I'm not interested in the hantavirus scaremongering and I will not be complying in another lockdown no matter what.

What on Earth are you talking about? Nobody has suggested anything like that!

Give it time.

Doesn’t put me off, not the other things that spread, you do need to be careful with hygiene, just as you do with resort hotels but beyond that I don’t let very unlikely things to put me off doing things.

Btw the only time I’ve had food poisoning was from Waitrose salad (had to be by elimination) so it means you can even get things from middle class shops! (I don’t hold a grudge against Waitrose btw, these things happen, 3rd party suppliers and all that)

ArtAngel · 05/05/2026 16:15

This must be terrible and terrifying for the people trapped on the ship.

And the body of the first person to die was in the ship for 13 days.

Though as Cape Verde is notorious for horrible infections including Shigella, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Campylobacter, leaving 8 dead and 1700 (and counting) taking class action having been infected on holidays, I'm not sure that is where I would want to be taken in a medical emergency.

I do hope those currently ill make a full recovery and no new infections are brewing.

The ship does Antarctic cruises - the only sort of cruise I would do, I think, a cruise as a holiday in general doesn't interest me in the slightest. Just not my choice. But one reason is the infection risk - I know people who have been on Noro-infected ships, COVID was and is rife, etc. And I avoid any buffet style hotel catering.

BellaVita · 05/05/2026 16:16

Nope, but then I wouldn't go on a cruise.

Threesloths · 05/05/2026 16:17

No. Never been interested in being stuck at sea afloat with a load of people.

Monty36 · 05/05/2026 16:27

Have been on a cruise that is famously advertised as being not one.
I have never been so ill.
The hygiene from other passengers was minimal. The number of people I saw licking fingers before picking up food. The sneezing and coughing started about seven days in. I did my best to avoid.
I became ill after a member of staff coughed over me at dinner. About seven days in. Not a slight cough but a full on I am ill cough. I knew I would be ill. I was.
They really are Petri dishes.

I guess when things go wrong at sea, they can go very wrong. At least if you're on land and there's illness or disaster it's much easier to tackle. Including getting to a hospital quickly.

Yes, on health grounds I'd prioritise staying away from Cape Verde in any capacity.

Which line advertises as not being like a cruise?

XenoBitch · 05/05/2026 17:11

Cruises that go according to plan don't make the news. The ones that don't are the ones that make the news.
Therefore people read about a cruise that went wrong and deduct that all cruises are like that.

maftay · 05/05/2026 17:29

I think cruises are like Marmite.

I used to shudder at the thought of going on one, and recently thought, well I can't moan about them if I don't try at least once! So I looked, and researched, and YouTubed, and and and....

I decided against it. Not because of anything inherently unhygienic or virus ridden etc. No. It was the absolute pure confusion in comparing one to the other what with age profile, number of days at sea, destinations, cabin size, deck situation, avoid this deck that end, top floor, balcony. And then the tipping, but no - I could get a package that includes that and alcohol. But I don't drink alcohol, so I don't want one of them either.

Not easy to navigate. Well either I'm stupid or I am not "in the groove" of cruising. Far too much choice and far too much confusion for me.

ainsleysanob · 05/05/2026 17:34

I’ve been on 27 cruises since I was 9. I have never once contracted anything unlike the horrendous norovirus I picked up in hotels in Palma and Morroco or the sausage rolls I bought from Morrisons on Saturday that gave both me and my husband the raging shits!

OhLookLouis · 05/05/2026 17:41

I went on a cruise for my 40th wedding anniversary round the Greek Islands and then the Italian Riviera. I was seasick the entire time and although I enjoyed the time ashore, the only way being onboard was tolerable was sitting in the fresh air at the back of the boat, sipping ginger tea. DH enjoyed the food and the camaraderie with the other passengers but neither of us will be rushing to book another one.

The Hanta virus outbreak doesn’t worry me but I feel so sorry for those affected by it.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 05/05/2026 17:41

"I've never been on a cruise therefore they're terrible."

Love MN.

Crunchymum · 05/05/2026 17:45

As an emetophobe I couldn't think of anything worse.

Look how many Norovirus outbreaks there were on Cruiseships last year 😮

You couldn't pay me to go on a cruise.

Dh loves cruises (I don’t) and we’re taking my elderly parents on Silversea round the med this summer. I frequently get ill.. they are fastidious about hygiene though and I can imagine in the light about what’s happened will be upping their game even more. So no I’m not worried.

WonderingWanda · 05/05/2026 18:11

It wouldn't be enjoyable for me as I am so sea sick. I would need to lay down all the time or take sea sickness pills which would make me fall asleep all the time. Also, I've watched the Costa Concordia documentary don't fancy that experience.

awaynboilyurheid · 05/05/2026 18:42

Love a cruise but wouldn’t do this kind of ship which seems to be a small exploration ship in the Antarctic it’s not for me.
I prefer a larger ship around the med with plenty things to do and no packing different ports and places to explore every day, and most importantly someone doing all the work cooking cleaning so I get a much needed break but honestly if you don’t like them there’s no need to go!
We all have different ideas what makes great holiday I’d never ever go camping for example but if you love it that’s fine.
I’ve been unwell on land holidays but never on a cruise ship!

This kind of thing happening is rare, so no, of course it wouldn't put me off.

Last time this kind of thing happened was early 2020 (6 years ago) when people were kept on board because of covid.

Never heard of this virus before, but I am sure some posters will claim they've heard of it, as they are really 'well read' and 'well educated. 'Wink

I heard about it the first time in relation to Gene Hackman and his wife as I read that they (or at least the lady) died of Hantavirus.

ShizeItsWeegie · 05/05/2026 18:50

I would rather go to jail than on a cruise. So many people and forced fun.

I see the ‘forced fun’ a lot but of all the cruises I have been on I have never been forced to do anything. It’s not compulsory to attend any event, have your photo taken, eat at a specific time or with people you don’t know etc.

Daisy54 · 05/05/2026 19:04

I would feel claustrophobic and trapped, surrounded by the ocean, unable to disembark unless at port.
