First one that comes to mind for me is Nightlife by Green Day. 😵‍💫

Five pages in and I’ve not yet seen Get What You Give by the New Radicals. I absolutely cannot stand this song and want to rip my own head off whenever I hear it.

PomegranateVase · 17/04/2026 00:01

Cotton Eye Joe.
Don’tcha - Pussycat Dolls
These Words - Natasha Bedingfield.

PomegranateVase · 17/04/2026 00:02

Oh and that bloody awful buttercup song people always seem to play at parties - ‘Why do you build me up buttercup’ 🤮🤮🤮

TheDellsYoursongNsoul · 17/04/2026 00:09

Should be 'shut the fuck up butter cup'
An episode of come dine with me
Had the singer of that song as her entertainment.
Cringey AF.

Nofeckingway · 17/04/2026 00:10

I Dreamed a Dream - dreary and too long
I Closed My Eyes from Joseph Technicolor etc..
Maggie May or anything really by Rid Stewart
Don't Stop Believing
These all are the ones that get going at the end of the night when nobody wants to go home except me .

Swiftmovingclouds · 17/04/2026 00:12

Year of the Cat - Al Stewart.
Aargh. The long whiny breathy way he sings 'caaaat' makes me want to chuck the radio on the floor.

ruethewhirl · 17/04/2026 00:30

Wasn't Expecting That. The lyrics are so bloody depressing!

And 'Life' by Des'ree. If you have to stoop to rhyming 'ghost' with 'toast', maybe just don't bother writing the song in the first place.

My personal hatred of this song comes from the fact that they are saying that its ok to be fat (which of course it is) but is so disparaging of being thin. "The anorexic chicks, the model six" is so derogatory and shaming. Its fucking awful.

I remember hearing it, for the first time after I got my official anorexia diagnosis in my 40's, and I had to pull over as I was crying so much from shame. I am now recovered (mainly) but I still wont have it on in my hearing.

And someone needs to tell Paul Heaton that acting like an angst ridden student when you are 60+ isnt edgy, its fucking sad.

Edited

Sorry to hear it had such a horrible impact on you. I can understand why and glad to read you are recovering well

agree about Paul Heaton 😆

BeaLola · 17/04/2026 00:37

Big Yellow Taxi

HRTQueen · 17/04/2026 00:40

Baker Street Gerry Rafferty

it’s just awful I have to leave the room if it comes on the radio as I get the rage 😡

Thank you. Its been described to me as an addiction....I wont ever lose the need to go back to it but I can decide not to. I would say that its certainly true for me. But that song, at that time......it was fucking brutal.

Paul Heaton in his little zip up anorak trying to be everyone's friend by buying them a drink on his 60th....mate, really?!

Busted and McFly did a great version of this, worth a listen!

Loving You by Minnie Ripperton - hate it with a vengeance

Apparently, if you Shazam a fax machine, it comes up with Minnie Riperton Grin

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 17/04/2026 00:55

Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile. I hate that so much - and so many radio stations play it so very often. I don't know why Steve Harley sang it so badly, because he had a really good voice; he recorded a version of Phantom Of The Opera with Sarah Brightman and, although his voice was obviously not comparable in any way to hers, he did a really good job of it.

Anything by Billy Idol or Iggy Pop.

Living next door to Alice by Smokie 🙉🤮

I used to love the original, but that horrible sweary version spoiled it forever. Even if you play the original song, there will still be at least one idiot who insists on adding the Chubby Brown bits, and thinking they're being really funny and astute.

PersephoneSmith · 17/04/2026 01:04

I hate the one ‘I should have known better to lie to one as beautiful as you’
awful song, even before you consider the lyrics mean it’s fine to lie to an ugly bird but a beautiful one obviously deserves more respect 😡

Back to the Sweet Caroline and FToNY issue.

Take a good song and ruin it!

I disagree.

I think it means that "I didnt know what I had, I took you for granted and lost you." Not about looks but about the full package, a beautiful heart and soul.

Anything sang by Michael Bublé shudder

Reflex by Duran Duran. “Whyyyyy don’t you use it”. They can fuck right off

Along with all of his other abhorrences, have you heard Christmas Sweater by Michael Buble? It's an old song, but it should most definitely have stayed in the past. It sounds all fluffy, festive and trivial on the surface, but's basically about him coercing his wife/girlfriend in a really nasty way: telling her repeatedly that she is plain wrong to not do what he insists she must do.

I agree with this. It's a really beautiful, heartfelt song where he realises and acknowledges just how stupid and selfish he's been and what he's lost. Sadly, he completely ruins the sentiment as soon as he steps on the upturned plug!

Common People- Pulp.
My then boyfriend at uni thought it summed up me as I went to private school and the lyric ' coachroaches on the wall if your father he could stop it all' really annoyed him. But if it actually had happened my df would have as he cared as would I when dd goes to uni. Its not a brag but common sense whether it's rentokill or anything else.
It really annoys me

I don't think it's really about whether your dad would help you with a cockroach infestation. It's about young people from wealthy families who go through a phase of "slumming it" especially while they're at university, because they think working class culture is cool (or they just want a novel experience). They will never understand what it feels like to be poor and have few options in life, as they know full well that as soon as they get sick of their grotty student shared house, mummy and daddy will arrange their move to bijou accommodation in a safe, affluent neighbourhood.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/04/2026 02:11

I love Common People it’s a great song. I met former public school pupils at university having gone to a state school myself and some of them were so utterly clueless it blew my mind. They kind of deserved that song.

My detested song is Loveshack. Hate everything about it and reminds me of being dumped when I was 17.

Also any misogynistic song with sexually explicit lyrics can get in the bin too. No you’re not edgy mate just gross.

Tiptoe through the tulips gives me the heebie-jeebies! I can't stand it but also can't stop singing it as soon as I think of it.

Also, anything Robbie Williams sings, I find him intensely irritating

You’re definitely onto something with ‘Tiptoe through the tulips’. Tiny Tim died while singing it live on stage. Heart attack if I recall correctly.

It’s also used in an awful lot of horror films! Guess the falsetto fuels the tension!

JeremiaBoogle · 17/04/2026 06:04

Yellow Submarine by the Beatles.

Hate everything about it.

Spinning around - Kylie
China in your hand - T' pau
Shout - Lulu
