Frogs eating rats?!

I’ve noticed this year the frogs aren’t returning to my pond. They come every year.

Have seen a rat in garden. And cat caught 2 I think recently. I read rats will catch frogs. Would they do that? And if so what can I do? Tidied up garden, stopping using fat balls, no seed for birds. Neighbors at back along from us has chickens so probably rats.

I miss the frogs 🐸.

Would make Wind in the Willows a bit more interesting I suppose

Could you put some rat poison or traps down? My dads got quite a problem but he lives in the countryside

My mind went to frogs nibbling the rats, didn't think it through any further tho.

We live rurally with a big garden and had rats. I think they were attracted by the food I gave to the birds. Natural predators helped. So try to encourage badgers, birds of prey, foxes etc. Poison not good - causes problems further up the food chain and is cruel.

Rats are brilliant swimmers and omnivores so they will kill and eat mice, frogs, birds.

Somersetbaker · 11/04/2026 20:58

The cat may be involved with the frog hunting, one I see quite often who is usually keen on a bit of attention, ignored me one day as it concentrated on a patch of long grass before catching a frog.

BigGapMum · 11/04/2026 21:02

Local cats caught all the frogs that were in my pond. It might be that your cat was the culprit.

PottingBench · 11/04/2026 21:02

My cat used to catch frogs and toads too. You could come down in the morning to a poor frog dried out on the carpet.

mondaytosunday · 11/04/2026 21:35

Ok so of course there are frogs that eat rats… but yes common rats are opportunistic and will eat frogs.

She’s not keen on frogs no. Plus there’s a net over the pond.

I don’t use a cat flap with her partly cos she’ll bring things in. So back door or not for her.

In SE London, the only wildlife we get is foxes and stuff. Sometimes owls. No way birds of prey or badgers, would love those though.

I'm in SE18, OP, and I've seen sparrowhawks catch and kill pigeons a couple of times here! So they might also pick off frogs and froglets.

No sparrowhawks seen here honest! Might ask on local WhatsApp Facebook group if they’ve seen any birds of prey and pray that they come here!

Maybe cat didn't eat the frogs but ate all the frogspawn? Sorry I don't know much about it but clicked on to hear about the massive mutant frogs.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/04/2026 09:37

I now want a pet bird of prey like in Hamnet! If she can have one I can. Would the cat get on with it though? 🙄😼
