Should we be doing anything practical to prepare for war?

Should we be doing anything to prep for war? Not sure we can do much? But scared as a country we are so unprepared.

The thing with tinned food is you should only buy what you like and use all the time& then you can keep rotating your stock and you won't get any out of date or rusting problems.

We had a 3 hour power cut this morning and as we're all electric I was really grateful for our little gas stove as getting up without a cup of tea is miserable and it also meant I could make a hot water bottle for my husband who is not well atm and is feeling the cold.

Oh this thread just reminded me of dog food so thank you! I hadn't remembered them (feel guilty) and they only eat one type of food.

Its the best apporoch to life.
Why worry ourself over something that has not happened may never happen, might happen.

Yes, that is palpably ridiculous.

If society collapses to the point whereby we're back to bartering, then it's going to be lawless and chaotic, so barter ceases to be relevant since it'll be straight "might is right" and the stronger will simply take your barter goods from you, and maybe give you a kick up the arse if you are lucky.

Uhmmm, I regularly swap home made jams and veggies for eggs with a neighbour. Most years I send a trailer of cooking apples to a local rare breed pig farmer in return for 5kg home made sausages.
I stack windfall apples by the gate for people to help themselves, and regularly find churney or an apple pie on the door step.
Barter is alive & well where I live.😊

LostThestral · 16/04/2026 15:44

yes - my plan is to absolutely enjoy my life as it is in case it doesn't last

Society obviously hasn't collapsed into lawlessness and chaos where you live, so the fact you currently barter isn't particularly relevant to the point of my post.

Just because you are somewhat prepared does not mean you necessarily worry.

Exactly. Being organised and having some degree of resilience actually makes you less worried since you can easily get through periods of short term difficulty

My old neighbour has renevented their Anderson shelter, spent about 5k on it and I seen it the other day. They are practicing by staying in it 1 night per week increasing to 5 by end of the year.

Tell me they’re not

if its war Im afraid pets will have to go (2nd World War). what do we all think is going to happen? Won't be nukes but more likely hacking banks etc and disrupting supply lines. Iran? Russia? N.Korea? Who are we supposed to be frightened of?

Talking about shelters, where I live they are built into many houses (garages) and buildings being used normally until needed in emergencies. They must be ready within 48 hours, and are mainly funded by the government. Most people know where the nearest one is. There is usually one in every street. Pets not allowed though..

Things like honey will literally be fine decades after the BBE date.

Honey can be eaten thousands of years later… it’s truly wonderous stuff.

Zennia · 16/04/2026 21:17

I don't see anyone doing anything.
We couldn't even fire back at Hezbollah when they attacked our base in Cyprus so shrugs.

By asking for a start where our municipal nuclear shelters are?? The Finns can shelter their entire population.

It might actually be worth working - and fighting for a country like that. This one, owned by America, where all that matters is who you know and how much inheritance you’ll get? Not so much.

The Finns can't shelter the entire population. In the cities its fine as there's public shelters, and if you live in a block of flats the building should have a shelter and some work places will have them but those of us living in detached houses in small towns and rural areas have nothing. My nearest public shelter is 80km away and we'd be fighting for space with the locals. When Russia invaded Ukraine people ask our municipal council what are options are and they said staying home is the best option as if shit hits the fan it might not be wise to travel far in the hope of finding a space in a public shelter.
My workplace has one though, perhaps I'd take my family there as its only 20km away.

Caspianberg · 17/04/2026 06:34

I think people trying to grow their own produce again should be encouraged. I know not everyone can, but every item grown increases what you have available , reduces fuel needed to ship those items, and in actual time of war, some basics like herbs, berries and whatever would help make a boring rationed diet less boring.

Berries are one of easiest as can be grown in pots in small space, and just regrow every year. Most herbs also perrienal so plant one and they just come back every year so low cost and maintenance. If anyone has ever grow cucumber or courgettes you will know if plant successfully grows, you end up feeding the street with surplus.

These all help with war. But also just general inflation and high costs over time.

WaryCrow · 20/04/2026 08:10

@Natsku, guess how many UK cities have public shelters? Go on, have a wild stab in the dark. Based on what you know of how much the UK government values the British people, who aren’t even allowed to identify as British if their ancestors lived here for a few thousand years.

Yay to encouraging growing more. Requisition Trump’s golf course, and all the rest for smallholders and allotments. As above though, the government prefers a desperate populace with no other choice than to starve at their pleasure. Remember plebs can’t even own the homes with gardens that were built for us any more.
