How do people who change clothes often manage when packing for holidays?

I often see people on here who say they change pyjamas daily and same with bras or each all outer wear after one wear. Same with people who change clothes when they come home and won't sit on a bed in outdoor clothes. How do you manage on holiday?

I only ask as I like to change my pyjamas after every two nights and I'm going on holiday for almost three weeks soon. we have an apartment with a washing machine half way through the holiday. I can wash undies by hand but not pyjamas. I won't be able to get them dry.

Do people who change clothes a lot do a lot of washing on holiday or just lower their standards?

In Canada I’m sure laundrettes would be available? Plan a stop somewhere with one and wash and dry your clothes. For 3 weeks you’re going to have a bit more than just pjs to wash anyway

VividDeer · 16/04/2026 13:38

Sleep baked, pj's for breakfast 😅

Disposable undies & socks and cheap single use PJs on Temu!

For me, it's minimising what I have to wash when I return.

What a waste.

I guess if you have an apartment and are staying put for a few weeks you can easily do washing. That makes sense. We are doing a road trip and moving on every 2/3 days and as far as I am aware we only have one place with a washing machine half way through. I guess I will have to lower my standards and do three nights in my pyjamas. I run very warm at night and they get a bit sweaty though.

Wear less to bed.

That would depend if any of our accommodation was heated by radiators and if it was cold enough to have them on. I have no idea about this.

We are going on a road trip mid May in Canada taking in city, lakes, wine areas and mountains. I will have no idea of the weather until nearer the time and I think there will be a lot of variation depending on where we are.

I am visiting my daughter in Canada end of may and two weeks into june. Lived in Canada for many years , you will not find any radiators in homes. What you will find is laudromats. There are some in every city/town. Coin operated oversize machines, lots with a cafe attached. Just pop in when you have a full load to do, throw it in wash, go have a tea or coffee, come back and put in the dryer. They are alot faster than home machines. Also you can buy individual washing powder and fabric softner from vending machine in most of them

I'm fine with the stop half way for washing the rest of our stuff. It's just the jammies that I was wondering about.

For day - Merino t shirts should last more than a day, they wick well and don’t smell like cotton can. Appreciate more expensive but Decathlon and Mountain Warehouse sell cheaply. I sleep in one with pants. Much less bulky than PJs.

Changename12 · 16/04/2026 14:03

Hotel laundry. It comes back beautifully ironed. I hand wash underwear under the shower when I shower myself.
I agree skirts can do a couple of wears but in a hot climate tops definitely only once.

Dontbesaft · 16/04/2026 14:12

Put your wardrobe requirements and trip into Chat GTP. It gave me a day by day breakdown of what to wear from Peru (v warm) to edge of the Antarctic over a month. Worked really well. Also had to move on every couple of days, we also needed a couple of posh outfits.
our trip included 9 flights with different luggage allowances so it was fiddly but Chat GTP was excellent

Comefromaway · 16/04/2026 14:13

I've never been on holiday for longer than 8 days but I would simply pack enough clothes to last me.. There is no way I would ever be hand washing underwear.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/04/2026 14:15

In hot climates Uniqlo AIRism vests are a god send. Stop your tops from getting sweaty and you can rinse them out and dry them in a very short time.

So we’re doing a similar trip this year and I’m also a committed PJ wearer. I stretch my usual 3 nights per pair to 4/5 nights. I also make sure I take my lightest pair of shorts/T shirt PJs, rather than anything long so they take up less room. We’re going for 19 nights so I will make 5 pairs work!

I will also take clean knickers and T shirts for each day, bras do get reworn. Leggings mainly for bottom half as we do a lot of hiking and T shirts will be lightweight sweatwicking fabric. Part of our trip is a cruise so will also add a couple of pairs jeans and a nice dress so to wear on the ship. Couple of sets of running clothes too, though will usually rewear a T shirt from a previous day and retire it to laundry afterwards. I’m fairly light on shoes- hiking shoes and coat worn onto plane, pair of trainers and Birkenstocks go into the case. Add a couple of warm layers to top of case. It all fits into one case under 23kg. As this trip requires a few warm layers, I might need to add them to DH’s case for space, for a warmer trip, not required.

