Only here to vent about neighbours b#&@!@£ cat! Ruined my kitchen!

I have a very elderly cat and therefore a cat flap. My old cat cannot tolerate a collar so for years she has just entered and exited the cat flap at her will.

A neighbour much further down the street abandoned a big old Tom cat a few months ago and it’s been roaming around, pinching food here and there. Another neighbour has taken it in and is feeding it regularly. All good.

I came downstairs yesterday morning and was greeted by the very strong and distinctive smell of Tom cat wee. Went into the kitchen and it was eye watering. The fucking cat had sprayed urine all over the kitchen, up the table legs, over the area where my cat eats and worst of all up the fronts of the cream gloss kitchen cabinet fronts, this has etched the gloss off the cabinets so in the light you can see the spray marks up the front. It will not clean off - it’s actually taken the gloss off the surface.

Im absolutely livid! It’s obviously come in during the night. I now need to try and decide either to stop my own cat going out by closing and locking the cat flap or getting a new, expensive flap that only opens for my cat.

I can’t even begin to put into words how annoyed I am, a 20k kitchen with about 5 cabinet fronts now all ruined with white marks up the front of them. FFS!!!!!

Not sure if this helps at all? Seems unfair that dog owners ARE liable whilst cats are not - we hit an escaped dog and in addition to the poor dog being severely injured it caused £5k of damage to the car - ended up in court because the owners pet insurers would have nothing to do with it as they were deemed negligent for not dog-proofing their property fence. We have two dogs and a prior once was an escape artist with no road sense. We have up to £1m 3rd party insurance as standard on our policy. Thank God.

Where does your cat do its shits? In the neighbours gardens? Think of this as payback.

You can get microchip catflaps that dont need a collar as they work using your cats microchip (if your cat has a microchip - if not, can be put in by a vet)

Yep I am baffled people don’t have them these days. Although out neighbour’s cat used to tailgate ours through so we had to have the cat flap company specially programme ours to let a cat out but not in! They had never spec’d it in as never thought it would be necessary. He was a lovely cat though.

We do often find out cats trying to get in though so with having it

I had this exact problem until I got my girl a microchip Sureflap
cat flap and then it was problem solved from day one. Just uses her microchip on her neck. No collar required. You can also get cat flaps that prevent your cat coming in with “presents”. Very technical these days!

NotDarkGothicMama · 21/04/2026 19:22

Really annoying but repairable by a company that refinishes gloss doors. Get a microchip cat flap and neuter your neighbour's Tom to stop a repeat incident. Neutering costs £10 if you live within the M25.

ThatFairy · 21/04/2026 19:24

My niece has an uncastrated cat and it's pee absolutely stinks and was making me not like going over

worrisomeasset · 21/04/2026 19:50

I don’t know why so many posters are saying the cat is a stray. OP has said the cat was abandoned but has since been taken in by a kindly neighbour. It looks like it developed a lot of bad habits under its previous neglectful owners and it’s not been able to shake these habits off now that it’s being looked after. Also, a lot of posters are assuming the cat is unneutered. As I’ve said before, OP hasn’t clearly stated that this is the case. An older cat that’s neutered later in life will often continue the behaviour patterns that it developed while intact.

No, but the news doesn’t feature cats mauling people to death every other week, so swings and roundabouts.

This is very true. Cats have killed people, but not by mauling them, it is usually infected wounds, and at a much lower occurrence.

Parsleyforme · 21/04/2026 20:25

I also have a microchip catflap and it’s great. There are current turf disputes with my two girls and four spraying Toms who have started pooping on my back step but thankfully can’t get in. I actually only got the microchip flap when I got a kitten, before that I had problems with other cats coming in and having screaming matches with my older girl. I propped a big mirror up on my side of the flap against a chair so that other cats would see themselves and not know what was in the room. Did the trick and didn’t have any further intruders that I know of.

Unfortunately no advice about the kitchen cupboards but I would be so angry. I didn’t know pee could stain like that! A friend recently burned the worktop in a rental house and she managed to get a guy out who made it look like new so hopefully you can find a repair person.

Bered · 22/04/2026 06:50

The Op is speculating and has zero proof it’s Tom. Her insurer likely won’t cover damage by animals in any event.

And if your kitchen is so precious to you, invest in a microchip cat flap. Obviously

My cats are trained to come in and use their litter tray. You can train cats. Most people cant be bothered.
Next doors cats try to shit in my garden but one of my cats makes it her mission to guard her territory so that never happens.

ginasevern · 21/04/2026 18:30

Yes, a microchip catflap only allows your own cat to enter. It obviously prevents any other creatures getting in too. It only opens when it detects your own cat's microchip. They are brilliant.

