Only here to vent about neighbours b#&@!@£ cat! Ruined my kitchen!

I have a very elderly cat and therefore a cat flap. My old cat cannot tolerate a collar so for years she has just entered and exited the cat flap at her will.

A neighbour much further down the street abandoned a big old Tom cat a few months ago and it’s been roaming around, pinching food here and there. Another neighbour has taken it in and is feeding it regularly. All good.

I came downstairs yesterday morning and was greeted by the very strong and distinctive smell of Tom cat wee. Went into the kitchen and it was eye watering. The fucking cat had sprayed urine all over the kitchen, up the table legs, over the area where my cat eats and worst of all up the fronts of the cream gloss kitchen cabinet fronts, this has etched the gloss off the cabinets so in the light you can see the spray marks up the front. It will not clean off - it’s actually taken the gloss off the surface.

Im absolutely livid! It’s obviously come in during the night. I now need to try and decide either to stop my own cat going out by closing and locking the cat flap or getting a new, expensive flap that only opens for my cat.

I can’t even begin to put into words how annoyed I am, a 20k kitchen with about 5 cabinet fronts now all ruined with white marks up the front of them. FFS!!!!!

Pics!

Wow, yet another story about a house ruined by urine. Must be the season for it.

susiedaisy1912 · 21/04/2026 17:43

Ah that’s awful op. I’d be absolutely fuming as well. Can you get the kitchen deep cleaned and claim off the insurance for the damage?

It’s very strange.

LittleMissClutter · 21/04/2026 17:48

One of the reasons why I never had a cat flap when I had cats.

I'm surprised it's taken this long to be honest as a lot of random cats tend to enter them during the Winter.

feckingcat · 21/04/2026 17:50

I have no idea what previous posters mean by ‘yet another house ruined by urine’ I’ve not posted before!
Here’s the pic for proof! There’s 5 fronts with this issue!

See if that style of cabinet is still available and replace the ruined ones. Claim on insurance.

dementedpixie · 21/04/2026 17:52

You can get microchip catflaps that dont need a collar as they work using your cats microchip (if your cat has a microchip - if not, can be put in by a vet)

Claim on your insurance

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/04/2026 17:55

Nightmare! We had to get rid of our cat flap as other cats were coming in. We also have a feral Tom that sprays over everything in the garden and it’s disgusting. What a nightmare. I would be apocalyptically angry in your position. What can you logically do though apart from get rid of the cat flap and replace the cupboard doors?

WhatCanIWatchOnNetflix · 21/04/2026 17:57

You could see if you could claim on your insurance if it’s bad enough to cost a lot, but not sure where you stand as you have a cat flap that any cat could come through. How much would new doors be? We had to replace a couple of doors and I don’t remember it being that expensive. You can get gloss doors
re finished so all is not lost.

Poor cat being abandoned. There are some total fuckwits in the world. Who the fuck abandons their pet. 😞

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 21/04/2026 17:59

Probably the type of people who couldn’t be arsed to castrate the thing and so it pissed over everything.

ElixirOfLife · 21/04/2026 18:00

I’d be so pissed off! What a mess. I’d lock the cat flap and teach the cat to ask to go out instead.

I can’t have a cat flap as there isn’t anywhere suitable but my cat doesn’t have a litter tray either. He just stands at the door when he wants to go out and peeps at the window to come back in. Hope it works for you, you don’t want any more of this tomcat spraying everywhere. Plus your cat will feel threatened and get stressed.

Claim on your insurance

Some companies don't pay out for damage caused by pets.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/04/2026 18:08

You definitely need a microchip cat flap or a dog 😉

We had issues with random cats coming in via the cat flap until we got a dog, they’ve not tried since 🙈😂

Im not surprised you’re upset, that’s really grim.

LaughingCat · 21/04/2026 18:11

Aaaand…this is why we have a microchip catflap. We had a similar tomcat that broke into our house and sprayed one of our cats - she was never really comfortable in the house after that. Microchip catflap all the way.

Acutissima · 21/04/2026 18:12

Genuinely, I would catch the cat (somehow??) and take it to a shelter and tell them it's abandoned and wandering
Unneutered animals shouldn't be wandering loose.

Then I would begrudgingly claim through insurance (or maybe just replace the doors myself if they aren't too much ££££)

worrisomeasset · 21/04/2026 18:14

Microchip cat doors are readily available and have been for years. You don’t need to put a collar on your cat for them to work, they’re activated by your cat’s microchip and won’t let other cats in. We fitted ours about 15 years ago after having visits from an intact Tom who was keen to make the sweet love with our neutered female cat.

YummyPieCrust · 21/04/2026 18:15

Lost for words. This is horrible! Insurance won't respond because they typically will not allow for claims by pets or 'pests'. It might be worth a try, in the event you have a broker who can find a loophole, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

You can litigate civilly if you know who the owner of the cat is?

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 21/04/2026 18:17

I doubt insurance would cover damage caused by having an entrance that any Tom(sorry) Dick or Harry can enter.

TheDOS · 21/04/2026 18:18

At least you have a cat. I don’t, and wouldn’t but we once had one enter through an open window and unfortunately strangled itself trying to get out again. Its struggle made the most horrendous mess in my house. And to cap it all the neighbour blamed me.

Exactly this. Of course other cats will get into your open cat flap. I cannot believe it hasnt happened sooner tbh.

Whosthetabbynow · 21/04/2026 18:20

I love cats but what a bastard. I’d be fuming

dunroaminaroind · 21/04/2026 18:23

I’m also amazed it hadn’t happened sooner. You’ve basically got an open door for any old Tom
cat to get it. Yes of course it’s really shit and I do feel sorry for you, it’s also shitty that the poor old cat has had a shit like and no one has looked after him properly and had him done.
But, microchip cat flaps are not a new invention. You’ve learnt your lesson the hard way, now change your cat flap.
