Hague was involved in the JCPOA negotiations between Iran and the US (as our representative on the P5+1).

A far better politician than Farage is.

To be fair, that's not difficult.

Just caught the news and they are still wittering on about vetting processes.
They interviewed Farage (still no questions about Tices tax), and some other party leaders.

Do these leaders think that Starmer sits around micromanaging staff several levels below him, because that's how it sounds?
They appear to have no clue about how leadership and delegation work.

This is worrying for Britain.

Oh they know. They are just using it to try to destabilise Labour in their party’s interest - totally forgetting they are supposed to put the country first. As usual.

Very incisive from Alex Wickham, UK political editor for Bloomberg

“Sources say Olly Robbins felt bound by the rules of the security vetting process NOT to tell the PM, No10 or the foreign secretary about the concerns raised about Mandelson”

What a mess. And what is the point of vetting if you don't tell the PM?

You tell the PM whether someone passes or fails. The screen shots in that link show concerns were raised but then dismissed by the FO and he was passed. Then No10 were told he passed and nothing else. He didn’t even fail the vetting (though probably should have). It’s a big fuss about nothing.

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2026 15:53

So - Sub committee conducts investigation & considers the issues.
Decides yes/no.
Information relating to investigation kept secret so as not to prejudice those giving evidence.

PM/FCO/Cabinet told only the outcome of those discussions.

I think that needs an overhaul.

I don't have a lot of time for Olly Robbins (see Brexit) but he must be pissed off given he followed process.

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2026 15:54

I imagine the explanation will get a lot less focus than the calls to resign.

TemperanceWest · 17/04/2026 16:00

I don't think Starmer will resign. There will be much fury. What a mess of a system, though.

Karistyleaftea · 17/04/2026 16:03

I fail to see how it is the PM's fault - he has to rely on people to organise lots of processes , policy decisions etc , micro managing is really not the best use of Sir Keir's time.

That style of leadership did not go so well for Rishi Sunak did it?
Kemi Badenoch is not doing herself any favours imo as most of the population of the UK is very much on the side of fair play.

Why did the BBC not report the recent excellent news that the UK has regained its position as the world's 5th biggest economy several years earlier than projected?
Their constant negativity is bafffling - don't they want the country to do well.

I can see why the system is as it is. I can also see the inherent weaknesses in it. I agree Robbins, while not my cup of tea, is aggrieved about having to resign over it.

cardibach · 17/04/2026 16:05

@Karistyleaftea they don’t want the country to do well unless the very richest are having everything their own way too I reckon.

Notonthestairs · 17/04/2026 16:13

BBC are tip toeing around as per (Charter renewal/right wing campaigns/Trump).

The remainder of the media, bar the Guardian, are owned and run by non doms billionaires & hedge funds.

There is a good reason why the likes of Paul Marshall and Legatum pour funds in to loss losers like GB News, the Spectator etc - to influence public thinking.

They'll make their money back if right wing politicians get in and start de-regulating be that fracking, crapto, property or banking.

Karistyleaftea · 17/04/2026 16:15

@cardibach I agree.
I was thinking of adding that to my post actually and that fact is partly why I think people are opening their eyes more and more to see the injustice between the lives of the "Haves "
and the "Have nots".

I see that this is the normal process for UK ambassadorial appointments.

Ministerial appointments differ.

SerendipityJane · 17/04/2026 16:33

People who remember "Yes Minister" where he became Prime Minister will of course already be well aware of the delicacy and discretion needed around security vetting.

I will suggest that had it emerged from this debacle that Starmer was aware of the vetting outcomes, you would then have a contrary news frothing over the fact that Starmer was able to use security information to advance his political career.

Which is precisely why the security outcomes are walled off from politicians.

The only key takeway from this story is how well a lot of people are justifying the medias contempt for their intelligence. If you act stupid, you will be treated as stupid.

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2026 18:08

Cat people! (ie everyone). My poor wee cat is hopping with fleas. She was due new treatment so I got Bravecto from the vet. Administered this 3 days ago and have Indorexed the main flea areas. She is still licking licking licking and scratching. I am very prone to the wee bastards who always home in on my succulent flesh so I am covered in bites (DH has none, grr). I literally just went and stood on DS's carpet and have 3 bites. (she sleeps on his bed).

What do I do next? More Bravecto? It's expensive for something that isn't working...

I have got rid of fleas once before with Indorex.

cardibach · 17/04/2026 18:28

Indorex but on speed, @Piggywaspushed
I got a massive infestation when I tried to adopt a new cat. Poor Perdy was hopping. Took her t9 the vet where she got a tablet that basically took down all the fleas currently on her. Then I Indorexed everywhere and thoroughly hoovered every square inch daily for 7 days. Then Indorexed again and repeated the 7 days of hoovering. It was a nightmare, but it worked. Oh, and new spot on a few days after her vet treatment. They gave me a vet strength spot on which I had to order on prescription.
I am also both a flea magnet and horribly allergic…

pointythings · 17/04/2026 18:28

Does she let you comb her? It could be that her licking and scratching is because the bites are still itchy - she may not have any live fleas, just the consequences of the bites. The only way to find out is to comb her to see if there's anything alive on there.

You may have to Indorex more widely. The one time mine had fleas (They're indoor and have a catio and are treated, so it hasn't happened since) I put them in the bathroom and just did the whole house. They didn't like it, but it worked.

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2026 18:34

Thanks both. I bought a comb so will try that. I hate hoovering because it hurts my wrists ( and I'm a slattern) but I'll bite the bullet.

I hate it too. I was a sweaty mess every day I had to do it. But it did work.

Llttledrummergirls · 17/04/2026 18:39

We were given a sofa once that came with fleas. It will take a while to break the cycle, but indorex used liberally will work. We hoovered everywhere we could reach- both sides of mattresses, washed every piece of fabric and anything else was liberally sprayed with indorex.

We repeated every few days until we were clear.

Unfortunately it can take a while to break the cycle.

placemats · 17/04/2026 19:26

My sympathies @Piggywaspushed

Indorex and vacuum. Everyday. This will pass.

Piggywaspushed · 17/04/2026 19:44

Sigh. Thank you.
