Most ridiculous, nonsensical rules at your DC’s school

Mine is no baseball caps or sunglasses, despite the fact that the school field and playground have no shade.

Whats yours?

Mine is from 40 years ago when I was at school.
My school - kilt pins are to worn on the kilt at all times, to keep the folds of the kilt together and stop it flapping open when windy.
My friends school- non uniform school, but no kilt pins allowed as they could be used as a weapon.

It made the regional TV news when a girl from the other school was excluded for wearing a kilt and kilt pin.

Ex teacher.

my school introduced school hoodies which honestly I loved. So did the kids. Especially in winter.

then we got a new head who though they looked sloppy and nobody was allowed to wear them anymore, staff or students.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 16/04/2026 16:07

Not so much a silly rule, as I understand why they implemented it, but a rule that took an insane amount of man power to enforce at my school was the one way system. Because we were all horrible little scruffs who shoved one another so much, they had to implement a one way system in the halls. We had teachers basically stood along the walls enforcing it. It must have been such a ball ache for them.

At my kids school now (it’s much posher) they’re basically the lunch box police. Very strict on what you can and can’t have and it has to be “healthy”. I used to give them some slices of cold pizza on a Friday because that’s what my mum used to give us as a treat - apparently not allowed. Me and DH came to get them together that day and basically got told off, it felt like getting told off at school lol.

At my school we had no uniform for sixth form but we weren’t allowed to wear blue denim. It was totally nonsensical - you could wear blue cotton/wool etc, and you could wear black/white etc denim, but for some reason blue denim was totally forbidden.

When the whole school had non-uniform days you’d have sixth formers paying £1 to be allowed to wear their blue denim for the day.

I never understand this, they often use the excuse that it's distracting, but it's really not.

Our school is pretty chill and doesn't have this rule. The one that annoys my DD, you must change out of PE kit to go home at the end of the day.

It is very silly, particularly as the school allows things like trainers as footwear (as long as it's black), make-up and nail polish and even dyed hair, as long as it's "natural" colours. The mind boggles.

DD was once told off because a teacher saw her socks were white - she was wearing trousers Confused there are no rules for socks in the uniform policy though!

ETA: there isn't even a rule for socks/tights with skirts, and even the skirt length rule is quite sensible...

Statsquestion1 · 16/04/2026 16:25

They actually don’t have any tbh.
Thank god!

ainsleysanob · 16/04/2026 16:28

In blazing hot weather our children are allowed to go to school without wearing their blazer or tie BUT they must carry them in their hand, not in their bags, at all times.

Based on the fact that I have brain in my head, we ignore this rule and leave them at home!

Sounds like your son's school is run by Big Melanoma lmao

Pupils not allowed to wear the school top and a coat there has to be a jumper as well even if it a warmer day but rainy

Walk with your hands behind your backs at all time in school.

A new head tried to introduce this at my DC primary school, they called it 'The Superwalk'. Yuk

AutumnLover1990 · 16/04/2026 16:32

No coats on as soon as you step inside the school doors.

KermitTheToad · 16/04/2026 16:32

Apparently not allowed to be seen wearing earbuds on the way in/home from school if uniform is identifiable.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 16/04/2026 16:34

“It’s LUNCHTIME not laughing time”…… (not from teachers)

Ohthatsabitshit · 16/04/2026 16:35

My daughters, so only a few years ago. No standing up in the classroom in break time. Children must be seated at all times.

At a different school, you must wear a poppy for Remembrance Day.

Blazer on at all times until HT declares it shirt sleeves. Then blazer off, sleeves folded back three times.

In my own primary school, no running in the playground.

My dd17’s Secondary school here in Ireland..
Only one pair of stud earrings.
No nail polish. Why not?? What difference can it possibly make to anyone?
No hair colour/hi-lights.
No tan. (Fighting a losing battle with this one!)
Skirt to a certain point of the knee. This is checked daily.
No coffee can be brought in.

laughing at no coffee 😂 guess it’s a gateway drug 😆

CDTC · 16/04/2026 16:46

They weren't allowed out in sleet (warmish day no ice anywhere) but were in almost storm force winds.

They're also not allowed to play tag anymore because it's dangerous.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 16/04/2026 16:51

Our primary is mostly quite sensible but they are only allowed healthy snacks at break (fine). However, crisps and/or a small biscuit are fine at lunch but you can’t eat them out of your lunch box at break. Clearly less bad for you between 1200 and 1300.

Actually, the rules state no crisps but verbally they seem to be allowed. I get annoyed as they have healthy snack policies but a lot of the parents don’t stick to them, and school mostly don’t enforce them, so then I end up being the bad guy explaining that school ask us not to send in crisps even if X has them every day…..

tnorfotkcab · 16/04/2026 16:56

Girls can wear trousers, but not flared trousers 🤔

Foxysocks456 · 16/04/2026 17:02

Can't stay inside if it's raining at break time or lunch time.

1000 kids are to remain outdoors under a small wooden gazebo if it rains

Coats must be stored in lockers only
no coats to be worn at all inside.
(Lockers are far away in a basement.
Not everyone has one and they're expensive to hire)

Must not show up to class wet

😬

So why do people send their DC to such bizarre institutions? There are two secondary schools near us. We chose the one with the sensible head and the decent uniform rules. Friends chose the other school and have spent the last 4 years moaning about the uniform policy there. I always wonder why!

Ours is the most lenient out of the four local secondaries to us. It's considered sensible and friendly 🫠

It's absolutely bonkers.

SomethingSScintillating · 16/04/2026 17:06

Blazers on even in heat waves

BillieWiper · 16/04/2026 17:07

I remember one from my posh school. They said you weren't allowed to eat while wearing uniform outdoors?! Like on your way to or from school??

Because for most parents there is no choice! They are all bonkers these days. Other than to not send them at all. Why do you think the numbers being home educated has increased?