Although outr new neighbours cats worked out that they could tap the flap to make it bounce forwards and get their paw in to still get in our microchip one. We put a camera inside to work out how they were still getting in. Weve had to replace catflap with one that is microchip in and out ie doesn't ope either way without also if anything trys to enter from outside without a chip it double locks. Its cost us £££ but they are ex farm cats and a bloody nuisance.

Horses7 · 22/04/2026 19:12

Wow - I’m livid for you!

susiedaisy1912 · 21/04/2026 17:43

Ah that’s awful op. I’d be absolutely fuming as well. Can you get the kitchen deep cleaned and claim off the insurance for the damage?

They left a hole in their door permanently open on purpose, for any wildlife of any kind to get in and cause damage. Unless you are suggesting a fraudulent claim, or potentially some accidental damage although that might be pushing it, they aren't getting a claim.

Edamcheese · 22/04/2026 19:35

WhatCanIWatchOnNetflix · 21/04/2026 17:57

You could see if you could claim on your insurance if it’s bad enough to cost a lot, but not sure where you stand as you have a cat flap that any cat could come through. How much would new doors be? We had to replace a couple of doors and I don’t remember it being that expensive. You can get gloss doors
re finished so all is not lost.

Poor cat being abandoned. There are some total fuckwits in the world. Who the fuck abandons their pet. 😞

Edited

I can understand how you must feel it’s soul destroying especially when you’ve worked hard to have a nice kitchen. You could get doors replaced but there will be a slight colour difference ,as the suggestion of getting them refinished sounds the better and cheaper. Nor sure where you can get them refinished maybe where your units came from maybe able to help.

ElixirOfLife · 21/04/2026 18:00

I’d be so pissed off! What a mess. I’d lock the cat flap and teach the cat to ask to go out instead.

I can’t have a cat flap as there isn’t anywhere suitable but my cat doesn’t have a litter tray either. He just stands at the door when he wants to go out and peeps at the window to come back in. Hope it works for you, you don’t want any more of this tomcat spraying everywhere. Plus your cat will feel threatened and get stressed.

Um, with no litter tray doesn’t this mean your cat is fouling someone else’s garden?

I have no idea what previous posters mean by ‘yet another house ruined by urine’ I’ve not posted before!
Here’s the pic for proof! There’s 5 fronts with this issue!

I don't think anyone else answered you on this point but someone's dad got pissed slept on her new sofa and wet himself. So literally pissed. She was really upset obviously.

Nothing worse than cat wee it’s new flooring new bloody everything made soo much worse for you as it’s not your cat . I’d be absolutely livid . Can you get a cat flap that works off the chip in your cat sure my daughters is like that it’ll only open for her two cats

Partypants83 · 22/04/2026 19:58

Our cat flap excludes other cats who don't have the chip that lets them in. (Get your cat chipped by the vet before you buy the cat flap)
Claim on insurance for door damage. If your insurance doesn't cover this, buy new doors and fit them /get handy person to fit them

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 22/04/2026 20:07

Speak to your insurance company. A cat got into my house and caused over £1000 worth of damage to my bedroom. It was all covered under my insurance.

Purpl · 22/04/2026 20:41

How old is the kitchen? Can you get replacement doors? I know be expensive but its going to upset you everytime you go in there. Or if have accidental danage contents insurance claim.
so upsetting. Now he found his way in he will be back so i would lock the flap.

LLM21 · 22/04/2026 20:55

Contact your local cats protection branch , they might be able to help catch the cat, neuter him and rehome him. Life is pretty crap for a tom cat so helping him will help you too.

stichguru · 22/04/2026 21:11

Do you know that your cat doesn't go and poo in the garden of catless homes that don't want to have to remove cat shit off their lawn every time their kids want to play? Letting your cat do that is WAY WAY worse than a neighbour letting their cat go through an unlocked, cat-sized door you deliberately put in your home.

Melonjuice · 22/04/2026 21:17

Acutissima · 21/04/2026 18:12

Genuinely, I would catch the cat (somehow??) and take it to a shelter and tell them it's abandoned and wandering
Unneutered animals shouldn't be wandering loose.

Then I would begrudgingly claim through insurance (or maybe just replace the doors myself if they aren't too much ££££)

Many many shelters put down cats. It will mostly likely end up miserable in a cage and then be put down. Probably better if you all chipped in you and the neighbours to have him neutered. Plus he would feel much more comfortable and he would not need to spray everywhere. Poor cat. I'm sorry for your cabinets but this is your own fault having a cat flap which allows other cats and in some cases I've seen foxes and rats in

worrisomeasset · 22/04/2026 22:05

Will posters please note that the cat is NOT a stray!

The thread title mentions the “neighbours b#&@!@£ cat!”, not a stray b#&@£ cat.
OP has stated that the cat was abandoned but that a neighbour has “taken it in and is feeding it regularly”. OP hasn’t even explicitly stated the cat is unneutered, people have just jumped to that conclusion. OP just needs to follow the advice of many posters here and get a microchip cat door.
