Hurt my foot, can't get to minor injuries:( wtf do I do?

So earlier today I was chasing the toddler and I put my foot in a hole on the path and my foot turned over.

It was at the bottom of the garden so managed to gather her up and get home but I can barely walk on it, just keep it in one position and shuffle.

I have doctors surgery right across the road but she said I'd have to go to minor injuries without even seeing me.

The problem is, I live rurally with a dependent and breastfed baby and no car. Minor injuries is 20 miles away and public transport stops at 4pm.
I also can't walk enough to do it in my own so my husband would have to come which means bringing the other two, and there's a risk we won't be seen until too late to get the last bus/train home.

Taxi is completely unaffordable.

I'll have to painkiller and elevate it until it feels better right? And risk it being broken because what else do I do?
I can't call an ambulance for this that's ridiculous

Drive her in what? They don't have a car!

Thought her DH had a car.

Need emergency plan - what if need to take a child to.hospital after 4pm.

Where does it say that?

Where does it say that?

I have to admit I thought her husband had a car too when I first read it.

I know it's not much help now but living that rurally without transport and without someone who can help. Is there really nobody? No-one at all? I don't know two of my neighbours well (I know the third opposite) but I'd take either of them to the walk in centre in an emergency.

Have you called 111? They can advise you on what you should do.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/04/2026 20:02

One of your past threads talks about how supportive the people in your village are. I'm sure there must be someone who can help out. Just reach out and ask.

It blows my mind how people live like this! What would you do if it was your child who you thought had a broken ankle/foot? Tell them tough luck the bus stops at 4pm and we can't afford a taxi?! It's madness.

Exactly... Sorry kiddo it's too expensive to get your broken bone seen too ah well

user2848502016 · 14/04/2026 20:03

Unless you have pins and needles/cold foot/loss of sensation/foot is at a strange angle you should be ok to take painkillers, elevate, ice and rest it tonight.
But if you’re still struggling to put weight on it tomorrow you need to make a plan to get to minor injuries. If you can’t find someone to take you your DH will just have to come with you and bring the DC.
You really do need to be seen if you think it’s broken, it’s best to treat it sooner than later. The GP is right it’s a minor injuries thing and will likely need an X ray which the GP can’t do

FindingMeno · 14/04/2026 20:04

For me it would depend on whether there were worrying signs like pins and needles. I would obviously ice and elevate and get medical attention tomorrow regardless.
If there are concerns that it may need seeing urgently I would use public transport and go, and worry about the rest later.
I can understand how you are in this position. We don't all have money and choices about where and how we live!
I would definitely come up with an 'emergency' plan going forward.
Just remember that the majority of people would want to help you if they could so maybe you could move out of your comfort zone and ask someone you don't know so well for help, or even appeal to a community social media group.
Good luck and hope you get sorted.

TalulahJP · 14/04/2026 20:35

i’d phone 111 and tell them about your foot and if they want you in tell them that you have no way to get to minor injuries and childcare issues tonight, so could you come tomorrow after ?? time (whatever time the bus could get you there).

meanwhile get dh to borrow a walking stick or crutches from someone local who has spares or whatever. if he cant, i’d borrow from gp across the road tomorrow. put a bag of frozen peas on it tonight.

then think about one of you learning to drive and pethaps joining a car club nearby if there is one. living in the sticks wirh no transport isn’t ideal.

RawBloomers · 14/04/2026 20:36

I take it DH doesn't have a car either?

Living rurally you need a car or good relationships with your rural neighbours (ideally both), really. But if you don't have good enough relations with neighbours to ask one of them to run you in, in your situation I would probably dose up on pain killers until morning, fashion some sort of walking stick/crutch out of whatever was around and go to A & E tomorrow on the first bus.

SanctiMoaniArse · 14/04/2026 20:51

So what's the plan if one of the DC needs emergency medical treatment past 4pm?

Whatever that plan is, you're as important as the DC, so put that plan in place for yourself now!!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 14/04/2026 20:58

OP if you’ve not gone yet - all in the car. Dh drives you and you get out of car and go into minor injuries. He drives home. You get seen and then call him when you are done. If DCs are asleep, he asks a neighbour to sit in with the older ones while he drives to collect you.

ChocHotolate · 14/04/2026 20:58

Go tomorrow

They haven't got a car!!!!!!
There is no car!
If there was a car, there wouldn't be a problem!

TestTickle · 14/04/2026 21:02

Get a taxi or ask a neighbour or family. Or immobilise and elevate for now and go in the morning

If you are going to live rurally with no car then as a minimum you need to keep some emergency cash for taxis when needed.

SilenceInside · 14/04/2026 21:03

I’m wondering how DH gets home if he has no car and there’s no public transport after 4pm. Maybe he gets dropped off by a colleague?

Gets home from where? There is no information in the op to suggest that her dh works outside their immediate area is there?

Dalmationday · 14/04/2026 21:07

I am really shocked that you live like this. Miles from anywhere but can’t drive and no money for taxis. This is unsustainable surely. What happens if your child was ill????

I would be getting friends or family or neighbours to come round and watch the kids and husband drives you to hospital.

i can’t believe how trapped you are in this situation

We don't know he works do we?

SilenceInside · 14/04/2026 21:07

No fair enough, that was a stupid assumption to make.

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/04/2026 18:59

I’m shocked at your GP.

The GP can't diagnose this. It needs an X-ray. It's policy. The GP surgery is not a mini hospital because people can't get to A&E or MIU.

How is her husband going to drive her to hospital? THEY DONT HAVE A CAR!!!!!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mischance · 14/04/2026 21:12

Feet are complex. Lots of little bones.

Are you thinking it is your foot rather than a twisted ankle? Whereabouts in your foot is your pain? Do you have swelling/blueness?

I broke 2 bones in my foot. One was missed and I now limp badly. I then broke another in the same foot.

Don't mess with potential broken foot. Rung 111, explain your problem.

HowcanIhelp123 · 14/04/2026 21:12

If your DH or DC had similar injury would you be suggesting ignoring the fact it could be broken and stay home to ice and elevate, or would you work something out to get them there?

Stop martyring yourself, look after yourself the same way you look after others and go. Not ideal but its a one off not a regular thing! You'll have to ask a friend or neighbour for help at least one way but I'd help if I was there and a friend asked similar!

MaggieFS · 14/04/2026 21:13

Obviously too late for today, but can you ask locally or at the GP’s for crutches to borrow so that you can get the bus on your own? Or ideally get a lift. Perhaps ask the hospital about patient transport or if there are any volunteer drivers.
