My idiot husband has severed his patella tendon playing hockey.

I'm just here to moan. Poor DH etc but honestly.

Clearly 46 year olds who've only played mixed hockey for the last year should not suddenly play 11 a side at a hockey tournament.

We've had to rearrange a load of stuff and I doubt he'll be able to fly to Sardinia for May half term. Grr.

Go without him, selfish hockey-playing numpty.

Posner · 12/04/2026 13:47

Lovely, just lovely.

warms my heart reading about relationships like this

VenusClapTrap · 12/04/2026 13:47

Mine did this. Well, not quite so bad, but he did do his knee in. It was enough to finally convince him that his hockey years were behind him, and it was time to find a means to keep fit more appropriate for his age. My commiserations, I feel your pain being left to do everything while they recover. I hope you can still get to Sardinia, even if it’s with a friend instead.

MinnieMountain · 12/04/2026 13:49

Oh bore off @posner.I'm clearly venting to strangers rather than to DH.

Mine is 55 and still obsessed with hockey. Has started playing again despite having had a hip replacement in November. Hockey is the bane of my life!

It’s very serious and incredibly painful

MinnieMountain · 12/04/2026 14:02

I'm aware @Posner. He did exactly the same to the other knee 8 years ago.

MinnieMountain · 12/04/2026 14:09

And thank you to those with hockey playing husbands for the sympathy. It is exactly that I'll have to everything.

At least DS is 12 this time. Sardinia will be a rather different holiday just the 2 of us though.

Thank goodness not the same knee!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 12/04/2026 14:18

Sounds like he over estimated his fitness and abilities.

Hope he can get his pain under control and be as independent as possible while it heals, though it’s bound to mate life harder for you fit a while @MinnieMountain .

start thinking who else could join you on holiday - no point his space going to waste.

TheChosenTwo · 12/04/2026 14:20

Oh dear!
Has he been told not to travel for the May half term? Appreciate I don’t know the treatment for a torn patella tendon but theoretically would be be allowed to travel? By booking assistance or something at the airport which might be helpful with luggage and getting him to the plane (my mum books this as she’s mobility impaired and my stepdad can’t manage everything on his own) it means they can travel a bit easier.

My own dh had just got back into the swing of the gym and 2 weeks later fell at work and tore his hamstring 🫣 a month later and he’s still rather hobbly! And he had been talking about rejoining his football 5 a side kick abouts too! I was actually pleased for him and now he’s back to square 1…

MinnieMountain · 12/04/2026 14:27

When he did the other knee, it was operation within 14 days of injury, then crutches for 6 weeks. He's still in A&E but he's 99% sure of what he's done.

Yes so just imagine if it was the same knee! The operation would have been a whole lot more complex

user2848502016 · 12/04/2026 14:34

My DH ruptured his achilles tendon playing football a few years ago. Did feel sorry for him obviously especially as that meant him “retiring”
from football for good. But also meant me doing all the driving on a holiday we had booked, and all the running around after our youngest who was still a toddler at the time

I’m pretty sure he didn’t intentionally do this.

I’m sure he’d rather not be in agonising pain and miss out on his holiday.

Do you always try and make everything about yourself?

NotMajorTom · 12/04/2026 15:01

Only on mumsnet can someone sustaining a horrible injury be a reason to call them an idiot and selfish.

surely there must be women who suffer injuries and post on here who get sympathy, and any partners calling them idiots would get short shrift

LuckyNumberFive · 12/04/2026 15:06

I don't understand the disdain. Nobody chooses to sustain an injury like this for the fun of it. It's not as if he was careless and decided to go skiing while drunk or extreme mountain biking as a beginner, sounds like he's a regular bloke who just had an unfortunate accident playing a fairly pedestrian sport that he's familiar with.

I'd be gutted if I hurt myself playing netball or at gym and my partner was venting online and attributing blame for something that was clearly unintentional.

There seems to be a sense of humour failure on the part of some your respondents OP. Some Mumsnetters are extremely literal.

igelkott2026 · 12/04/2026 15:17

May half term is weeks away, don't anticipate problems that may not exist. I am sure he'll be able to walk (a bit) and fly, even if he can't drive or cycle.

There is absolutely not a whiff of “humour” in the OP

So you think OP is joking about having to do everything around the house or having to go on holiday without him?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/04/2026 15:23

Sounds a bit unwise yes. But he’s injured now.

What are men (and women!) in their 40s meant to do, accept they are past it and sit at home watching Netflix in their slippers?
it’s better to have a fit and active partner IMO even if it sometimes means unfortunate things happen and you have to support at home until they get better.

Tacohill · 12/04/2026 15:20

No. She has been accused of being unsympathetic to his plight and pain, but I don’t think she was, just annoyed that she now had to take up the load you mention.

CheeryOchreCat · 12/04/2026 15:28

I feel you @MinnieMountain. My DH fractured a bone in his hand while on
holiday, doing something very stupid involving a water slide. And yes, I was annoyed at him! While also sympathetic about the pain. We had a 1 year old at the time and everything fell to me for a good while, as even when the cast came off he wasn’t back doing everything immediately. I’m sorry this has fallen to you, and I’m sorry for your DH too. It is possible to feel those things simultaneously despite what PP think. Better to vent here & get it off your chest!
