Do you know people’s phone numbers by heart anymore?

If your mobile phone was to die, and someone gave you a phone so you can ring people, would you know any numbers?

I wouldn’t! Which is crazy because growing up with a landline, I knew my number, both grandparents and even a few friends.

Now I only know my own!!

I lnow dhs by heart. But none of my children's (adults)

TheDellsYoursongNsoul · 17/04/2026 19:37

Apart from my own..no

EmpressaurusKitty · 17/04/2026 19:39

The only numbers I know by heart are mine & the landline ones from when I was a kid. Really weird that they’ve stayed in my head.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 17/04/2026 19:39

No only my own. I don’t even know my home phone number off by heart since we moved 5 years ago (I think it’s unplugged).

(Although I still know my childhood phone number, my best friend’s childhood number, my grandmas, I could probably dredge my first work number out of my memory too)

captainmouthwash · 17/04/2026 19:40

I can list my childhood friends phone numbers from 1995, my own, my grandparents (who have been dead for 20 years), and DH’s. Everyone else’s: pooof!

BogRollBOGOF · 17/04/2026 19:41

DH
My land line
DM
Childline
Going Live/ Live & Kicking Grin

Riapia · 17/04/2026 19:41

Don’t even know my own number now. There again why would I need to? I’m never going ring myself?
I have enough things to remember, any friends I want to talk to their numbers are stored in my phone.

Classinglass · 17/04/2026 19:42

I know my own and my husband’s mobile numbers by heart no-one else’s though - can remember ever landline number from my childhood though 😆

Soubriquet · 17/04/2026 19:43

Sitting here thinking about it, I can still recall both grandparents landlines. A bit useless now as one set is dead, and the other only has my granddad alive and he has a mobile now!

RattlingTin · 17/04/2026 19:44

Mobile - only DH.
Landlines - can recall loads, but only from the 1970s/1980s 👵🏻. I can still remember the numbers for my childhood piano teacher and the milkman!

Bendallbee · 17/04/2026 19:46

I don't know ANY apart from my own and that is only because I've had it since 2004!

I do however remember two primary school friend's landline numbers from the late 80s/early 90s 😅

Oh and two of the reg plates of my mum's cars circa 1990.

I have to keep photos saved of our current cars reg plates so I don't have to run outside to check them 😅

CheeseWisely · 17/04/2026 19:46

I know mine and my DH’s mobile numbers, and probably my Mum’s if I thought hard enough. I know my parents landline although god knows the last time I called it was. Also my Grandparents landline although they’re both long dead. I wish my brain would forget that to make room for something more useful like how to spell receive right the first time.

SabreIsMyFave · 17/04/2026 19:48

Only my own number, and my 2 DC's numbers. Can't quite remember DH's, but I know it ends in 9980. 😆

I do know a few others off by heart, like the GP, the dentist, the town's big hospital, the local Chinese Takeaway, mine and DH's workplace, and 2 friends who have had the same number for 10+ years.

DarmokAndJaladAtTenagra · 17/04/2026 19:53

I could phone:
my home landline
My DHs mobile
My parent's landline
My DHs family home which he lived in until he was 18
Live & kicking

CarolinaLiar · 17/04/2026 19:58

I only know my own mobile number. I even don’t know anyone with a landline.

If I lose my phone, I’m fucked.

Alwaysthesameoldstory · 17/04/2026 20:00

I know my own mobile number but it took me ages to be able to remember it.

And yes like other pp I can remember the land line from when I was a child. That was only 4 digits - actually only 3 because one of them appeared twice in it - so it was very easy to remember..

BarbieKew · 17/04/2026 20:01

I could phone my parents and in-laws landlines and the homes of childhood friends, plus the current mobiles of my husband and two friends.

I made my kids learn my phone number from age 3ish, and occasionally check they still know it several years later - you never know when you might need to ring someone and you haven’t got your phone to hand.

Justletmemoveon · 17/04/2026 20:04

I met a guy a little while ago who I still really like and we got very close, but sadly we couldn’t take things forward. We agreed the only way we’d manage is if we deleted each other’s numbers. Annoyingly, even though several months have passed and I literally only saw his number once, it’s consigned to my memory 😭. It takes so much self-control not to reach out, and I wish I didn’t know it!

MaidMiriam · 17/04/2026 20:05

My own mobile, my husband's mobile, my MIL's landline (same number for around 30 years), my parents' landline (same number since I was a child).

CrushingOnRubies · 17/04/2026 20:06

My mobile number and my DPs landline which they have had since I was about 5 and still have due to having a crappy mobile signal. No one else’s

WhatAMarvelousTune · 17/04/2026 20:12

My own and DH’s.

Lovelydovey · 17/04/2026 20:13

i know mine and my husbands mobile numbers. I also know my work number, the switchboard, security and technology help desks, and my parents and grandparents home phone numbers (deceased 5 and 25 years).

Blondeshavemorefun · 17/04/2026 20:14

My dads and friends home number

dh mob and one other friends as she’s all the four corners

maddiemookins16mum · 17/04/2026 20:16

I’d have to ring our main office number, speak to someone in HR and ask for DH’s number.

Sprogonthetyne · 17/04/2026 20:16

I only know my own, but in fairness all the landline numbers I used to know only had 6 digits (everyone in same area coad) whereas the mobile numbers I'd need to memorise to contact anyone today have 11, which is much harder to remember.
