First one that comes to mind for me is Nightlife by Green Day. 😵‍💫

OP posts:

I liked Lulu on ‘ relight my fire ‘ with take that. The rest of her songs I don’t like much.
Cilla was the same, but she did well with ‘ anyone who had a heart ‘ , about the only one of hers I do like!

JMSA · 20/04/2026 14:47

The godawful, depressing ‘Handbags and Gladrags.’
In fact, anything by the Stereophonics.

JMSA · 20/04/2026 14:48

And Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.

Living next door to Alice by Smokie 🙉🤮

Oh god, especially if you're from a certain part of the North East and every time it's played everyone roars "Alice!! Who the f* is Alice?!" 😫 (apologies, I used to go in some right sh**holes in that town when I was younger).

I loved the original, but that horrible gimmicky Chubby Brown version has ruined it forever.

The kind of overgrown schoolchildren who mistakenly think they're supremely witty and original will now forever insist on adding that part at top volume, even when the original is played. It's not even a clever addition; it's just puerile shock value.

Yep I think we can both agree on that one! And you're absolutely right about the overgrown schoolchildren- I've heard 40+ year old men singing it. And no, it's not even remotely witty or funny. Are you from the NE yourself by any chance? I despise RCB's humour- sexist, racist and unnecessary vulgar

No - I'm from the Midlands. I agree wholeheartedly with you about RCB, though. He's not bold, groundbreaking or even controversially spiky but with an intelligent point to make; he just says nasty, sweary, base things that a certain demographic seem to enjoy. I prefer my comedians to be funny and witty.

Anything by U2 or UB40 makes me so cross have to leave the room much to my colleagues amusements, rats in the kitchen infuriates me

I feel like this about Craig David and Robbie Williams. Have to leave the room.

I love this thread!

Omg so he was grooming her??

Not sure. She had a BF (of a similar age to her) but even her family couldn’t see that it was really bloody weird how close they were.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 21/04/2026 09:36

Can I add an extremely specific kind of song to the list - done by various artists?

ANY song where a major part of the lyrics just consists of reeling off all of the days of the week. Craig David, Pet Shop Boys, The Cure, even the normally-brilliant ELO - just for a very few. Pop tracks supposedly aimed at adults and teenagers that just sound like little teaching songs for toddlers!

Also, along a similar-ish theme, The Name Game and The Clapping Song by Shirley Ellis. The sound, production values and her vocals were top notch; it's just the silly nursery rhyme-style lyrics.

TheDellsYoursongNsoul · 21/04/2026 10:43

@AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf The Clapping song isn't great are you familiar with these two by Shirley Ellis.
Nitty Gritty
Soul Time.

TessTickle0 · 21/04/2026 14:56

I agree with quite a few already mentioned.
Mine that haven't been said before are-
Drinking in LA by bran van 3000(or something)
and that god awful song about "throw those curtains wide" I dnt know who sings it,for a long time i thought it was bob the builder lol.
Anyway his voice really winds me up and I have to.turn it off.

Ahhh I can’t BEAR this song either thank you for this!

Couldn’t watch the Office because of it.

examworries2026 · 21/04/2026 21:49

I agree with whoever said Florence version of You got the love. The Candi Staton version is sublime.

I was going to say young at heart but someone’s already said that. Can’t stand that song!

Weirdly I love the band aid song 🙈 yes I know very problematic lyrics and sentiment but I just think it’s a great tune 🙈 against my better music snob judgement

Bob the Builder 😂 It's by Elbow.

For at least ten years, I thought that Young at Heart was called Young Emma.

LightDrizzle · 21/04/2026 23:55

Sweet Caroline, Mustang Sally, Tiger Feet - my husband has 8 years on me and belonged to a club with an older average age and these were dinner dance stalwarts.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one to think John Lennon’s Imagine is an annoying pile of shite, a lot of people react as though you’ve confessed to enjoying torturing kittens.

I feel I should appreciate Jools Holland as I’m sure he’s very gifted but I’d rather pour molten lead into my ears than listen to him for more than a couple of minutes.

Like most of the world I find the Celine Dion Titanic sing unbearable but that’s hardly controversial.

The Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. Who wants someone in love with your body or just the "shape of you"? Is that supposed to be charming or romantic? Yuck 🤮

Edited

Oh God yes! “…and now my bedsheets smell like you …” 🤮

LightDrizzle · 22/04/2026 00:03

OnSecondThoughts · 16/04/2026 20:23

Seconded: Mull of Kintyre. McCartney (as well as Lennon) churned out some really awful rubbish post-Beatles (although they both also did some good stuff).

Frog Chorus though?!

realsavagelike · 22/04/2026 03:04

What's Going On? 4 Non Blondes

TessTickle0 · 22/04/2026 08:05

@realsavagelike we were on holiday recently and the restaurant had this song playing in the background..the group at the next table all joined in loudly with the chorus.
Everytime I hear it it reminds me from the scene in sense8 where they all sing it together.
I like it 😆

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 22/04/2026 08:07

Uptown Girl by Billy Joel, can’t stand it.
Come on Eileen, overplayed and rapey.
All Right Now, again overplayed and it just goes on and on.

Thanks a lot for asking. I knew Nitty Gritty but I just listened to Soul Time for the first time, now you mentioned it.

I like them both, but annoyingly, the songs with the silly lyrics about mama not buying you toys and rhyming people's names with 'banana' have (imho) the much stronger tunes!

JuliettaCaeser · 22/04/2026 10:57

Also that Nirvana song - as a teen the boys would get totally over excited on the dance floor and jump around without a thought to their strength. One petite friend got her foot broken because of the effect of that song on idiot teen boys 🙄

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 22/04/2026 11:05

Not that you hear it very often at all nowadays, but although I used to love it as a fun, novelty song as an innocent child, Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep is actually very dark and horrible. How bizarre to write a song about child abandonment and neglect and then set it to a jaunty party tune!

the80sweregreat · 22/04/2026 11:07

What does Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep mean though ? What’s it meant to be saying about the children being abandoned?
