Do you know people’s phone numbers by heart anymore?

If your mobile phone was to die, and someone gave you a phone so you can ring people, would you know any numbers?

I wouldn’t! Which is crazy because growing up with a landline, I knew my number, both grandparents and even a few friends.

Now I only know my own!!

I could phone
My husband
My parents
Me
My home phone number
Work
The hospital main number- and many extension numbers of depts
My FILs number

I know my primary school best friends number and her mums, the father of my eldest daughter (who I haven’t spoken to in about 5 years 😂) & my mums work mobile. Because they’ve all had the same numbers for as long as I’ve been using a mobile.

So hopefully one of them could help me in an emergency 😂

I only know my own mobile number. I even don’t know anyone with a landline.

If I lose my phone, I’m fucked.

Quite a few people have said this/say this, but do people not have the information on their phone linked to their laptop/computer? Do people not back up to The Cloud, or sync their phone?

All my contacts and my calendar are on my computer/laptop. And my phone number. Etc..... I wouldn't lose any information (or contacts) if I lost my phone.

I am also logged into TikTok, Instagram, Merlin Bird App, FitBit, and some other apps on my laptop/computer. So if I lost my phone, I could recover from it quite well I think. I would go onto my computer and go into 'Find My Phone' and lock the device, and then take the phone number to a new device, (and as I said, I would still have quite a lot of the information I need, including all my contacts, my calendar, and my own phone number...)

Dh
Dd
Mum
MIL
BIL
Parents landline
Work landline

That's about it

magicstar1 · 17/04/2026 20:26

Yes, mine, DH, both my parents, in laws, my brother and a couple of my friends.

GranolaBaker · 17/04/2026 20:27

I could phone my deceased grandparents land line and my childhood home from 1987.

im screwed.

my dc know my mobile off by heart which has saved them many times when their phones have died and they have called me on their friends. I should take a leaf out of their book and learn my DH’s number at least

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 17/04/2026 20:28

DHs mobile - forced myself to learn it after a friend's scary incident.

My parents landline - for their old house.
My Dad's work number - hes been retired a while.
My best mates home phone number - she moved out 30 years ago.

WhatNoRaisins · 17/04/2026 20:30

I don't remember any numbers at all. I do have the important numbers written down on a list in my preppers cupboard.

youalright · 17/04/2026 20:32

Nope id be screwed

rainbowsparkle28 · 17/04/2026 20:32

Literally my own and both parent’s mobiles as they made sure I learnt it off by heart when I was younger (!) and it hasn’t changed. That’s it 🫣

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · 17/04/2026 20:39

I know;
My mobile
DHs mobile
Parents' landline
My childhood landline
My grandparents' landline from my childhood
Hastings Direct.

Alouest · 17/04/2026 20:46

I know:

My mobile
DH's mobile
DD's mobile
One of my brother's mobile
One of my aunt's mobile
Our landline (got rid of it a year ago but somehow burnt into my brain)
My old mobile from about 2006
My home landline from my childhood (age 8-26 - I am now in my fifties)
My maternal grandparents' home landline, long defunct
My parents' landline from 1990-2018

So probably about half and half useful and non-useful!

AnotherName2025 · 17/04/2026 20:56

Yes, a few (still) current useful ones (but all numbers that have been the same for years)

some old ones that are now well out of date.

Annoyingly can't learn new 'would be useful in an emergency' ones.
