School has asked students to bring in a single flower - how the hell do I pack it so it's not dead by the time it's needed?

As the title -

School has asked all pupils bring in a single flower next week for an event.
No tin foil or cellophane allowed.

How do I package this so that it's not a dishevelled dying mess by the time it is needed during the day?

I am really not green fingered!

My child’s school did this.

carnation is your best bet

They carry it in their hands. Pick a long stem like daffodil etc.

Edited

Daffodils all gone now!

NoYouCantComeToTheWedding · 01/05/2026 22:38

Why would you need to pack it in anything, just get your kid to carry it in. What happens to the flower between arriving at school and the thing it's needed for is the school's problem!

Maybe they are driving them for an art lesson.

RosieBurdock · 01/05/2026 22:52

Is it for May Crowning?

ApplebyArrows · 01/05/2026 23:05

Some PPs don't seem to realise that some small flowers can either very quickly. I doubt a daisy would make it to morning break.

A daffodil would probably be OK though I would think (if you could find one!). Roses can last ages, though unfortunately they come with a lot of spiky bits.

Can you tell us why, if OP isn't going to ?

Wrap damp kitchen roll around the stem and put in a takeaway container to prevent squishing. If time is short pick the evening before and store in the fridge to keep fresh.

Marian Liturgy? Basically most kids bring in a flower and they are gathered into a big bunch from each class. Some kids bring in a bouquet, some bring in a twig, some bring in a daffodil from the church car park a flower from home. You get an amazing mix of flowers and greenery.

Thanks @RosieBurdock and @TonysGotANewMotor

I'd not come across / heard of that before Smile

Sorry for the late reply!
Yes I think it is for a May Day Celebration or May Crowning as other posters also mentioned.

So would a long stemmed flower, wrapped in wet toilet paper and then wrapped with maybe baking paper or twine work?
Or I could get a yoghurt pot with a lid and cut a small hole in the lid and pop the flower in?

Put it in a tupperware or takeaway container?

HoiityToity · Yesterday 17:43

Now that’s lovely! I feel bad now for saying it was ridiculous for them all to bring in a flower. I’m all for it now!

It’s usually for a whole school project (often religious based) ours was to insert your flower into the big cross of flowers (made of some oasis stuff I believe) for Easter service but it could be something similar

Tontostitis · Yesterday 19:23

Wet kitchen towel and an old dish cloth

The concept is nice but it's not exactly easy to get hold of a single flower 🤷

ShetlandishMum · Yesterday 20:35

Would send a dried one.

The florists here are happy to sell one.

If you are lucky enough to have a florist nearby 😂
Surely it would be better for the school to make flowers as part of an art lesson.
I still have a wonderful memory of the flower I made at primary school in circa 1984. We used bendy wire and old tights.
(Sorry @dazedandblue gone on a bit of a "not really relevant" point there....I hope the flower thing is a success 🏵️🌸🌼)
