How do people who change clothes often manage when packing for holidays?

I often see people on here who say they change pyjamas daily and same with bras or each all outer wear after one wear. Same with people who change clothes when they come home and won't sit on a bed in outdoor clothes. How do you manage on holiday?

I only ask as I like to change my pyjamas after every two nights and I'm going on holiday for almost three weeks soon. we have an apartment with a washing machine half way through the holiday. I can wash undies by hand but not pyjamas. I won't be able to get them dry.

Do people who change clothes a lot do a lot of washing on holiday or just lower their standards?

For a 2 week holiday I’d take 3 bras maximum. None would be washed.

LittleEmily · 17/04/2026 02:58

I just do a quick wash halfway through the trip.I think it isn't necessary to overthink it on holiday.

When you are travelling for 3 months, you tend to move around a lot. Believe me, trying to lug a huge heavy case up steps because there's no other way is not a good look . . .

I do think travelling for long periods and having to carry everything in a backpack makes you realise how little you need. I’m a light packer for this reason and you’d probably see me in the same clothes more than once.

iamnotalemon · 17/04/2026 05:55

I don’t even own 15 bras!

Paaseitjes · 17/04/2026 07:31

How about looking at things that dry quicker than cotton. Linen had a similar feel, or sports t-shirts are mega fast drying and might actually make you less sweaty. The same goes for during the day. Cotton is breathable-ish, but not great for sweat because once it gets wet it stays wet and smells.

hahabahbag · 17/04/2026 07:36

I have 3 days worth of clothes, rewear, days clothes and evening clothes, 7 pairs underwear and 2 bras, don’t do pj’s and a tube of concentrated hand soap. Going for a month - road trip so it’s a case of a routine of washing as soon as you get into your room a few bits. Will have a washing machine at one location so can get the jeans washed plus fleeces etc and will find a commercial laundrette if needed

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/04/2026 07:43

I have some lightweight PJs which I always take on holiday. I’m happy to handwash them though. Why can’t you handwash them?

I guess if you have an apartment and are staying put for a few weeks you can easily do washing. That makes sense. We are doing a road trip and moving on every 2/3 days and as far as I am aware we only have one place with a washing machine half way through. I guess I will have to lower my standards and do three nights in my pyjamas. I run very warm at night and they get a bit sweaty though.

In that case could you sleep naked and take a thin robe to put on when you get up? Your sheets will be fresh every couple of nights.

bunnyvsmonkey · 17/04/2026 07:50

My family are messy. My DC can't eat one meal without ruining clothes. When we are away we stay with a washing machine and I'll typically do a wash a day. If we stay in a hotel I end up washing stuff in the sink or bath.

Redhairandhottubs · 17/04/2026 08:09

I am one of these people who like to change often. It’s a sensory thing, I think. I just can’t wear something that’s been worn outside or slept in more than once. Last year we stayed in an Airbnb with a washing machine which was a game changer! I know not everyone wants to wash on holiday but it doesn’t bother me at all (I’m very odd in that I quite like laundry and find it soothing 🤣). We’re doing the same this year, it means I can take less clothes but always have something clean to change into.

No nakedness in bed here! I've never ever slept naked. The whole idea of it horrifies me.

I would love to know what you packed in your teeny tiny under seat bag for a weeks holiday and you still had room to bring a few things back.
I’m an overpacker who would love to be more like you @mindutopia For me it’s the shoes. I always pack too many 😀

Sports type shirts make me damp immediately and I hate how they feel. I'm cotton all the way for everything. I also wear wide legged linen trousers in the heat. I love them. I've got to the age of 63 now knowing exactly the fabrics I like to wear and which feel good. It's just the pyjama issue that was confounding me but I now think I will buy some cheap, thin cotton nighties.

What sort of sports shirts? Technology has changed a lot in 20 years and real sports shirts are different to cheap fashion ones. Polo's or cheap synthetics are a disaster. Marathon running shirts keep you cool and dry. They can be ugly though! Desert weight hiking shirts are good too

shuffleofftobuffalo · 17/04/2026 08:31

I just take everything plus the kitchen sink, and consider packing the air fryer. If I’m away for two weeks I get an apartment and I want all my usual stuff with me regardless of it meaning we have 100 bags with us!

We’ve just done a week city break in Europe tho and packed very restrained - a lot of rewearing clothes which is fine as the weather isn’t sweaty. I always take enough underwear for fresh every day tho, wash bras (never travel without my little laundry kit - laundry sheets are a blessing!)

Ah well that's no good then. Shame as you would save a lot of hassle on this holiday.

OMG 15 bras for 2 weeks! Travelling around like a small branch of M&S

I now know when I am side eyeing someone on the train or at the hotel with two suitcases almost as big as they are what they are packing!

We don't have a car and prety much always travel to and from airports and train staions on foot or by public transport. It focusses the mind in terms of packing.

Squirrelchops1 · 17/04/2026 08:45

Those thay say they're not going to spend their holiday washing underwear...how long does it take? I will wash a couple of pairs of knickers whilst having a shower. It's only like lathering up a flannel or similar then rinsing through. It takes seconds.
Mind you, my partner does say I have an obsession with washing my pants.

I think the reason is, I once saw someone's suitcase had burst open on the carousel and am haunted by the unwashed knickers....

DuskOPorter · 17/04/2026 08:48

I’m this person because we get very sweaty on holiday walking around exploring in the heat. I do loads of laundry and then feel beyond excited that it dries outdoors which we can never do at home. I’d say I often end up changing 3 times per day, including jammies, and because of being sweaty I need that.

I have never taken more than one suitcase for a two week holiday and always manage to fit everything in without a problem. I agree with previous posters that it doesn’t take long to wash a couple of pairs of knickers, but I would also then wash the matching bra, and I just find it easier to take enough underwear with me so that I don’t have to bother washing whilst Im away. We’ve been away for a month at a time in the past and managed with just hand luggage, but it’s not something I would choose to do nowadays.

For a 14 night holiday I take 7 day and 7 night outfits and mix/match. Plus a coming home outfit, 14 pairs of socks as tend to wear trainers when we go for a walk, 28 pairs of pants as I shower before dinner.

I try and pack as many old/faded pants/socks as possible and bin them before coming home!

I don’t even own 28 pairs of pants!

why don’t you just hand wash some?

They do keep cool and dry but they honk ,I say that as someone who washes a lot of gym gear every week 🤣

I know this wasn’t directed at the OP but I can’t sleep naked either incase a burglar breaks in and I’m vulnerable.
