Should we be doing anything practical to prepare for war?

Should we be doing anything to prep for war? Not sure we can do much? But scared as a country we are so unprepared.

OP posts:

Nope

CleanSkin · 14/04/2026 21:57

I have a cupboard full of long-life food. Initially it was for Brexit, then Covid, now War. It is, of course, woefully inadequate for anyone but a carb-loving, tinned food addict with no pets nor desire for cleanliness or treats, however it makes me feel less out of control.

Same!
Also comes in useful when you realise you've run out of tinned tomatoes.
I think it's common sense to have a little stash of essentials, surely?

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/04/2026 22:15

No

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 14/04/2026 22:18

I bought an extra pack of loo roll this week, it is now stored with my bulk packs of baked beans, Diet Coke and tea bag’s.

curious79 · 14/04/2026 22:19

Learn to garden / start gardening and plant fruit trees if you have outdoors space

ShakyBake · 14/04/2026 22:32

My old neighbour has renevented their Anderson shelter, spent about 5k on it and I seen it the other day. They are practicing by staying in it 1 night per week increasing to 5 by end of the year.

WhisperingShadowsStoptheworldiwannagetoffNSOUl · 14/04/2026 22:35

Another no.

marsal · 14/04/2026 22:43

Not to prepare for war itself but to prepare for world disruption. We are planting much more this year and my pantry is full and will stay stocked up. We are putting in another log burner for the winter.

Sweetbeansandmochi · 14/04/2026 22:43

Yes.
Most likely scenario is not bombs but some sort of planned disruption.

You need to think along the lines of electricity/water/gas/ (internet) out. What will you need to keep your household going for 5 days. As it about 5 days for utilities the roll out of their emergency plans.

5 days of water
5 days of food
Wind up radio
You can get these small solar panels to charge your phone off Amazon
Some cash

What do you need to cook?

I have a gas barbecue and a wood burner.

I was at a party and speaking to a lady in the air force and she told me to sort these things out and that we all need to plan for resilience.

marsal · 14/04/2026 23:00

I have a jackery solar generator. It proved very valuable when we had a power cut a few weeks ago. Kept the freezer and the internet running

Are you being serious?

rockstarshoes · 14/04/2026 23:09

I would make sure you have a torch with batteries, wind up radio, keep a power pack for your phone fully charged. 5 days worth of any essential medication on hand plus some long life food as above & maybe some bottled water!

Never mind a a new war the current situation with Iran could result in the lights going out - so prepare for that!

My Brexit Cupboard turned into my Covid Cupboard! 🤣

Seriously?
Okay I’m not doing anything, no. Not out of an act of rebellion but because once it starts, where does it end? Probably with this sort of carry on. Nuts behaviour imo.

chattyness · 14/04/2026 23:30

We've always been well stocked up so that we don't have to panic buy as we live a lot of miles away from the nearest city and during Winter time travelling can be hazardous and roads can be closed down for days. Also the small shops we do have are quickly emptied by panic buyers and then if the roads are closed they can't restock.

It doesn't hurt to have some back up to give you a cushion to fall back on. We've got tinned food, frozen food, dry food, long life food, dog food, toiletries, medications, laundry and cleaning supplies. We also have a camping gas ring, some cans of camping gas for that so we can cook & make tea etc and candles in case of power cuts.

Just buy some extras here and there with your weekly shop and build up a stock cupboard slowly so you don't have to worry or rush out and panic buy if the time ever comes. We were so thankful to not be stuck in the covid queues , because out of a lifelong we were already well prepared.

Huh?

Eclipser · 14/04/2026 23:36

We should be putting immense pressure on our leaders to pull us out of this trajectory. Did we really learn nothing from our grandparents?

War should be unacceptable, unthinkable. And only a few years ago it was. But the tone is changing. The public discourse is no longer “wtf!?” but “when?” because we’re being groomed to accept it as inevitable.

It isn’t.

Tiptopflipflop · 14/04/2026 23:50

Lots of people mocked my Brexit stockpile. Then when covid hit and I didn't need to go to the supermarket until all the silliness had died down they were all very jealous of my supplies.

I've got a bit lax so have topped mine up. I also have about a week's worth of water, a gas barbecue, solar powered phone chargers, charged battery packs etc. No desire to live off grid in a post-apocolyptic world, but figure it is worth having enough for a week or so to let contingency plans kick in.

Needhelp101 · 15/04/2026 00:23

I think we've been going through so many 'events ' that it's just become second nature to me to prep a bit. Another tin and packet of pasta when you're doing the weekly shop. Ordering a big pack of loo roll from Amazon. Candles. Big bottle of water. Extra pack of painkillers.

This is the opposite of panic buying.

Just realised I bought a solar wind up radio, which I'd forgotten about.

Now, all I need is a cricket bat. IYKYK.

Camouflage is in fashion on the high street right now, so good time to stock up.

Mischance · 15/04/2026 08:45

My worry is that my very dear and joyous teenage GC might get called up.
I look at them sometimes and remind myself that young people like this were canon fodder in two world wars. These wonderful young people on the verge of adulthood and full of ideas and dreams.
And I think about similar young people in other countries who are being forced to fight right now.
What a strange thing human nature is.

Ginmonkeyagain · 15/04/2026 08:46

Ha ha! I live on a two bed flat. Wbere the fuck am I meant to keep five days worth of water.

We are not much different to chimpanzees who are aggressive and territorial creatures. While they spend most of their time socialising and grooming, they can be naturally violent and engage in intergroup conflicts with lethal, targeted outcomes 🐒🐵

It's clearly easier if you have the space but most European countries advise all citizens to have emergency supplies to last them at least a few days. Including our country (which advises food water and other emergency supplies enough that you can be self sufficient for at least 72 hours). For some bizarre reason the UK government then decides to keep the advice hidden away (presumably so they can say "well we did tell you to prepare") without causing people to panic buy.

Anything you can stock up will be helpful in an emergency situation. Nobody is saying build a bunker or stay up at night worrying about conscription but things like attacks on our banking system and power/water supply are very real threats that our country is already dealing with on a very regular basis.
