While out on a bike ride, almost ran over this lovely snake. Adder I think, around 2 foot long at least.

Saw a really large adder

I used to have adders nesting in my muck heap (Norfolk), I was afraid of them.

Whyaremyradiatorsgreen · Yesterday 06:09

I have dogs. I don’t ever want to see one!!

PainterInPeril · Today 07:56

Ok, well that's me shaking in my shoes now! I thought adders were only around 18 inches long. 😬

MsSmartShoes · Today 07:57

I’d love to spot one (from a safe distance).

FlatErica · Today 08:17

That’s so cool!

thetinsoldier · Today 08:18

Beautiful!

Fantastic!! I've once seen a large one like that - about thirty five years ago on the Pembrokeshire coastal path. And I've seen a couple of little ones in Northumberland.

The Northumberland sightings came on a day when I had noticed my dog jumping backwards a couple of times, and I speculated that he had been encountering them more than I had. That was a bit frightening, since it made me think about the risk of him being bitten. Very remote location, don't know how quickly I could have got him to a vet.

EDIT: Thank you v much for the pic. A real pleasure to see it.

We stumbled across an adder sunning itself by the Jubilee River in Windsor/Eton.

Had literally just put my dog on lead to cross the bridge as she was heading straight up to it. Did not think a good idea.

It was also big and very chill but I felt the hackles go on my neck!!

Horrific! That’s massive and awful 🙈

Me and two neighbours had to get rid of our ponds last summer to stop grass snakes swimming in them. Before that idea I’d planned to burn down the house and then sell it 😂

What a shame!

On a hot day I was once swimming in a flooded gravel pit next to a friend’s house, when I saw a little head zigzagging through the water a few feet away - yes, a grass snake, doing no harm to anybody - unless you happened to be e.g. a frog.

That is lovely - but not particularly big, I don't think, as adders go.

No need to panic though @BashfulClam . It's well out in the open and easy to avoid. They really aren't aggressive, though worth keeping your dog on a lead, so that they don't go too close . . .

Adders rarely get bigger than two feet, so it is pretty big.

Very jealous. I've never seen one but when we lived in Hampshire the cat would bring grass snakes into the house all the time.

Beautiful creature.

Bluegreenbird · Today 08:55

Lovely. Saw a massive one on a path in Bushy Park in Richmond a few years ago. They look out of place in Britain!

pointythings · Today 11:13

I have seen them where I live when doing field archery, and will be on the lookout this coming weekend as yhe ground we are shooting at is perfect for them. They're beautiful creatures, you just have to be sensible around them.

I sent the pic to a friend in Adelaide, Aus.

She sent back a pic of a 3 meter brown snake scooting across the cricket pitch at her sons match, and told me to toughen up buttercup 😁

Gorgeous snake, lucky you, I've only ever seen a grassnake in the UK ! My ex accidentally ran over a brown snake in 'the Bush' in Victoria, the poor thing was severed in 2 and the twit got out of the truck to see if it was ok despite my pleas not to. The 'head' half went to bite him & he jumped back avoiding it luckily. They are very aggressive!
