How long do you spend in the hairdresser?

I got my half head highlights done yesterday. Foils, shoulder length hair, washed, trimmed, blowed dried and curled with straighteners. I was in there four hours.

I suspect that it’s taking so long because she leaves me with the bleach on my hair and then deals with another client every time. She used to put a ring heater on my head and wash the bleach off as soon as it pinged, but she has fewer staff now and I feel I’m being left for longer than necessary. This is annoying because of the time wasted but also surely it can’t be good for my hair?

I like my hairdresser but this and other little issues caused by the salon struggling financially (uncomfortable back wash basin, massage chairs broken, the salon was freezing yesterday because they hadn’t had the heating on Sunday and Monday) makes me think about finding another hairdresser.

Cost £120 and I go every 6 weeks.

I have the same as you and usually I’m there around 2 hours.

dudsville · 29/04/2026 11:17

One of the v many reasons I no longer go to the salon. It's more efficient for them to have us queuing up at all the various stages, but it's such a drain.

hairyunicorn · 29/04/2026 11:19

I'm black, my hair usually takes between 5 and 8 hours, depending on what i'm having done.

Too long. I have a dry cut (pixie length), admittedly I do have very thick hair. If it's less than an hour it's a miracle.

ItsJustMeMyself · 29/04/2026 11:20

Exactly the same for me. I'm due to go in about an hour and I bloody well dread it.

BillieWiper · 29/04/2026 11:22

That's ages! A whole head plus trim and blow dry usually takes about two hours, two and a half? My hair just touches middle of breasts length wise.

About 30 mins to mix the stuff and add the foils, then leave for 20-30 mins, maybe toner, then wash, then trim/dry in whichever order and basic blow-dry.

badgersbadgerseverywhere · 29/04/2026 13:06

It’s not on is it really? As I said I do like her and I’m quite happy with my hair. But these little things niggle at me. Also she knows I use Head & Shoulders DermaXPro because of my itchy flaky scalp, but she keeps telling me how bad it is for my hair, it’s full of plastic and it was banned in America because it’s so damaging for hair (I googled, it wasn’t). I’m perfectly happy with the condition of my hair after using it, in fact after I’ve had my hair washed in her shampoo is when it feels most dry!

No time at all as I personally can’t think of much worse than sitting in a salon for hours on any kind of regular basis. I cut and dye my hair at home and have done for over a decade now.

luckylavender · 29/04/2026 13:11

2 hours. Same that you have

WinterFrogs · 29/04/2026 13:12

20 minutes 😆 Quick wet cut and done. I hate going!

TomatoSandwiches · 29/04/2026 13:12

Go in at 9am and am lucky to leave before 12pm, I have pretty much the same as you, I end up doing a lot of family admin and the online food shop on my phone so I don't get bored or fall asleep.

MrsCarmelaSoprano · 29/04/2026 13:13

Cut and blow dry is 50 mins.

Highlights with sitting under a spaceship ring thing about an hour and 40 mins

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 29/04/2026 13:19

When i was getting a full head of highlights it was a good 3 hours. SO boring!

i stopped dying it in lockdown and now it's 45 mins cut and blowdry - bliss

7238SM · 29/04/2026 13:20

That is the reason I colour my hair at home and have it cut only about twice year! I can't stand wasting a saturday sitting in a chair making idle chit chat.

ohsotired2022 · 29/04/2026 13:23

I used to go to a salon like this.
i had went for years and stayed loyal. My hairdresser would be seeing constant clients.
I ended up switching one time as a one off to a hairdresser more local to me as I couldn’t get an appointment for something I was going to last minute.

i get everything you said and I’m done in 2 hours now.
My hairdresser only focuses on one client at a time.

It’s so much better !

bananaboats · 29/04/2026 13:47

About 2 hours but I get an all over colour now, when I used to get highlights it was much longer. Along with the other issues youve said I'd be looking for a new salon!

StartledPineapple · 29/04/2026 13:55

About two hours for the same as you - every eight weeks. 30 minutes for a blow dry every week

ItsJustMeMyself · 29/04/2026 13:58

I'm currently cooking in foils. So far been 1.5 hrs and thats all thats been done. Still have toner, cut, dry and straighten to go. My hairdresser is award winning colourist. Still hate it and think my face is burning 😝

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 29/04/2026 13:58

Same as you but takes 2 hours and less than £60

blankcanvas3 · 29/04/2026 14:05

3 or 4 hours with foils, conditioning treatment, trim and blow dry. 1 hour for just a blow dry, about 8 hours when I get my extensions done

bananamachinewater · 29/04/2026 14:15

I think this is a bit how long is a piece of string type question...I get alternate full head foils and t-bar.
Had my full head last week and she was 1hr15 just putting them in. She puts so many foils in for a better result but this means the back/bottom ones are pretty much fully developed by the time she's put the front ones in. She removes mine in 2-3 sections as and when they are ready then after it's all washed out I sit with my toner on for a good 20mins. I was 5 hours for that appointment and I didn't bother getting her to straighten it (because my arse was numb by that point) just a decent blow dry.
Sometimes, like yours she has other clients in between but I don't think it seems to add much more time on as she times it well. Maybe 10mins or so waiting for her to come and blow dry after all the colour is off occasionally.
Ultimately if you're not happy with the hairdresser because she has changed what she's doing, then it's probably time to look for another.
Only thing I can't stand about mine is her brushing/combing my tuggy hair out before drying...it's like she forgets it's attached to my head 😭have jokingly offered to do it myself but she's not taken the hint!

DramaAlpaca · 29/04/2026 14:17

It's about 45 minutes for a cut and blow dry every six weeks or so, then around three hours for highlights, cut and blow dry every three months.

BernadetteJune · 29/04/2026 14:39

Could not do 4 hours. I would expect 2 hours max. I think it is okay to move hairdresser every now and then - gives you a fresh start and you never know - you might find something different!

badgersbadgerseverywhere · Yesterday 11:49

Oh god I’d forgotten about how she combs my hair when it’s wet! The tugging and pulling and I can imagine my poor hair snapping! I have a lovely wide tooth comb at home that I use when my hair is wet, I always want to suggest she gets one.

About 90 mins for a curly cut and dry. I’m the only client in there though as he only does 1 at a time
