Homemade savoury snack ideas for WFH tea breaks!

MoreRabbit · 14/04/2026 09:21

I do a lot of cooking and baking but I've hit a bit of a brick wall with this, probably because I'm so hard-wired to chocolate consumption after Easter 😁

I WFH and need some SNACKS to keep my energy up and help me stay sane. What can I make that will be help fill me up and won't go off quickly? I know I could just eat fruit but that's not what I'm after here!

Ideally I want savoury - maybe I make some seeded cheese crackers or similar? I make quite a bit of bread but I want something a bit more interesting. Maybe seeded pretzels? Does anyone have any good homemade snack recs for me pls? Bonus points if the kids can have them in packed lunches too!

Cheese scones? Savoury flapjacks?

AnOldLeodensian · 14/04/2026 09:35

I make savoury egg muffins - just cook whatever veg/meat you like, put in a muffin tin. Mix up your eggs (whites and yolks), pour over the veg, top it with cheese. Bake until they’re solid. Once you’ve cooled them, you can freeze them and then defrost one at a time in the microwave.

Also cheese twists with frozen puff pastry (sometimes plain cheese, sometimes add ham, caramelised onions etc). Last in the fridge for a few days.

Thanks all! @elizabethdraper I like the look of the granola bars - have you ever done them with agave nectar instead of honey? I have some to use up.

@SheilaFentiman I love me a cheese scone but they go stale so quickly 😳 I've made mini ones before and frozen them, but we don't have a microwave so takes a bit of forward-thinking. Hmm maybe I should revisit - I've just remembered a recipe I have somewhere for pear and blue cheese scones.

@AnOldLeodensian I'm a bit wary of those egg bites as they seem to be a favourite of Instagrammers obsessed with protein but maybe I need to curb my judgyness! I do love a quiche and essentially they're a crustless quiche I suppose. I've done pastry twists before and I like them but am aware they're essentially just hydrogenated fats, however tasty...I make my own good short crust/quiche pastry but I haven't got the energy for puff.

I fancy a sort of savoury cracker of some kind with dukkah (which I love) - maybe I need to make some spiced seeded olive oil crackers and see how much they tempt me.

Sausage rolls is another one I'm very keen on (and the kids like them too) but they disappear so quickly! I add grated veg and apple so at least there's some vits in there.

@MoreRabbit re sausage rolls, I put a tablespoon of mango chutney into the sausage meat before cooking. Maybe not as healthy as apple/veg - but yummy all the same!

Chocolatecoffeecup · 14/04/2026 12:24

It's a bit basic but I like carrot batons with humous and crackers and cheese.

KnickerlessParsons · 14/04/2026 12:25

I make malt loaf - it's nice and low/no fat and gets nicer the longer you keep it.

Londonmummy66 · 14/04/2026 12:26

I try to have hard boiled eggs in the fridge as they are very filling.
Ryvitas with butter and marmite or cream cheese and smoked salmon or smoked mackerel pate. The latter also with veg sticks.

SheilaFentiman · 14/04/2026 12:35

What about a slice of tortilla warmed through? (same idea as egg muffin but might feel nicer as a wedge)

Selttan · 14/04/2026 12:55

Flatbread crackers with bagel seasoning & hummus
I often have
Apricot & Coconut Bliss Balls
Pinwheels - ham & cheese or pesto & cheese
Spicy Parmesan Popcorn

AnOldLeodensian · 14/04/2026 12:56

The egg muffins are popular with the “protein maxxing” influencer crowd you’re right. If it helps, I started making them in 2013 after advice from a diabetes nurse about savoury breakfasts, they’re not some kind of passing social media trend!

InTheVanguard · 14/04/2026 13:02

There’s an Instagram account called Doctor Bowl who does healthy savoury and sweet snacks that are always nice.

Talipesmum · 14/04/2026 13:06

I know you said homemade, but I want to recommend these emmental and pumpkin seed crisp breads - they’re substantial and v delicious

If you like them you could hunt down / create a recipe

Home made tsatsiki and warm wholemeal pitta bread (5 mins max)
Leek and Potato soup with a dash of tabasco
Veggie soup
Pepper halves stuffed with sausage meat or with cheese & herb breadcrumbs.
Puff pastry, spread with grated cheese & marmite and folded over.
Pate & toast

ArtAngel · 14/04/2026 13:19

Farinata
Samosas
Pakora
Spanokopita

Seainasive · 14/04/2026 13:20

Savoury flapjacks are nice!

dotdotdotdash · 14/04/2026 13:28

Good thread! Thanks for the ideas...

I listened to a recent Zoe podcast about healthy snacking and they recommended: popcorn; apples; 70% chocolate; avocado; chickpeas; yogurt; and nuts.

My personal faves at the moment are: peanut butter and apple slices, celery with marmite peanut butter or rye bread toast and cheese.

I really think if I sort out my snacking that my diet is generally okay. Junk food snacks are my downfall!

MoreRabbit · 14/04/2026 15:29

Oooh some great ideas here, thank you!

I like the sound of apricot and coconut bliss balls but see how easily I've been distracted by sweet things 😳

The seed mix sounds lovely.

Do you eat nuts?

Sprinkle some cashews with paprika or chilli or whatever and roast for about 10 minutes. Lovely and will make your house smell amazing. They'll keep for a day or two.

cordeliavorkosigan · 14/04/2026 17:15

I make chia seed crackers with garlic or other seasonings and have them with cheese or hummus depending on the seasoning. Or peanut butter.

Triscuit (or other wheat) crackers with cheddar, black pepper and pecan, one pecan half on each (or 1/4, even) - delicious..

AtleastitsnotMonday · 14/04/2026 17:41

I make these Crackers you can switch up the flavourings to suit, I like cumin and nigella seeds.
Roasted chickpeas also make a good snack, just rinse, dry and coat in your chosen spices and a bit of oil and bake until crunchy.
I really like pita chips, I cheat and use shop bought pita, just chop season sprat with oil and bake until crisp.

Wholemeal pitta bread and houmous
home made popcorn. So easy.
crumpets and cheese.
do you have an air fryer? You can roast nuts in there, takes a few minutes and tastes great.
have you tried lotus seeds - bit like popcorn.

OneGreenSheep · 14/04/2026 21:43

Roast chickpeas/beans are good but I find they don’t keep that long annoyingly!

Two ingredient flatbreads would be good with hummus and veg? It’s just yoghurt and flour so very quick and easy to make. You can add herbs or cheese or whatever too.

For shop bought - I really like the Kallo rice cakes/corn cakes, Love Corn and Graze packets. Holland & Barrett also have a good selection of their own brand snacks!

canuckup · 14/04/2026 21:56

Apparently onion bhajis in the air fryer are easy to do