We don’t do laundry on our holidays as we’re moving location every 2/3 days and busy all day! I’m baffled by people who pack so light that they are constantly doing laundry on holiday! My plane ticket includes 23kg so I use it all in order to not do washing!

When you are travelling for 3 months, you tend to move around a lot. Believe me, trying to lug a huge heavy case up steps because there's no other way is not a good look . . .

If Im going away for two weeks then i expect to fill a large case with my things. I pack 15 bras and pairs of knickers, and make do with 7 pairs of pyjamas. I don’t generally do washing on holiday and choose the clothes Im taking very carefully, and try to choose things that dont really need ironing. For two weeks I would take around 20 tops, maybe five dresses, seven pairs of trousers/ shorts, and a couple of cardigans. But we’ve only been to hot destinations for a very long time, so haven’t had to worry about packing bulky things as well.

You take 15 bras!!!???
I only have about 4 bras, 2 favourites that get worn 90% of the time, then 2 less liked that get worn if the wash isn't done in time!!

On a week's holiday I'd wear one (clean on) and take another. If possible I'd wash the first one after a few days

LadyVioletBridgerton · 16/04/2026 15:03

I used the laundry for the first time ever on our holiday when we went to Disneyworld last year. It was great. Just chucked it in, went to the pool and then collected it when it was down. Really cut down on the washing when we got home. I’m definitely going to do that next time as it only took about 10 mins out of my holiday in total.

eggsandsourdough · 16/04/2026 15:26

Oh god i think everyone would hate me.

2 week holiday and i will have 10 bikinis, 10 day coverups, 14 dresses/outfits for night and about..... 56 thongs 😂

3DDs ( all under 12) are the same

Husband takes about 20 of everything

KeeleyJ · 16/04/2026 15:43

ApolloandDaphne · 16/04/2026 11:46

I don't own 28 pairs of pants!

I have loads but tend to wear the same few pairs 😂.

I have a box of 'pretty' ones under the bed as well that are like cheese wire and I have no intention of ever wearing them again 😂.

ohtowinthelottery · 16/04/2026 15:43

I did 5 weeks interrailing with just a rucksack. We booked accomodation at least twice a week with a washing machine. I managed to turn laundry around in 12 hours at one overnight stop - which fortunately had a washer dryer. It's all in the planning.

somanythingssolittletime · 16/04/2026 16:08

Buy as many underwear as you will need for the full trip and look up laundrettes along the way for pyjamas and rest of clothes

ultracynic · 16/04/2026 16:57

For two weeks I’d take 8 knickers and 3 bras and wash them once. Other than that I mainly stick to dresses (6 or 7, some worn twice) and flip flops, maybe a couple of skirts and tops to mix and match, and a cardi or two if it’ll be chilly at night.

I travel in linen cargos, vest top, zip up hoodie and trainers. I’m not a very sweaty person even in high temps so unless I spill food nothing else gets washed until I’m home.

How and why with the RyanAir bags?
We just went for a weekend away my under seat bag which was exact measurements had trainers, hairdryer, purse, scarf, gloves, kindle, phone, chargers, medication, passport and water bottle. There was barely any room for the crisps and mints I bought at the airport!

Easy, don't bring extra shoes or a hairdryer or a water bottle. Then the will be space for clothes.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/04/2026 10:41

I know someone who literally takes all the clothes they think they’ll need, no washing. Usually new! Pays extra for hold luggage.

I take about 4 outfits, but more underwear, have wash soap.

I take all the clothes I need but in the standard allowance.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 16/04/2026 17:16

I don't think I've ever maxed out the allowance though. I got pretty close when it was 20kg, I've had 19kg.

Yes of course - Im not wasting my holiday washing underwear!
