Dd randomly vomiting- what could this be? Worried

My DD aged 6 has been randomly vomiting this week for no obvious reason. First time was on Sunday when she was just getting changed for bed and suddenly vomited on the floor. She was then absolutely fine until Wednesday, when she vomited twice and had a high temperature for literally one afternoon, then was again completely fine until this evening, when she was asleep and suddenly woke up and was sick all over her bed. I am really puzzled by what this could be. It doesn’t seem to be a vomiting bug because she has only been occasionally sick. She does have allergies to fish, nuts and legumes but I am completely sure that she hasn’t eaten any of those things, and indeed she hasn’t eaten anything out of the ordinary this week. Does anyone have any advice or thoughts please? Thank you!

And she is how fast asleep in my bed as though nothing has happened…

Has she been in contact with anyone who has chicken pox?

BarbaraVineFan · 11/04/2026 22:22

Not as far as I know, why?

Suddenly throwing up was the first symptom my dd had of it. Spots appeared a couple of days later.

Oh dear…

She could have had some sort of cross contamination with a similar class of her allergies which has set off an intolerance. Is she itchy? If you gently run your nail over her inner forearm does it leave a line? (Dermographism)

begonefoulclutter · 11/04/2026 22:25

Maybe she's fighting something off, and this is her body's way of getting rid of what it doesn't want.

She is a bit itchy but it’s only on her eczema which she has in her elbow creases. However, she did randomly have a tiny patch of hives on her face this morning and I gave her antihistamine. I will try the fingernail thing in the morning when she’s awake, thanks!

The only thing that is puzzling me though is, if it’s an allergic reaction, why is it happening intermittently like this?

Any other complaints, headaches or vision issues?

Teenthree · 11/04/2026 22:31

Do it so gently it doesn’t wake her up - it will still show if she has it.

No, nothing at all. She has been bouncing around as usual, eating and drinking normally, full of energy and joy as usual.

Might be a weird gastric bug thing. That was doing the rounds here last week just in time for Easter

Just checked- no line.

If she still has active eczema you haven’t got down to the root of other allergies too as the eczema is the symptom. Has she had genetic blood test for coeliac disease for example? Also dairy/soy/egg/corn etc all usually go along with shellfish etc allergies

I’m voting gastric bug thing. The leaping about stuff is a good thing I believe. One of mine is ridiculously vomitous and can throw up with no warning or other symptoms. How fortunate eh? Hope she’s on the mend soon. X

as a baby she was allergic to many more things (dairy, egg, soy) but has seemingly grown out of those allergies. The eczema was bad when she was a baby but has only returned in the last year or so, which could suggest that possibly she has developed another allergy? She last had allergy testing aged 2 so will prob need to get her tested again.

Thank you. I love the word ‘vomitous’! DD usually isn’t vomitous at all, which is why this is weird!

My kids had a vomiting bug like this a few months ago. Random vomits every day or two days, lasted about 8/9 days in total. It wasn’t a classic case of intense vomiting for 24 hours as it usually is.

I was going to say coeliac disease especially with other previous intolerance issues. And skin stuff. Dd was randomly sick while not being unwell and sadly for her it was 8 years before she was tested for coeliac disease after being fobbed off by various doctors. Was actually someone on here who said ask for her to be tested. Obviously for your Dd it’s only been a week so maybe wait a little while longer in case it’s a weird bug but if it carries on think about coeliac test.

That’s weird! What did you do about school etc? She is meant to go back on Monday and I’m not sure how to handle

Oh dear. Thank you. I will wait a while and then ask if it continues. That isn’t good news :(

There has been a weird sickness bug doing the rounds at our school that involved intermittent vomiting.

Kirbert2 · 11/04/2026 22:45

Is she still having temps or has that stopped?

No, that was literally just from about 3pm- 10pm on Wednesday!

DD went to school after the first 24 hours because enough time elapsed we thought she wouldn’t be sick again. She complained of feeling sick at school but only actually vomited at home.
