Hurt my foot, can't get to minor injuries:( wtf do I do?

So earlier today I was chasing the toddler and I put my foot in a hole on the path and my foot turned over.

It was at the bottom of the garden so managed to gather her up and get home but I can barely walk on it, just keep it in one position and shuffle.

I have doctors surgery right across the road but she said I'd have to go to minor injuries without even seeing me.

The problem is, I live rurally with a dependent and breastfed baby and no car. Minor injuries is 20 miles away and public transport stops at 4pm.
I also can't walk enough to do it in my own so my husband would have to come which means bringing the other two, and there's a risk we won't be seen until too late to get the last bus/train home.

Taxi is completely unaffordable.

I'll have to painkiller and elevate it until it feels better right? And risk it being broken because what else do I do?
I can't call an ambulance for this that's ridiculous

Do you not have any family or friends that would come and drive you ?

Blueberryme · 14/04/2026 18:52

Can family or friends take the older DC and your DH go with you and the baby to minor injuries?

Dexterrr · 14/04/2026 18:53

Babysitter for the kids and husband takes you
Or he just takes you, and the kids
That's just how it is without extended family to assist with kids, presumably that's the case for you

How do you normally go anywhere after 4pm? Can a friend/family member lend you money for a taxi?

Arlanymor · 14/04/2026 18:54

If you don't have any friends or family - in terms of babysitting or a lift to/from minor injuries - who can help then call NHS 111 and explain the details of your situation, including that the GP has advised they will not see you. There are community services which you may be able to access and the possibility of patient transport. Do you have something like a flexibus available? For first aid care at home in the meantime you should do the RICE method.

tarheelbaby · 14/04/2026 18:54

It's not great but can you stay off it this evening/over night and take painkillers until morning when you can use public transport if you want to have it examined.

Do you have anyone nearby who can help you? even a neighbour?

There's no point in the GP seeing her as it needs x-raying, so they are totally right.

You'll just all have to go if your husband has the car. Otherwise he'll have to take you tomorrow anyway so might as well just go.

Pricelessadvice · 14/04/2026 18:55

Any pins and needles or altered feeling in the foot? Or obvious deformity? If not, I wouldn’t panic tonight. Ice, elevate and pain relief.
Can you get to a minor injuries tomorrow?

Shudacudawuda · 14/04/2026 18:55

If you really think it might be broken then yes, as inconvenient as it is you'll have to get your DH to drop you at minor injuries and pick you up when you're done. It'll be less inconvenient in the long run than discovering later that it's broken and not healing correctly.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/04/2026 18:55

You should go because an untreated broken bone could be really dangerous.

Is there not a friend or family member who could look after the kids?
How on earth do you manage living rurally with no car?
How old are your children?

SilenceInside · 14/04/2026 18:56

If there really is no one at all who could take the older children then you all go together to minor injuries or wherever is open now. Husband is in charge of child wrangling whilst you get seen.

Zahava · 14/04/2026 18:56

It sounds like it does need to be seen and x rayed, but I think you will need to at least get a taxi- I appreciate it will be expensive but you can’t get public transport if you are struggling to walk. Would there be anyone who could lend you the money for a taxi? Or a friend / neighbour who could give you a lift? Sorry you’re in such a predicament!

I didn't say I disagreed with what the GP said, but when you call 111 it's important to explain all of the details of any help you've sought, including contact with services and any first aid administered at home.

The family has no car, it says it in the OP, they would have to use public transport.

Pancakeflipper · 14/04/2026 18:57

If there really isn't any one who can babysit. Can your husband drive you there and drop you off. Then collect you when you are finished. Means dragging the children to and fro but it's a one off.

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/04/2026 18:58

You have probably badly sprained your ankle. You need to ice regularly, elevate it as much as possible and rest it as much as possible. If you can’t put any weight on it, you’ll need to go to hospital to get checked.

Drive her in what? They don't have a car!

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/04/2026 18:59

I’m shocked at your GP.

VikingLady · 14/04/2026 18:59

I thought all areas had patient transport for those who need it. If you call 111 for advice aNd tell them there’s absolutely no way for you to get there, then they book it for you. It’s basically a minibus.

Octavia64 · 14/04/2026 19:00

If you think it might be broken it’ll need an x ray to check.

up to you if you think it is or not,

gps don’t have access to x rays

newornotnew · 14/04/2026 19:00

How much is a taxi when you say unaffordable? Minor injuries is 20 miles away

Can any family lend you the taxi fare?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/04/2026 19:02

How on earth do you actually live? Are you seriously telling me that you can"t go anywhere after 4pm? Not even to a hospital? Surely this is not a reasonable way to live life?
You need to really rethink your life choices . This could be really dangerous!

NuffSaidSam · 14/04/2026 19:03

It blows my mind how people live like this! What would you do if it was your child who you thought had a broken ankle/foot? Tell them tough luck the bus stops at 4pm and we can't afford a taxi?! It's madness.

SimonQuinlanksWeakLemonDrink · 14/04/2026 19:19

I’m sorry you’ve hurt yourself. I hope you find a solution for tonight.

You also need to take this as a warning for the future, that you need a proper plan for emergencies, especially with a baby and children. Even if that’s putting a few pounds in cash away in a jar that nobody ever touches, so you can afford a taxi in an emergency that doesn’t warrant an ambulance - which is most things these days apart from immediate threat to life.

HelenaWilson · 14/04/2026 19:24

I’m shocked at your GP.

What do you expect the GP to do?

SilenceInside · 14/04/2026 19:38

Sorry for some reason I missed the bit about no car, and thought that you had no car but DH does. It will have to be a taxi, even though it’s expensive.
