How is Aldeburgh pronounced?

Just that really. I've only ever seen it written down. I work at a heritage property that contains various art works. One of our paintings is by Maggi Hambling and I mention to visitors her friendships with George Melley and with Francis Bacon. I also like to mention the Scallop sculpture on Aldeburgh beach, but I'm never sure if I'm saying it correctly. Any locals here to help me out?

Yep, grew up there, it's All-bruh, first syllable emphasised.

You say all-dee-bruh? I have never heard a native Suffolker pronounce the d like that.

Edinburgh is pronounced Eddin-burrah. There is no bruh in it.

Only if you have a certain accent. I would pronounce it Edinbruh and did for all the years I lived there.

I live in Suffolk. It’s Awl -bruh. (There is the merest touch of a “d” but you can’t really hear it.)

That's right (husband's family live nearby)

plsdontlookatme · 24/04/2026 19:49

I've always known it as ALL-bruh.

This. The 'd' is only hinted at due to the soft glottal stop.
