What funny little quirks do your children have?

Tell me a funny quirk your child has.

I’ll go first.
DS5 - Loves adverts. Obsessed with fun jungles, we showed him Auto glass repair, auto glass replace and he went wild. Bonus if you know any other jingles we can show him.
DD6 - Uses “old people” phrases. If you say “see you next week!” She will say “god willing”. She’s got this from my dad who thinks it’s the funniest thing ever.

They both have pretty strong Scottish accents because they’re Scottish but they say certain things in my English accent. Mainly things like “okie dokie” and “oh dear” because they’ve heard me say them so much. They also refer to people as “mush” because their grandad universally refers to everyone as mush.

When my DS is doing a poo, he will frantically run around like a maniac, then when finished, calmly walks in the room and quietly announces "poo".

Also, whenever he has done something requiring minimal effort, I.e picking like 2 of his toys up off the floor, will put his hand on his back, wipe his forehead and say "phewww!"

Whenever my DD2 wants to get something she knows she's not allowed i.e a juice right before bed, she will go and get one, walk in the room with a smug smile on her face, holding it out, and just says "hello!"

She also likes to chatter away on her toy phone, and if I try to speak to her while she's taking this highly important phonecall, she covers the phone with her hand and gives me a disapproving look, and says "no mummy, busy" then proceeds with her call lol. Idk where she has learnt this as I never call anyone haha

My son is nearly 3 and has a language delay so can’t say much. But he’s started dramatically cheering like someone has scored a goal whenever he sees someone he likes. It’s doing wonders for my self esteem having somebody cheering every time I walk into the room. He’s also started doing it with his one to one at nursery which is how I knew he was finally settling there.

My non verbal 3.5yo does this too so I totally get the feeling 🥰

FireHorse29 · 21/04/2026 21:05

My 2.5 year old daughter used to be quite non-affectionate (like a cat really) so would reply "but I don't want that" if you said I love you. Now she's more inclined to respond positively, but if someone says it and she doesn't want to say it back, she will diplomatically reply "oh, I just can't memember."

We've also had some unintentional consequences of trying to explain the dangers of running off, as she now waits for quiet moments in public to point at strangers and ask loudly "is that man going to take me?" 🤦🏻 With a cheeky smile, so it's more her traumatising us than being traumatised!

She also seems to have an endless memory for others' embarrassing events, one time when she was maybe 12 months old my hat flew off in the wind. Every time we walk past that street now she will turn to me and say "did you lost your hat?" Again with a diabolical smile. Is this bullying?? 😭🤣

blankcanvas3 · 21/04/2026 21:09

DD3 exclusively wears fancy dress at the moment. Today she’s dressed as Pingu and has only said ‘noot moot’ to me since 6am. I was thrilled when it was bed time. She totally becomes whatever character she is that day.

DD1 can’t say very much but when she says thank you she says ‘thanks love’ 😂

my 2.5 year old calls the radiators ‘radi-heaters’ and it makes me so warm inside (pun intended lol)

My nearly 2 year old calls them radigators - like a cross between a radiator and an alligator 😂

FettleOfKish · 21/04/2026 21:12

Almost 2 year old says ‘Bless You [name]’ when anyone sneezes or coughs. Staying in an Airbnb last night so he was in the same room, I was in the dark scrolling my phone under a blanket hoping he’d dropped off to sleep when I coughed. A little blonde head immediately popped over the top of the cot… ‘Bless You Mama’ then laid back down to sleep.

He’s also recently taken to an extravagant hands in the air shrug when asked something he doesn’t know the answer to. God knows where he’s got that from.

BeanMeUp · 21/04/2026 21:18

My 7 year old came out with 'What the Dickens is that?!" yesterday, no idea where that came from!

KiddyMcKiddly · 21/04/2026 21:20

My DD when aged 1-2 used to crawl into boxes and just lie there waiting to be found. She loved that game.

Kids and boxes… age old tradition of them playing with the box more than the toy. When we moved house our kids were so upset when we collapsed the boxes after we had unpacked. I thought they would be happy to come home to our new house all set up and ready, all their toys ready to be played with… no, just upset that we had put away the boxes.

My daughter does a similar thing in shops where she will run off & hide in clothing rails, and just wait silently to be discovered. Her dad finds it funny, I find it terrifying! Now she gets strapped in a trolley with me 😁

Thedogscollar · 21/04/2026 21:32

@GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf
His Dad was a roofer but now moved onto train maintenance engineering.
He keeps telling me his mate put the wrong roof on again and he's annoyed with him 😂
It's all said with such a serious voice I have to leave the room and come back so he doesn't see me laughing.

My 7 year old has started saying "Cheers babe" when I give her something.

I love this, my 6 and 4 year old say “cheers ears!” When saying thank you 🤣🫣

Maraudingmarauders · 21/04/2026 21:38

DS (2.5) really tickles me when he sees a fly or a bee, he will waft his hand in its direction and go “shoo shoo”.
he will also say “you’re welcome” if i say thank you to him for passing me something,
or doing what ive asked like putting his shoes on.

earshadow · 21/04/2026 21:39

My daughter calls M&S ‘Marks and Spensive’

Chickenhorse · 21/04/2026 21:42

My DD called me MaMaa as soon as she learnt to speak, I spent forever saying say mummy, but no I became MaMaa said in a very posh accent, for quite a few years when she was small. Now she is 21, she calls me Mother also said in a very posh accent but just to annoy me. I guess it’s better than Bro 😁.

I for one believe this should be a thing! We should all cheer when we see the people we like and perhaps ‘Boo’ the people we do not!

When my little boy was about 3, instead of asking ‘how old are you’ he would ask ‘what’s your number’. He asked EVERYONE! It was like having a tiny Joey Tribiani with you at all times! Check out ladies in supermarkets thought he was flirting with them, he was just asking how old they were!

My two also asked “what’s your number” meaning how old are you. They’re teenagers now and reading all sorts of books, including police procedural whereby my DD15 has termed serial killers several killers, which seems more apt.

Mine does too! Marks Expensive!

My son listens to “The Faraway Tree” on his Yoto, so speaks like a kid from the 1950s at times. He said “Good heavens!” Last night.

DD used to love the gocompare jingle when it was the opera guy. We used to play it on YouTube to interrupt terrible 2 year old tantrums
