Judge my tub of butter...

I have a theory that you can tell a lot about a person's disposition by the state of their butter/marg.

Anyone else dare to bare all?

What to you think I'm like based on my tub? It's "I can't believe it's not butter" (photo probably awaiting approval

As with a lot of things, living in a household of 5 including teens the butter is not the pristine state it would be if I lived alone! 😂

However we are at least all in agreement it has to be proper butter and in a proper butter dish - we have had posher ones in the past but are very fond of this which may be familiar to those of you that self cater holiday in France 🇫🇷 as it’s often the one you find in your accommodation and is cheap as chips in the supermarket to buy. We love our little 🐄.

We get through the stuff at a rapid rate so at least when it’s hacked to death / infested by crumbs it’s quickly replaced with a new one! (And a clean dish of course…)

I know there’s a lot of Lurpak love on Mumsnet but has to be Isigny Sainte-Mere for us! Twice the price of Lurpak I appreciate but absolutely worth it imho.

You are a butter amateur. Get some Lurpak and learn to use the butter knife properly!

Edited to add, that stuff looks like the putty used to put glass in windows in ye olden times.

Edited

Preferably not Lurpak! - get some UK butter! I never understand why people prefer to support Danish farmers, rather than our own.

Ok, I need educating here, what is the deal with butter dishes? Can the butter just sit out on the side indefinitely without going bad??

I grew up in a house that exclusively used clover (DM insisted this was a ‘better’ kind of marg because it actually does have a buttermilk in it) and I still have this for spreading on the kids sandwiches/baking but then I keep block of good butter for cooking and for my own toast because it’s heavenly.

It lives in the fridge in its foil though, and therefore cuts like cheese. What am I missing??

I raise the bar. Spanish butter in a tin.
First time I have bought it.
Won't be the last

Ours sits on the kitchen counter out of the fridge in its dish so that it’s spreadable all the time. Keeps fine. We do get through a block every few days though.

I'm equally in need of educating.

I just have Lurpak in the fridge, and get block butter for cooking. Side space is heavily at a premium though, and gets a fair amount of direct sun during the day.

Photos won't load. I'll try once more

Real butter all the way here! I’m not supposed to have dairy so I have the tiniest amount, whereas my tweenager will literally eat it with a spoon if I don’t stop her 🤢 for this reason we have two butter dishes, but hers is in the dishwasher at the mo. She is not allowed near mine!

Allmarbleslost · 13/04/2026 15:44

Mine is usually full of toast crumbs. Fucking teenagers.

Mumofyellows · 13/04/2026 15:51

I’m judging it’s not proper butter in a butter dish 😁

Crikeyalmightey · 13/04/2026 16:13

I keep mine on the work top in its foil on a plate or chopping board and it still hard enough to slice like cheese.

Yesterday’s toasted bagel crumbs… but I’m the only one who eats it in my house so they’re my crumbs 🙈

I love love this butter dish!!

I read you have a milk allergy OP so not judging about the fake butter, I am judging you for the hack job of your FB! My husband does this, drives me mental.

user2255679541 · 13/04/2026 16:30

@Mydogisagentleman Ooh, I might have to look for that. We've had some lovely Italian butter, but I don't think I've ever tried Spanish and I've never thought about the butter when I was there.

@OnlyOneAdda Virgin bar for you, although I prefer Echire, which seems hard to get here these days.

I'm afraid we're hackers 😊. But not crumbers!

Question!
Those who only buy real butter:

How many blocks (pats !) do you get through per week? Along with how many in your house hold please?

See - i adore butter. But we get through shed loads of it in our house and i think i'd need about 8 blocks of it per week. Seriously! £££££

catipuss · 13/04/2026 16:39

Hagnumber4 · 13/04/2026 09:58

No one else up for sharing a candid snap?

Too much hassle to get photos, but my olive spread is pretty neatly scraped from the top, and my butter is cut squarely from the end and the pack rewrapped afterwards.

catipuss · 13/04/2026 16:41

Also used to make my own butter from cream (bragging here) and it was very good.

5 in the household, all adults or older teens. 2-4 blocks per week for regular eating - more if eg baking, or roasting birds (a whole block went under the skin of our Easter Turkey 😁).

I live alone so unless I have visitors about half a block of Kerrygold lasts me a week. I keep the portion in a butter dish on the worktop.

Yesterday I did use a full block to make 2 apple crumbles to feed visiting children and grandchildren.

I think that people who use marg are kidding themselves its healthy whilst chomping down chocolate etc on the side

I think you’re going too deep. Most people use marg because it’s cheaper than butter and that’s it.

There 4 at home. We usually go through 2 blocks a week depending on what people eat for breakfast. When the older DC were home it was more like 4. DC2 eats loads of toast!

SwirlyGates · 13/04/2026 17:16

Weeelokthen · 13/04/2026 09:55

You don't have last weeks toast crumbs in it, so I would say it looks pretty good 😂

Your butter lasts you a week?😮
