Is this enough food and what else would you do if not?

I’ve got six people (not including me) around for drinks in the garden tomorrow from 3pm onwards. One is vegan.

I’ve got a roast chicken (and a vegan ‘chicken’ joint), a medium ham joint, two loaves of crusty bread, butter, coleslaw and a potato salad. The potatoes will be vegan.

I’ll also have olives, cheese, ham, hummus, guacamole and crisps out.

Is this enough?

Looks like plenty to me, I might do some kind of greens like roast broccoli or green beans as they pair well with the chicken, fake chicken and ham and just adds a low carb side for anyone wanting something lighter than bread or potatoes.

tartyflette · 03/05/2026 18:01

Something bean-y for the vegan like spiced chickpeas , lightly curried perhaps, or a lentil and rice dish. (Think it’s called mejadarrah -sp? But half cooked lentils, half cooked basmati rice mixed together with fried onions, garlic, chopped fresh coriander, oil and lemon juice. Served at room temperature.)
Or — Italian style cooked cannellini beans in a rich tomato sauce with garlic, onions, oregano.
Leftovers will be very good the next day!

Seems fine to me- as PP said I'd maybe do a green veg on the side for someone who doesn't want carbs/its another vegan side, but otherwise all seems okay.

Sounds lovely. And plenty of food. I might add a green salad or mixed salad for a bit of a low carb option and colour.

Blorengia · 03/05/2026 18:04

Another vote for something easy and green... a good mixed leaf salad, maybe with a few sliced peppers on top, or steamed broccoli or summat.

thinkprint · 03/05/2026 18:04

I can do a watercress, spinach and rocket salad with red onions and beetroot. I was a bit reluctant to do a salad because they never seem to be eaten but I’ll include it.

I’d do some kind of salad or green bean based side dish. Probably because I’m not a big fan of potato salad or coleslaw.

Thowaway · 03/05/2026 18:06

I was going to say I’d add a salad! Otherwise perfect. You know your guests best though :-)

(I’d spend my time picking out the red onion from the salad as raw onion gives me horrendous heartburn. But that is just me and I’d be happy to do so if I was being fed!)

7238SM · 03/05/2026 18:09

Sounds good, but its very meat/carb heavy. I agree, I'd have some green veg, spring greens etc.

-Most parmesan contains rennet, so only add for the non vegans https://www.recipetineats.com/roasted-asparagus/
-Spring veg mix peas, broad beans, green beans etc

Roasted Asparagus

Just a really quick, very tasty way to prepare roasted asparagus: cook in a hot oven with garlic, finish with lemon juice & parmesan. YUM!

Sounds nice. I’d do a caprese salad too. They are always so popular.

Fast800goingforit · 03/05/2026 18:13

The broccoli can be served at room temperature with something like gremolata on top as a kind of dressing - grated lemon rind, lemon juice, chopped parsley a little grated garlic and olive oil. Or just a squeeze of lemon and some olive oil. Far more likely to get eaten than the green salad and more substantial.

Is the coleslaw suitable for the vegan and what are you serving to dip into the hummus and guacamole? Also butter alternative for the vegan?

Fast800goingforit · 03/05/2026 18:14

Asparagus is a good shout too.

I wouldn't eat the salad or the coleslaw you've proposed OP as I don't like raw onion in anything and don't like beetroot mixed in with other things! You'll have a better idea about your guests's tastes though.

Non-vegan though…
fake Mozzarella is not good.

No, the coleslaw isn’t suitable for the vegan.

Crisps for the dips. That broccoli does sound delicious.

They are! I also thought a Caesar but then thought I may as well make it vegan if I’m doing a salad.

Yes, I’m not a dessert person so always forgot them.

Sounds great. But as others say maybe something green and something with beans. But it definitely sounds enough volume wise.

Relaxd · 03/05/2026 18:23

I’d second the suggestions of something more lentil based than mock meat (assuming you meant fake chicken not a nut roast type dish) for the vegan unless you really know they like it. The rest sounds fine.

Fast800goingforit · 03/05/2026 18:24

Check the crisps are vegan - sounds bonkers, but some flavoured crisps have things like whey and lactose in them.

Edited

I told the vegan I was doing chicken and ham for the others and asked what she wanted and she said the fake chicken joint, so that’s definitely fine for her.

Thanks - already aware of this, but good to check.

I think a big green salad would be nice. Not all vegans want to constantly be served beans or lentils.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 03/05/2026 18:33

I think that’s plenty, especially with some salad or greens. Perhaps ask your vegan friend to bring a little vegan butter for the bread.
