck , not sure where you are from but the accent there won't be a strong one. It being on the coast, the accent is the NE Wales one. Go further inland or West and the accent is more 'Welsh'.

So I would say not the best place to experience Welsh culture other than the scenery and the Welsh signage.
You'd also need to define Welsh culture - is it culture that is Welsh language or the culture of the Welsh nation.
If it's culture that is in the Welsh language you can rule out anything by Dylan Thomas.

What direction are you coming from? That night influence whether you stay at Llandudno or on Anglesey, but you should definitely spend some time exploring the latter IMHO - it's just so lovely.

There's also some lovely walking countryside inland a bit, between Llandudno and St Asaph way, nice and quiet if you fancy that part of the world but not being directly on the coast where all the people are.

Bodnant Gardens is really beautiful - it's the perfect time of year for it.

We just came back from Anglesey and it was fantastic, so lovely!

Soozikinzii · 08/05/2026 16:25

Another vote for Anglesey Bennllech Beaumaris or treadhur bay. Llandudno has a certain charm for a day or 2 the cottage loaf is excellent and there some good shows at the theatre- we saw Craig Revel Horwood in Annie there was brilliant. . I like walking along the front and the pier as well as the Orme .

Toastforthewin · 08/05/2026 16:28

Conwy is nicer in my opinion.

Llandudno is certainly a bit rough around the edges in parts but it has an old school charm I like.

We paid a lot of money for a meal in the seahorse restaurant and the food was average. The cottage loaf does a lovely menu and Sunday roast, but I would recommend booking.

I enjoyed the spa hotel in Deganwy Quay Hotel and Spa, guests get free use in off peak hours.

Have stayed in St George's Hotel a few times in Llandudno, their breakfast is incredible 🙌 also stayed at a few guest houses too. Its easy to get to by train so we often go once a year for a weekend break.

I think you need to move around for that length of time though personally.

Friends and I spent a week in Llandudno a few years ago. We did Great Orme, Conwy and the castle (went to Conwy twice I think), Bodnant Gardens, Blaenau Festiniog and the heritage railway to Porthmadog. Also spent time just in Llandudno.

Went back for a shorter trip a couple of years ago and did Caernarvon as well as repeating some of the things we did before.

Could also have gone along the coast to Rhyl and Colwyn Bay.

And if you collect Wetherspoons, the one in Llandudno is a former theatre.

The Conwy Mountain is a lovely walk (not really a mountain). Love to stay in Llandudno for a few nights and do walking, visit Conwy, Caernarfon, and on way home (towards Chester) lovely views from the A5, lake walk, etc. I don't find it rough in the evening.

HudALledrith · 08/05/2026 17:45

on way home (towards Chester) lovely views from the A5 It's the A55 and has glorious views over the Dee to Wirral. The A5 takes you towards Shrewsbury and to London, good if you want to go to Llangollen.

I’m very sentimental about Llandudno as I had the happiest of childhood holidays there back in the early/mid 80s, and recognise that does make me somewhat biased.

I hadn’t been for years, but went back for the first time last year. It was full of childhood memories, and as lovely as I remembered, although some of the hotels could perhaps do with a coat of paint. I have always loved the pier, and both the tram and cable cars are nice ways to see the Great Orme.

We stayed at the St. George’s, which was lovely and I would recommend; it’s heartening to read the positive reviews of the Empire as that’s our plan for a short break next year.

Conwy is absolutely lovely; if I wasn’t so sentimental about Llandudno, I would probably say I prefer it. However, there is just something special about Llandudno for me.

If you drive into Llandudno from the north, if you have time it’s nice to leave the A55 at the sign for Old Colwyn, and go through Colwyn Bay, Rhos on Sea and Penrhyn Bay. When you reach the top of the hill, there’s a lovely view of the bay, promenade, pier and the Great Orme as you drop into Llandudno itself.
