How is Aldeburgh pronounced?

WhatKindOfCake · 23/04/2026 10:33

Just that really. I've only ever seen it written down. I work at a heritage property that contains various art works. One of our paintings is by Maggi Hambling and I mention to visitors her friendships with George Melley and with Francis Bacon. I also like to mention the Scallop sculpture on Aldeburgh beach, but I'm never sure if I'm saying it correctly. Any locals here to help me out?

Not local, but another art fan. Love love love Maggi’s work and the Scallop is incredible.

My attempt to convey the pronunciation is

Awld-bru

That’s as close as I can get - the A is long, and burgh is like in Edinburgh. The e isn’t pronounced.

Wiaa · 23/04/2026 10:38

I'm not from there but i think it's pronounced all bra / awl bru

MaidMiriam · 23/04/2026 10:39

Awl-d-bruh.

Awl-d-bruh.

This one

StripedPillowcase · 23/04/2026 10:41

I would say Orrld-bru, with the bru like brush. I have a Yorkshire accent so brush is a clipped vowel.

Planner2026 · 23/04/2026 10:44

OHLD-bruh

I love her too and I'm amazed at the number of visitors we get who have never heard of her!

Thanks everyone. I will now say "Awldbruh" with confidence!

Edinburgh is pronounced Eddin-burrah. There is no bruh in it.

sesquipedalian · 23/04/2026 11:10

I live in Suffolk. It’s Awl -bruh. (There is the merest touch of a “d” but you can’t really hear it.)

minipie · 23/04/2026 11:12

Yes I’ve always said it without the D

Awl burrah or Awl bruh - kind of in between those two.

ForTipsyFinch · 23/04/2026 11:13

It has kind of a long A too. You don’t hear much of the D.

DistractMe · 23/04/2026 11:15

Used to live down the road from there. The D isn't pronounced. I would say Awl-bruh, emphasis on the first syllable, the second one almost thrown away.

I’m from the area and that’s how I pronounce it.
But now I’ve said it to myself so many times it sounds wrong!

FUDJTFOTTFEOF · 23/04/2026 11:26

Ahlburuh.

Rituelec · 23/04/2026 11:27

Planner2026 · 23/04/2026 10:44

OHLD-bruh

Yes. This is how we say it.

I live here.

sesquipedalian · 23/04/2026 11:27

@ FUDJTFOTTFEOF -

No, it’s very definitely Awwwwwl - bruh.

Riverpaddling · 23/04/2026 11:33

Rituelec · 23/04/2026 11:27

Yes. This is how we say it.

I live here.

Lived nearby for years and this is what I say too.

Definitely not Ahlburuh

As you live there I'll go with your version!

I'm from Worcestershire, so I'm well used to helping people (generally non-brits) with pronouncing where I live 😄.

Myfridgeiscool · 23/04/2026 12:34

There’s definitely no ‘d’ sound.
All-bruh

hereforthelolz · 23/04/2026 12:37

My attempt to convey the pronunciation is
Awld-bru

I read that the same way I would Irn-Bru 😂

I say Old-bruh, with no much emphasis on the the 'd'

OkayyThen · Yesterday 18:03

We live a few miles away and would say "Awl(d)-bruh" as well (with a super gentle d) - very almost "Awl-bruh".

Ifeelbetterwhenimdancing · Yesterday 18:22

Old-bruh

My husband went to school there and this is exactly how he says it!
